Directed by Nicholas Hytner and written by Alan Bennett, it follows the society’s new chorus master and the young men recruited to fill its ranks. It is a scripted feature, not a documentary.
What is The Choral about?
Set in Ramsden, Yorkshire, in 1916, the story begins with the local Choral Society short of men because many have joined the army. The committee brings in local young men and appoints Dr. Henry Guthrie, played by Ralph Fiennes, as chorus master. As conscription papers arrive, rehearsals and the society’s plans unfold against the pressure of the war and the Western Front. The premise comes from the film’s official site; the fictional society should not be mistaken for a documented historical organization.

Music is central to the drama rather than a route out of its wartime reality. The Associated Press review describes the musical arc through Edward Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius, including the community’s effort to perform and reinterpret the work. That is a reviewer’s account of the film, not a claim that music erases the costs of war.
Who made the film, and who is in the cast?
Nicholas Hytner directed and Alan Bennett wrote The Choral. Sony UK identifies it as the fourth film collaboration between the pair, following The Madness of King George, The History Boys and The Lady in the Van. The listed cast includes Ralph Fiennes, Roger Allam, Mark Addy, Alun Armstrong, Robert Emms and Simon Russell Beale, according to the Sony UK film page.

Is The Choral based on a true story?
The available official synopsis presents a fictional choral society and its members in a specific wartime setting; it does not identify Ramsden’s society as a real historical organization. The film is best approached as historical fiction, not as a documentary or a verified account of a particular choir. Its 1916 Yorkshire setting and the pressures of enlistment and conscription frame the story, but the premise alone does not establish that the characters or events are historical.

Who is the film likely to suit?
- For a music-centered drama: The society’s rehearsals and Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius are part of the story’s dramatic shape.
- For a wartime ensemble story: The focus is on a community and its choir as enlistment and conscription affect who can take part.
- For documentary viewers: Treat it as a scripted historical drama rather than a factual documentary about a real choir.
- For choosing a format: Sony lists digital and Blu-ray options in the US; check local services and retailers for current availability and whether you prefer streaming or a physical copy.
