MangaDex’s “2+ weeks” offline notice referred to a March 2021 cyberattack and a planned minimum release of its rewritten site, v5—not a current outage. MangaDex reported unauthorized access to an administrator account, then kept the service offline while developers worked on the rebuild. The two-week figure was an estimate, not a reopening promise.
What happened to MangaDex in March 2021?
On March 17, 2021, MangaDex said an attacker had gained unauthorized access to an administrator account. The incident came amid outages and DDoS-related disruption. The attacker also sent messages to some users claiming the site’s database had been leaked. MangaDex had not yet established the full scope, but advised users to act as though account data might be compromised. MangaDex’s March 21 announcement described the incident and the subsequent shutdown decision.
MangaDex said the attacker reportedly reused a session token associated with an older database leak, exploiting faulty session-management configuration. That is more specific than saying only that the site was “hacked”: the reported path involved a valid session token and an administrator account. Contemporaneous reporting by TorrentFreak also described the token-reuse explanation.

What MangaDex data may have been exposed?
Early statements and reporting identified account and activity information that could have been present in the compromised database. Possible fields included email addresses, usernames, password hashes, account-creation and last-connection IP addresses, backup two-factor-authentication codes, RSS keys, follows, comments, private messages, and other account records. This list describes potentially affected data, not proof that an attacker accessed or published every listed item.

MangaDex initially said it had not fully confirmed the database’s exposure, then advised users to treat it as breached. Later, TorrentFreak reported that the database was confirmed to be circulating. This supports describing the event as a genuine data breach, while not establishing that every record was accessed or that every user experienced identity theft.
Contemporary discussion said passwords were hashed and salted, but that does not make password exposure harmless. The risk depends on factors including password strength and whether the same password was used elsewhere. MangaDex’s advice was to change any password shared with another account. The archived initial breach discussion reflects the password and data-category concerns at the time.

What should former MangaDex users do?
- Change every reused password. Prioritize email, financial, social, and other important accounts. Changing only the MangaDex password does not protect another service where you used the same one.
- Use a unique password for each service. A password manager can generate and store distinct credentials; do not reuse a replacement password.
- Change the MangaDex password too, if you can still access the account. Enable two-factor authentication where available, and secure the email account associated with it.
- Review important accounts for unexpected logins or changes. Treat unexpected password-reset messages, login alerts, and direct messages as possible phishing attempts; go to the service directly rather than following an unsolicited link.
- Check your email address through a reputable breach-notification service. A match can show that an address appears in known breach records, but cannot prove whether a particular MangaDex record was accessed. Never enter your password into a breach-checking site.
- Do not seek out or circulate alleged database dumps. They may expose other people’s personal information and may contain malicious files.
Why did MangaDex stay offline?
On March 21, MangaDex said it would remain offline while developers accelerated a planned rewrite rather than return the existing platform quickly and continue making repairs against attacks. The decision traded a faster reopening for time to build and validate a replacement. MangaDex’s explanation of the rebuild provides additional context on the project’s rationale.
The first v5 release was intended as a minimum viable product with reading, uploading, and following. It was not described as full feature parity with the previous site. The project was maintained by volunteers, and MangaDex did not offer a firm reopening date while work and security checks remained in progress.

What did “2+ weeks” mean?
The phrase was an estimate for getting a basic v5 release ready, not a guaranteed return date. The operators discussed roughly two weeks, possibly three, and warned that volunteer development could take longer. “Until v5 releases” meant the minimum secure version, not a promise that every old feature would be restored on that schedule. The archived March 21 timeline discussion records that uncertainty.
What was MangaDex v5 supposed to include?
V5 was presented as a substantial rewrite of the site’s codebase, not simply a new visual theme. The announced initial scope focused on reading, uploads, and follows, with broader features to be developed over time. Contemporary material also discussed an open-source frontend, use of Vuetify during accelerated minimum-product development, and an eventual design expected to use a CSS framework rather than a UI library such as Vuetify. Possible bug-bounty work or community security reporting was also discussed. These were plans described at the time; they should not be read as proof that every design or security measure was ultimately implemented. What about bookmarks and follows?
During the shutdown, MangaDex said it planned to restore a limited v3 environment so users could export bookmarks and related information, and said follows would not be erased in the new site. Those were MangaDex’s stated plans and assurances at the time, not independently guaranteed outcomes. The archived coverage reproduces those statements.
What did later reporting establish?
Later reporting that the database was circulating strengthened the conclusion that the incident involved a real data breach, rather than only a temporary service compromise. Separately, reporting said site source code had been exposed and that MangaDex used a GitHub DMCA process to limit its distribution. That source-code exposure is distinct from the user-data issue. Mozilla’s MangaDex breach record is another reference for the incident. None of these accounts establishes that every user was individually targeted or that the breach caused identity theft.
Where could readers turn for manga instead?
The shutdown-era recommendations of unofficial aggregators and apps do not establish that those services are licensed, secure, private, free of harmful advertising, or currently available. Treating them as interchangeable alternatives would require checking those factors for the specific service and the reader’s country.
Readers looking for another source can consider licensed publisher and subscription services, licensed digital stores, library services, or reader apps used with legally obtained files. A community platform that does not host unauthorized copies is another distinct option. Availability, licensing, privacy practices, offline reading, and list portability vary, so no single option can be called a safe replacement on the evidence of the 2021 outage coverage alone.
