Spoilers for all of Season 1: Tyler Galpin is the Hyde, but Marilyn Thornhill is the real mastermind. Thornhill is secretly Laurel Gates, and she uses Tyler and Wednesday’s blood to resurrect Joseph Crackstone and attack Nevermore’s outcasts. Enid, Bianca, Eugene, Thing and Wednesday stop the plan, yet Tyler’s fate and the identity of Wednesday’s stalker remain open as you begin Season 2.
Where Season 1 begins
Fifteen-year-old Wednesday Addams is expelled from her former school after releasing piranhas into a swimming pool and is sent to Nevermore Academy, a boarding school for supernatural outcasts. Her new roommate is Enid Sinclair, a werewolf. Other important students include siren Bianca Barclay, gorgon Ajax Petropolis, psychic painter Xavier Thorpe and bee-keeping outcast Eugene Ottinger. Thing, Wednesday’s disembodied hand companion, becomes her partner in investigation.
Wednesday starts having psychic visions while a series of brutal attacks strikes the area around Jericho. She investigates Rowan’s death and the other killings, moving her suspicions among Xavier, Tyler Galpin and people connected to Nevermore and the town. Tyler is a local “normie” who works at the Weathervane café and initially appears to be one of Wednesday’s few contacts outside school.
Who is the Hyde?
Tyler Galpin is the monster
The killer is a Hyde, a transformed creature whose violent behavior is triggered and directed by another person. Wednesday identifies Tyler after kissing him: the contact produces a psychic vision of Tyler attacking his therapist, Dr. Valerie Kinbott. Tyler later admits that he is the Hyde. He is dangerous, but he is not the architect of the season’s conspiracy.

Marilyn Thornhill is really Laurel Gates
Marilyn Thornhill, Nevermore’s friendly botany teacher and Wednesday’s dorm mother, is exposed as Laurel Gates. Laurel is descended from Joseph Crackstone, the 17th-century founder of Jericho and a fanatical enemy of outcasts. She survived under a new identity, recruited Tyler as her Hyde and steered the murders toward a much larger objective.
Laurel’s plan and Crackstone’s return
Laurel believes Jericho must be purged of its outcast population. She collects body parts from the killings and uses Wednesday’s blood in a ritual intended to bring Crackstone back. The plan turns the town’s colonial anti-outcast history into an immediate supernatural threat to Nevermore.

How the Season 1 finale is resolved
- Enid finally completes her first werewolf transformation and fights Tyler’s Hyde form, proving that Wednesday’s roommate is also her strongest physical ally.
- Bianca uses her siren ability against Crackstone, while Eugene’s bees help turn the confrontation against Laurel.
- Goody’s guidance gives Wednesday the chance to recover, and Wednesday defeats Crackstone in the final confrontation.
- Laurel’s resurrection plot collapses. Tyler and Laurel are taken into custody or otherwise left in uncertain circumstances rather than receiving definitive on-screen fates.
The victory is collective even though Wednesday remains the investigator and the person who defeats Crackstone. Enid, Bianca, Eugene, Thing and Goody each provide a necessary part of the outcome.

What remains unresolved for Season 2
Who is stalking Wednesday?
After the apparent victory, Wednesday receives anonymous text messages accompanied by photographs of her. The sender has been watching her, making the stalker the clearest personal mystery carried into the next season. The messages also confirm that Wednesday’s belief that every loose end is closed is premature.
Is Tyler dead?
Season 1 does not give Tyler a definitive death. His Hyde identity is exposed, but the ending leaves his ultimate fate unresolved rather than confirming that he is dead.

What happened to Laurel?
Laurel’s defeat ends the Crackstone ritual, but the season does not provide a full account of her imprisonment or longer-term fate. Her survival and consequences are therefore part of the unresolved continuation.
Co-creator Miles Millar told Netflix’s Tudum that “not all the loose ends have been tied up as neatly as Wednesday thinks they have,” which directly describes these open threads.
