Francesca Bridgerton’s novel is the series’ sixth book, When He Was Wicked. She marries John Stirling, who later dies; John’s cousin Michael inherits the Kilmartin title, and Francesca and Michael eventually fall in love and marry. Netflix changes Michael into Michaela, so the show’s story follows the novel’s emotional premise but not its exact character or established ending.
Which Bridgerton book tells Francesca’s story?
Francesca is the central character in Julia Quinn’s sixth Regency-era Bridgerton novel, When He Was Wicked. The book is available in print, digital and audio editions through the formats listed on Quinn’s official author page.
What happens to Francesca and John?
Francesca marries John Stirling, Earl of Kilmartin. Their marriage is affectionate and genuine; John is not merely an obstacle standing between Francesca and another romance. That matters because Francesca’s later relationship is shaped by real love and bereavement rather than a simple rejection of her first husband.
John eventually dies, leaving Francesca grieving. In the novel, his death also changes the succession: John’s cousin Michael becomes Earl of Kilmartin. Netflix’s season-four continuity likewise makes Francesca a widow after John’s death, but screen-specific details should not be treated as quotations of the book.

When does Michael fall in love with Francesca?
Michael Stirling is already in love with Francesca before she marries John, his cousin. Quinn’s excerpt opens in London in March 1820, at a supper celebrating Francesca’s imminent wedding. Michael sees her and realizes he has fallen in love, creating the concealed longing that drives much of the novel.
Francesca does not simply move from John to Michael. Michael’s feelings, Francesca’s loyalty to John, and her grief after John’s death all make the eventual romance a slow process. The central question is whether Francesca can build another life without treating her first marriage as disposable.

Do Francesca and Michael end up together?
Yes. After John’s death, Francesca and Michael gradually choose one another and marry. Their relationship is presented as a second chance formed through grief, loyalty and emotional honesty, not as an uncomplicated love triangle.
Michael or Michaela: what changes in Netflix’s adaptation?
| Element | Quinn’s novel | Netflix adaptation |
|---|---|---|
| Francesca’s eventual partner | Michael Stirling, John’s male cousin | Michaela Stirling, a gender-swapped version of Michael |
| Source story | When He Was Wicked | Season 5 is described as inspired by the novel |
| Known ending | Francesca and Michael marry | The released outcome remains unknown |
Netflix’s official character and season-five coverage identifies Michaela as the adaptation’s version of Michael. Showrunner Jess Brownell has said the production is translating the book’s themes of feeling different, uncertainty and second-chance love into Francesca and Michaela’s relationship. She has also connected Francesca’s introversion and sense of difference with experiences that can resonate in queer stories.

What is known about Bridgerton season 5?
In Netflix’s March 30, 2026 update, Francesca and Michaela were announced as season-five leads, and production had begun. The announced setup places Francesca considering a pragmatic return to the marriage market after John’s death before Michaela returns to London. Netflix characterizes the season as a second-chance romance inspired by When He Was Wicked.
Those announcements establish the pairing and premise, not every plot turn. The series has changed Michael’s gender and may rearrange timing, conflicts and resolutions, so the novel’s marriage ending cannot be presented as a confirmed screen ending until the season is released.

Why the book’s grief matters
Francesca and John’s marriage gives her widowhood emotional weight. Michael’s long-held love also creates a moral and emotional complication: he has wanted Francesca for years, but she is mourning someone both of them loved. The novel’s romance develops only as Francesca decides that loving John and choosing a future with Michael can coexist.
