A controller voice is a guide performance: you sing the melody, timing, phrasing and articulation, then an AI vocal tool transfers or rebuilds that performance in another voice. Record a clean guide, preserve its musical intent, choose a tool whose documented input matches your guide, render a short test, and edit the result before committing to a full vocal.
What A Controller Voice Must Capture
Make the guide performance musically explicit. Sing every lyric or use a neutral syllable line only when the destination workflow accepts it. Keep tempo steady, leave a count-in, and avoid reverb, doubled takes and backing tracks in the source file. Mark breaths, held notes, consonant attacks and intentional slides in your session notes; these details are what you will check after conversion.
- Pitch: Perform the actual notes you want the generated vocal to follow.
- Timing: Keep entrances and releases aligned to the project grid.
- Expression: Include dynamics, vibrato and phrasing that you want preserved.
- Words: Use lyrics you have permission to record and transform.

Record And Prepare The Controller Track
- Create a project at the final tempo and record one dry lead guide from the count-in through the last release.
- Trim silence at the head and tail without cutting consonants or breaths.
- Remove instrumental bleed and obvious clipping. Keep the original file untouched so you can compare revisions.
- Export a guide version with the lyric sheet, key, tempo and section names written in the filename or session notes.
- Render a 10-to-20-second chorus phrase first. A short, exposed phrase reveals pitch, timing and pronunciation problems before you spend credits or processing time.
Convert The Performance Into A Different Voice

Keep the first pass conservative, export a short WAV and inspect artifacts at phrase endings and breath sounds. LyricToMelody AI
Use the guide as uploaded or recorded material for custom singing-voice training, or extract a MIDI-led vocal draft from the lyric and melody you have prepared. Build one section at a time, export the MIDI, audio or stems, and finish timing and comping in a DAW. - Mute the guide and listen for wrong note centers, late attacks, clipped consonants and unnatural breaths.
- Fix the controller performance first when the error follows its pitch or timing. Re-record only the problem phrase when possible.
- Fix the generated voice when the guide is correct but the target model adds an artifact. Try a different authorized model or a less aggressive conversion setting.
- For MIDI workflows, edit note lengths, lyric syllable placement and pitch curves before regenerating the phrase.
- Export a new comparison pass with the same phrase name and keep the guide, generated vocal and final edit as separate files.
Consent, Covers And Release Checks
Get consent from the person whose voice is recorded, cloned or used as a model, and keep that consent with the project files. A controller performance does not grant rights to another person’s identity, lyrics, composition or recording. Altered Studio’s free plan specifies an attribution license; ACE Studio lists voice- and feature-specific licensing exceptions; LyricToMelody AI includes commercial rights on paid plans. Applio and RVC WebUI entries do not establish a blanket commercial license for every model or dataset, so check the relevant vendor, model and source-recording terms before publishing.

Export A DAW-Ready Vocal
Keep the dry controller, converted vocal, edited vocal and instrumental reference on separate tracks. Export the format your chosen workflow provides, label the voice model and version, and retain the lyric, MIDI and consent records. This makes later pronunciation fixes or a new target voice possible without re-recording the musical performance.
