Tash Peterson’s Instagram account @vganbooty appeared unavailable on September 18, 2023, days after she posted a photograph showing her bare bottom in a Norway hot tub. Contemporary reports said the profile had more than 22,000 followers and displayed Instagram’s “Sorry, this page isn’t available” message. The timing was real; the cause was not established. Meta would not confirm whether Instagram removed the account or Peterson deactivated it.
What happened to @vganbooty?
The public-facing account disappearance was reported by PerthNow on September 18, 2023. Visitors reportedly saw an unavailable-page error rather than Peterson’s profile.
That message does not, by itself, prove permanent deletion. An unavailable Instagram page can reflect platform suspension, voluntary deactivation, a username change, a temporary technical problem or another account-access issue. The reporting did not establish which explanation applied.

Did the bare-bottom photograph cause the disappearance?
There is no verified answer. The photograph appeared roughly six days before the account became unavailable, which naturally prompted speculation that Instagram’s nudity or sexual-content rules might have been involved. But neither Meta nor Peterson publicly confirmed that the image triggered enforcement.
Reporting also did not identify a specific violating post, show an Instagram Account Status notice, or document the enforcement category. Peterson’s feed reportedly included bikini, lingerie and activist-protest imagery, so several explanations were conceivable. General Instagram rules about nudity cannot prove why this particular account became unavailable.

What did Meta say?
Meta declined to confirm whether Instagram had removed the account or whether Peterson had removed it herself, citing privacy reasons, according to PerthNow. That leaves key questions unanswered:
- Whether the account was suspended, disabled, deactivated, renamed or compromised.
- Whether any action was temporary or permanent.
- Which post, if any, led to enforcement.
- Whether Peterson appealed or received a formal violation notice.
Accordingly, “Instagram deleted her account because of the photo” goes beyond the evidence. “The account appeared to vanish days after the photo” is supported.

What happened to Peterson’s backup account?
The follow-up report said Peterson relied on @vganbootie, a backup account reportedly created in January 2022. It also said the profile was difficult to locate through ordinary Instagram search. PerthNow characterized that as a “shadow-ban,” but no public Meta statement confirmed an official restriction or used that label.
Peterson continued posting on Facebook and X at the time. Her linked online hubs also remained available, including Tash Peterson’s Linktree and the V-Gan Booty Linktree, which list activist resources, merchandise and other channels. Those pages document an ongoing web presence; they do not establish whether either Instagram handle is active, restored or renamed today.

Where does the Fyre lawsuit fit?
Mountain announced legal action on September 15, three days before the account was reported unavailable. He alleged that Peterson’s posts and material connected with a protest brought “hatred, contempt and ridicule” against him. The reported claims involved Facebook, X and events surrounding Fyre.
The lawsuit is relevant timing and context, not an explanation for Instagram’s action. No available report links the case to a court request, and Meta did not cite the lawsuit as a reason for the account’s status.

What can—and cannot—be said now?
- The disappearance was a genuine reported event in September 2023.
- The Norway photograph preceded it by about six days.
- Meta did not publicly identify who removed the account or why.
- The photograph’s causal role remains speculation.
- “Banned” reflects Peterson’s or media wording, not a publicly confirmed Meta finding.
- The 2023 reports do not establish the status of @vganbooty or @vganbootie in 2026.
Bottom line
Tash Peterson’s @vganbooty profile did appear unavailable in September 2023, shortly after the Norway photograph. That sequence explains the headlines, but it does not prove Instagram removed the account because of the image—or even prove that Meta removed it at all. The platform’s only reported position was that it would not disclose the account’s status for privacy reasons.
