Some Spotify Free users report hitting a lyrics limit and seeing a Premium prompt, but Spotify has not announced a universal paywall. Its support page says online lyrics are available on both Free and Premium plans; availability can still depend on the song, device, market, and rights-holder agreements. The clear Premium-only distinction is offline lyrics.
What Spotify’s current policy says
Spotify’s lyrics support page says lyrics are available to Free and Premium users. That statement does not rule out account-level tests or limits, but it does mean a blanket claim that all online lyrics now require Premium is not supported by Spotify’s published policy.
The same page cautions that lyrics are not available for every song or on every device. Market availability, song metadata, and rights-holder agreements can also affect what appears. Premium therefore does not guarantee lyrics for every track.
Which lyric features are free, and which require Premium?
Spotify’s February 4, 2026 feature announcement separates three functions:

That split matters: Spotify has confirmed a Premium-only offline lyrics feature, not a universal Premium requirement for lyrics.
Why the paywall reports are resurfacing
Spotify tested restrictions in 2024
In May 2024, reports described Spotify showing some Free users a Premium upsell for lyrics. Spotify characterized the change as a test, not a permanent worldwide policy. Early coverage reported a limit of three songs per month, but Spotify did not publish a lasting, universal quota. In July, Spotify was reported to have expanded the Free-user allowance without disclosing its exact size. See TechCrunch’s May 2024 report and its July 2024 follow-up.

A 2026 user report is not proof of a global rollout
A Spotify Community post dated January 1, 2026 describes a Free user seeing the message “hit your lyrics limit for this month” and a Premium prompt. That is evidence that a user encountered a limit, not confirmation of how many accounts or markets are affected. The post does not establish a company-wide rule or a current quota. Spotify’s own September 2025 guide had described lyrics in the Free experience, with users swiping up in mobile Now Playing to see available lyrics scrolling in real time: Spotify’s Free-experience guide.
As of August 18, 2026, the available official statements establish Free access to lyrics in principle and Premium access to offline lyrics. They do not establish a global Free-tier limit, the number of affected users, or an announced expansion of a paywall. Individual reports may reflect a test, an account-specific limit, or a regional experience.

How to check what is happening on your account
- Confirm your plan. Check whether the account showing the prompt is on Free or Premium.
- Try several songs. A single missing lyrics panel may be a song-level availability issue rather than a subscription restriction.
- Check another device. Try the same account on mobile and desktop, since lyrics are not supported uniformly on every device.
- Update and refresh the app. Install any available Spotify update, sign out and back in, then restart the app.
- Open the lyrics panel. On mobile, check the full lyrics view rather than assuming a lyric preview under the artwork is the complete synchronized display.
- Check whether the track is downloaded. Offline lyrics are a Premium feature; test online lyrics while connected to the internet.
- Record the message and context. Note the exact wording, date, country, device, app version, and whether it happens across multiple songs. This helps distinguish an account limit from a song or device issue.
- Consult Spotify’s guidance or support. Check the lyrics support page and contact Spotify support if access disappears unexpectedly.
If the restriction is tied to an account-level quota, local troubleshooting cannot be relied on to remove it. Avoid treating repeated reinstalls or cache clearing as a way to bypass a server-side limit.

For someone who occasionally reads online lyrics, an upgrade is difficult to justify on lyrics alone: Spotify’s published guidance still includes Free users. Premium is more relevant if you want offline lyrics alongside downloaded music, or if ad-free playback and other Premium features matter to you. It may also offer a more predictable experience if your account is subject to a Free-tier limit, but Spotify has not published a universal quota or guarantee that upgrading is necessary for all online lyrics.

These are time- and market-specific page signals, not guaranteed current prices; eligibility, billing method, promotions, and location can change the amount. What remains uncertain
- Spotify has not published a current universal number of lyrics Free users may view.
- The January 2026 Community report does not show how widespread the limit is or whether it applies consistently across regions and accounts.
- Spotify has not confirmed that it formally expanded a Free-tier lyrics restriction to a defined share of users in 2026.
- Spotify’s support guidance and individual user reports can describe different experiences: the former states the general availability policy, while the latter may reveal tests or account-specific behavior.
