Spotify has not generally discontinued Canvas. The looping visuals remain an active feature, but whether you see one depends on the track, your account settings, device, and sometimes regional availability or feature rollout. Start by testing several songs in Spotify’s mobile app: if only one lacks a visual, that track may simply have no Canvas.
Spotify for Artists still describes Canvas and provides upload instructions (Spotify for Artists; adding a Canvas). Spotify also continues to publish listener troubleshooting and account video settings. The key is to identify whether the missing item is the setting, a particular song’s visual, or playback on one device.
First, identify what disappeared
- One song has no Canvas: Canvas is optional and supplied by the artist or rights holder, so the track may not have one.
- No songs show Canvas: Check the account’s Canvas/video setting, Data Saver, and the device you are using.
- The Canvas setting itself is missing: The app interface, account rollout, or region may differ. A missing toggle does not by itself prove the feature was removed.
- It works on your phone but not elsewhere: Platform support and rendering differ; mobile is the clearest officially documented playback environment.
- You are an artist: An upload in Spotify for Artists and playback in the public Spotify app are separate issues. Check the correct track version, rights, and file requirements.
Canvas is different from full music videos, animated album artwork, and other looping visuals in Spotify. This guide concerns the short Canvas attached to a track.
Try these checks in order
1. Test several tracks
Play multiple tracks by different artists in the mobile app. If only one lacks a visual, it may not have an artist-uploaded Canvas. If none show one, keep troubleshooting. If the same account works on another device, suspect the original app or platform; if another account works on the same device, suspect an account setting or account-specific availability.

2. Turn Canvas on
- Open Spotify and tap your profile picture.
- Choose Settings and privacy.
- Open Content and display, or look for Videos and Canvas in the current interface.
- Turn Canvas on.
Spotify’s labels and grouping can vary by app version. Its listener troubleshooting page documents the mobile setting, while its newer Video settings page groups Canvas with video controls (Canvas troubleshooting; Video settings).
3. Turn Data Saver off
In the app, go to Profile picture → Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline → Data Saver, then switch it off. Spotify specifically lists Data Saver as a setting to check when Canvas is missing. If Canvas appears on Wi‑Fi but not cellular data, also check your phone’s data and battery restrictions. Spotify’s data-usage guidance documents the older desktop Canvas control, Display short, looping visuals on tracks (Canvas), under Profile picture → Settings → Display (internet and data usage).
4. Check account-wide video settings and Family controls
Spotify says its Video settings can apply across the platforms and devices where the account is used. If Canvas vanished on multiple devices, check the account-wide setting rather than only the phone’s local menu. A Premium Family manager can also control video and Canvas settings for individual members; a member who cannot change the option may need the manager to review it.

- Family manager on mobile: Profile picture → Your Premium → Manage under Subscription → choose a member → Videos and Canvas.
- Family manager on the web: Account page → Subscription → Manage members → choose a member → Videos and Canvas.
Spotify says Canvas visuals may still appear for free, ad-supported listeners during audio ads, so Premium is not automatically required for Canvas (Video settings).
5. Test on a supported mobile setup
Spotify’s artist troubleshooting page identifies the mobile app as the Canvas playback environment and lists iOS 12 or later and Android 6.0 or later. Its newer Video settings page describes controls across mobile/tablet, desktop, web player, and TV, while Spotify Community guidance says Canvas is not supported on tablets and TVs. These sources do not describe platform support consistently. Use an up-to-date iPhone or Android phone app as the practical baseline; do not assume Canvas must appear on a tablet, TV, desktop, or web player.
6. Refresh the app
- Fully close Spotify and reopen it.
- Restart the device and install any available Spotify update.
- Sign out and back in, then test several tracks again.
- If it still fails, try a clean reinstall and repeat the test.
Spotify Community guidance recommends signing out and back in (including trying the sign-out process twice) and a clean reinstall for Canvas problems. These are troubleshooting suggestions, not guaranteed fixes (Spotify Community Canvas guidance).

7. Check desktop animation settings if the issue is desktop-only
Spotify Community guidance identifies operating-system animation preferences as possible causes of desktop visuals failing to render. On Windows, check whether Animate controls and elements inside windows is enabled in system performance settings. On macOS, check whether Reduce Motion is enabled. These are community troubleshooting possibilities, not documented universal Spotify requirements.

Settings follow the account
A change to the account’s video controls may affect more than one device. Check the same account’s Video settings wherever Spotify offers them, and ask a Family manager to check member controls if relevant.
Availability can differ by market or rollout
Spotify’s Canvas troubleshooting page lists supported countries and regions; availability in one market does not establish availability everywhere. Travel, a VPN, or a mismatch between your location and account country can complicate testing. Spotify Community moderators have also said features may not reach every user or market and can be tested or changed temporarily. That means Canvas working for a friend in the same country does not prove every account has identical access (Spotify Community discussion of feature availability).

A post-update change is not proof of removal
An app update can coincide with a reset preference, relocated menu, rendering bug, or account-side experiment. Community reports describe Canvas disappearing for some users, but do not establish a single global outage or permanent discontinuation (Spotify Community report).

If you are the artist who uploaded the Canvas
First confirm you are looking at the public version of the track you edited. Explicit and clean editions, single and album releases, remasters, and label or distributor versions may be separate track entries. Spotify says that with split or label-owned rights, you may only be able to add a Canvas to versions you own; confirm you selected the correct version. Spotify also specifies artist-role and access requirements: you must be the first main artist on the track, be a main artist on both track and release, and have an Admin or Editor role in Spotify for Artists (listener and rights troubleshooting).
Check the Canvas file
Spotify’s documented upload specifications are 3–8 seconds long, vertical 9:16, 720–1080 pixels high, and MP4 or JPG. Check Spotify’s current Canvas guidelines and upload-error help if the upload fails. A successful upload in Spotify for Artists does not guarantee that every listener, account, market, or platform will display it.

When the upload appears in Spotify for Artists but not publicly
Verify the exact track URI or release version, then test the public track on the mobile app with more than one listener account. If the upload is attached to a different version or you do not control that version’s rights, the public track you are checking may not be the one carrying the Canvas. If the correct version and rights are confirmed but playback still fails, report the track and account details to Spotify support.
When to contact Spotify support
Escalate after Canvas is enabled, Data Saver is off, and several tracks that should have visuals still show none in an up-to-date mobile app. It is particularly useful to contact support if the same account fails on multiple phones while another account works on the same phone, or if the Canvas setting is absent across clients.
Include your account username or email, country, device model and operating-system version, Spotify app version, affected platforms, Canvas and Data Saver settings, and several example track links. Add a screenshot or screen recording and state whether another account works on the same device. This helps distinguish a track issue from a device or account problem.
