Who are Naomi Osaka’s parents?
Osaka’s parents are Leonard Francois and Tamaki Osaka. The US Open has rendered Leonard’s name as Leonard Max Francois; the National Women’s History Museum identifies him as Haitian and Tamaki as Japanese. How Leonard Francois and Tamaki Osaka met
The National Women’s History Museum says Leonard met Tamaki in Sapporo in 1990, when he was a college student visiting Japan. TIME also places their meeting in Sapporo while Leonard was studying there.
The museum and TIME report that Tamaki’s father objected to the relationship. According to the museum’s account, the couple moved to Osaka, where they had their daughters, Mari and Naomi. Those details come from published biographical accounts; they should not be taken as a complete account of the family’s private experience.

Why the sisters used their mother’s surname
Mari and Naomi used Tamaki’s surname while the family was living in Japan. The National Women’s History Museum, TIME and Vogue describe the choice as practical. That explanation concerns the family’s circumstances and should not be generalized into a claim about Japanese naming law.
The family’s move to the United States
The National Women’s History Museum says the family moved to Long Island in 2000 to live with Leonard’s parents. The US Open profile gives a related age marker, saying Naomi moved to Long Island when she was three. These accounts describe the move with different levels of precision: one gives a year, and the other gives Naomi’s age.

TIME reports that the family later relocated to Florida as tennis became central to the girls’ lives. The accounts establish a move from Japan to the United States and a subsequent move to Florida, but do not provide a single, fully detailed timeline for every stage.
Leonard’s role in the sisters’ early tennis training
TIME reports that Leonard was inspired to coach his daughters after watching Venus and Serena Williams play at the French Open. The National Women’s History Museum says he began a training regimen for the girls after the family moved to Long Island. TIME also describes their training as extensive.
TIME attributes this explanation of Leonard’s motivation to him: “I always thought I could have been a great athlete if I had that support.” The quote offers context for his commitment to supporting his daughters’ tennis development; it does not establish that any one parent, coach or training approach alone explains Naomi’s later success.

Nippon.com has published a profile and interview centered on Tamaki, titled “Ōsaka Tamaki: Mom of Tennis Star Ōsaka Naomi on Life and Her Daughter’s Determination.” The family chronology and coaching details commonly highlighted in profiles of Naomi do not, on their own, capture Tamaki’s perspective. The available account is best understood as a mother-focused profile rather than a basis for adding unsourced details about her private life.
