In Saturday Night Live’s Nov. 1, 2025 cold open, James Austin Johnson’s Donald Trump interrupts a fictional New York City mayoral debate, announces that he is the city’s biggest problem and closes with a Phantom of the Opera gag. Ramy Youssef, Miles Teller and Shane Gillis play Zohran Mamdani, Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa, respectively. TheWrap reported on the sketch.
What happens in the cold open?
The sketch begins as a debate among the three fictional mayoral candidates, moderated by Kenan Thompson as journalist Errol Lewis. When Lewis asks what they see as New York’s biggest problem, Johnson’s Trump interrupts and answers, “It’s me!”
He then insists that the election is really about him, not housing or taxes, and says he will be “very involved, very hands-on.” The Daily Beast and TheWrap report the exchange.

The real Andrew Cuomo reference also supplies a joke in the sketch. The Daily Beast notes that Cuomo resigned as New York governor in 2021 after allegations from 13 women.

What does Trump sing?
Johnson’s Trump says he may no longer live in New York but is “always watching, lurking in the shadows,” like the Phantom of the Opera. He raises a partial white mask and sings part of “The Music of the Night,” the closing musical gag described by TheWrap.
