Anthropic used its first Super Bowl campaign to warn that advertising could intrude on personal AI conversations, portraying assistants that turn helpful exchanges into awkward product pitches. The target was OpenAI’s plan to show ads in ChatGPT—not a documented plan to make the model insert sales copy into its answers. Sam Altman called the portrayal dishonest, while defending advertising as one way to support access to AI.

What Anthropic’s Super Bowl ads showed

The campaign’s recurring joke was a sudden switch: a conversation begins as an ordinary request for help, then the assistant veers into a conspicuous commercial pitch. One spot uses a fitness scenario involving pull-ups, turning a personal exchange into a sales moment. The contrast—between the tone of a helpful assistant and the tone of an ad—is the point.

Anthropic presented the campaign as its first Super Bowl advertising effort and used it to promote a broader promise: Claude would remain ad-free. The fitness spot also invited comparison with OpenAI’s own Super Bowl marketing, but the campaign’s argument was about OpenAI’s planned ChatGPT advertising, not a claim that every ChatGPT conversation already worked like the commercial. Reporting distinguished the broader set of campaign ads from the spots expected to air during the game, so it is safer not to assume every version ran during the broadcast. Ars Technica’s coverage describes the campaign and that distinction.

Anthropic announced its ad-free position on February 4, 2026. Its pledge says Claude will remain ad-free and rules out sponsored links adjacent to Claude conversations and third-party placements users did not request. The company’s reasoning is that an assistant used for thinking and work should not mix a conversation with commercial persuasion. Anthropic’s announcement lays out that position.

What OpenAI had actually announced

OpenAI announced on January 16, 2026 that it would test advertising in the United States for ChatGPT’s Free and Go tiers. At the time of that announcement, OpenAI said Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise would not carry ads. It framed the plan as a way to help fund broader access, including free use.

The announced format matters. OpenAI said sponsored placements would appear below answers, be clearly labeled and visually distinct, and not influence the answer itself. It also said advertisers would not receive users’ conversations, and that ads would be excluded for minors and in sensitive or regulated contexts. Those were OpenAI’s stated design commitments, not independently verified guarantees. The January announcement describes the proposal; later Help Center guidance describes the operational format and controls.

As of the Help Center guidance available in August 2026, OpenAI described a phased advertising program in multiple markets. It listed Free and Go as potentially ad-supported and Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu as ad-free, with availability subject to region and rollout. Users may also have an Ads-Free mode, but OpenAI says choosing it can reduce message limits and remove access to some tools. Turning off ad personalization is a different setting: it affects relevance, not necessarily whether ads appear. Because availability and controls can change, check the current Help Center for the account and region in question.

OpenAI’s advertiser materials also describe using conversation context and intent signals to make ads more relevant. That is distinct from giving advertisers access to chats or letting them dictate model answers, both of which OpenAI says it does not do. The distinction does not settle whether an ad prompted by a conversation feels intrusive to a user. OpenAI’s advertiser basics explain the stated relevance approach.

What Sam Altman said

After Anthropic released or teased the campaign, Altman acknowledged that the ads were funny and said he laughed, but called their depiction “clearly dishonest.” He argued that OpenAI would not run ads in the way shown and defended advertising as a way to serve people who cannot or do not want to pay for AI. He also contrasted OpenAI’s scale with Anthropic’s smaller customer base. Coverage reported especially sharp language, including his description of Anthropic’s approach as “authoritarian.”

Some coverage characterized the post as rant-like because it was unusually long and combative. That is a description of its tone, not a neutral fact about the substance. The core disagreement was more specific: Altman disputed the ads’ depiction of the product, while Anthropic argued that even separately displayed advertising can undermine the character of an AI conversation. TechCrunch’s account reports the exchange.

Was Anthropic’s criticism fair?

Where the ads stretched the facts

The commercials dramatized an assistant effectively interrupting its own response with a sales pitch. OpenAI’s published design instead describes a labeled placement below the response, separated from its text. OpenAI says advertisers cannot change answers. So the ads were satire about a feared form of conversational advertising, not a literal demonstration of the format OpenAI said it planned to use.

That difference makes Altman’s objection to the literal portrayal understandable. It does not make the concern invented: OpenAI did plan ads associated with conversational context, and its own advertiser materials describe relevance signals that can include context and intent. An ad shown after a conversation about a personal need may still feel connected to the advice, even if the model did not write or endorse it.

Why the underlying concern is real

People may share intimate details, ask for guidance, or rely on an assistant to help them think. A sponsored suggestion in that setting can carry a different implication from a banner on an ordinary webpage: users may mistake proximity to the answer for endorsement, or worry that commercial incentives shape what the assistant says. Anthropic’s strongest case is therefore about trust and the role of the interface, not proof that OpenAI’s ads alter model outputs.

OpenAI’s strongest case is that clear labeling, separation from answers, limits on sensitive placements, and restrictions on advertiser access can preserve a distinction between assistance and advertising while helping fund access. These are meaningful safeguards if implemented as described, but company policies alone cannot establish how users will experience them or whether the separation will always be clear in practice.

What the dispute says about each company’s business model

Anthropic turned “ad-free” into a product differentiator: a promise about the environment in which users work, not proof that Claude is more private, accurate, or capable. The Super Bowl campaign also bought the company attention and sharpened Claude’s association with focus and trust. Coverage interpreted Altman’s response as a sign the campaign had landed, but there is no reliable conversion figure here showing that it increased users, revenue, or market share.

OpenAI framed ads as a way to support free access alongside paid plans. That trade-off is familiar in digital services, but an assistant is not simply a page of search results: contextual relevance may make advertising more useful while also making it feel more personal. The unresolved question is whether labeling and placement are enough to keep commercial messages from being perceived as part of the assistant’s advice.

How the ad policies affect a choice between Claude and ChatGPT

Question Claude ChatGPT
Public ad position Anthropic says Claude will remain ad-free, including no sponsored links adjacent to conversations or unrequested third-party placements. OpenAI’s August 2026 Help Center guidance lists Free and Go as potentially ad-supported, and Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu as ad-free; availability can vary by region and rollout.
Company’s stated rationale Anthropic says ads conflict with a focused space for thinking and work. OpenAI says ads can help support access and are kept separate from answers.
What the user may trade The ad-free pledge does not mean the product is free or establish its current price or usage limits. Eligible users may see ads; OpenAI says its Ads-Free mode can reduce message limits and remove some tools.
What this does not prove Ad-free positioning alone does not establish superior privacy, accuracy, or task performance. Published separation and privacy safeguards do not prove every user will find ads unobtrusive or commercially neutral.

If avoiding advertising inside or alongside an AI workspace is a firm requirement, Anthropic’s explicit pledge is the clearer fit. If access to ChatGPT’s ecosystem or features matters more, OpenAI’s paid plans are listed as ad-free in its current guidance, while eligible Free and Go experiences may include ads. In either case, judge privacy and model quality separately from advertising policy.

For businesses considering ChatGPT ads rather than choosing an assistant, OpenAI describes CPM and CPC buying through its Ads Manager. Eligibility restrictions apply, and the available information does not establish a particular campaign’s reach, conversion rate, or return.

Why the argument outlasts the Super Bowl spot

The campaign staged a dispute over where an AI assistant ends and an advertising surface begins. Anthropic argued that commercial placements compromise the feeling of a trusted thinking space; OpenAI argued that labeled ads can sit outside the answer and help fund wider access. Anthropic’s commercial was not a faithful depiction of OpenAI’s stated format, but it put a durable product question in front of users: whether a paid, ad-free environment or a subsidized, ad-supported one better matches how they want to use an assistant.
