The Los Angeles Police Department classified the case as voluntary missing, reported no evidence of trafficking, foul play or criminal activity involving her, and closed the case after U.S. Customs and Border Protection notified police that she presented herself to re-enter the United States on December 15 and appeared in good health.
What LAPD said happened
Kobayashi flew from Maui to Los Angeles on November 8, 2024, intending to continue to New York. She did not board that connecting flight. LAPD later said she collected her checked luggage at Los Angeles International Airport.
According to the department, surveillance footage showed Kobayashi leaving LAX with her luggage on November 11 and traveling to Union Station. She used her passport to buy a bus ticket for a destination near the Mexico border. Video then showed her taking a bus to San Ysidro and walking alone across the border into Mexico on November 12, approximately 125 miles (201 kilometers) southeast of Los Angeles.
LAPD said investigators found no evidence that she had been trafficked, harmed or otherwise victimized by a criminal act. The department asked her to contact relatives or authorities so they could confirm her welfare.

What “voluntary missing” means in this case
“Voluntary missing” was LAPD’s classification for the investigation. It describes the department’s assessment that Kobayashi left and crossed the border on her own, based on surveillance and other investigative information. It does not establish why she traveled, what she intended to do, or that every aspect of her disappearance was freely chosen.
The classification also should not be read as a finding that relatives’ concerns were unfounded. Police initially needed to determine where she was and whether she was in danger. Once officials received confirmation that she had returned to the United States in good health, LAPD ended the missing-person case.
Rank #2
What happened to her father, Ryan Kobayashi?
Ryan Kobayashi traveled to Los Angeles in late November to help look for his daughter. Her family confirmed that he died by suicide near LAX during the search. His death was a separate tragedy occurring while the missing-person investigation was still active; it is not evidence of what happened to Hannah or of criminal involvement in her case.
Was Hannah Kobayashi found?
Yes. On December 11, her family and police said she was safe. The later, more specific update came from CBP: on December 15 she presented herself to re-enter the United States and appeared in good health. LAPD then closed the case and removed her from the national missing-person system on December 16.
What is still unknown?
Publicly verified information does not establish Kobayashi’s reason for leaving, where she stayed in Mexico, or the content of private messages or conversations after she crossed the border. LAPD referred to her desire to “step away from modern connectivity,” but that phrase does not prove a particular motive.
Online theories about trafficking, coercion, a secret relationship or other explanations should not be presented as facts. The strongest public evidence remains the surveillance account, the official finding that no criminal victimization was identified, and the CBP notification that she returned in good health.

When reports differ, weigh them by three factors:
- Source authority: LAPD and CBP statements describe official investigative or border records; family statements describe what relatives were told or observed; news reconstructions may combine multiple accounts.
- Publication date: Later updates supersede earlier assumptions, especially the December 15 CBP notification and December 16 case closure.
- Type of evidence: Surveillance and agency notifications are direct evidence of movements or status. A proposed motive that is not confirmed by police, family or Kobayashi remains speculation.
LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell summarized the department’s priority during the search: “Our priority is ensuring Ms. Kobayashi’s safety and well-being.”
