Yes: Hulu’s U.S. terms prohibit sharing an account with people outside the subscriber’s household. The updated rule was reported to apply to new subscribers from January 25, 2024, and existing subscribers from March 14, 2024. But that contractual change is not proof that Hulu universally blocks every account used in more than one location. Hulu says it may review account use and restrict or terminate access for violations; it has not publicly documented a universal blocking system or a generally available Hulu extra-member option.
What Hulu’s password-sharing rule says
Hulu’s Subscriber Agreement bars sharing a subscription outside the subscriber’s household unless the applicable service tier expressly allows it. Hulu defines a household around devices associated with the subscriber’s primary personal residence and used by people who live there. In practical terms, the key distinction is whether viewers live in the same primary home—not whether they are related or whether the account holder pays the bill.

The agreement also reserves Hulu’s right to analyze account use for compliance and to limit or terminate access if it determines that the terms have been violated. That is contractual authority, not a published explanation of exactly how Hulu identifies a separate household or what happens in every case.
When did the change take effect?
News reports said the updated restriction applied to new subscribers beginning January 25, 2024, and to existing subscribers beginning March 14, 2024, unless they accepted the revised terms earlier after an in-app notice. CBS News reported the dates; TheWrap and Ars Technica also covered the change.

The Hulu agreement currently surfaced by Disney displays an October 21, 2024 date. That is the date shown on that version of the agreement, not evidence that a new universal enforcement event began then.
Is Hulu actively blocking shared accounts?
The public evidence supports a clear contractual restriction and Hulu’s stated right to enforce it. It does not establish a Netflix-style, universal automated blocking system, a fixed warning process, a required IP address, a published detection method, or a schedule for suspensions. Hulu’s agreement says it may analyze account use, but does not enumerate the signals it uses.

So an account being usable from another location does not make that sharing compliant, and the terms alone do not mean every account with viewers in separate places has already been blocked. If you receive a warning or lose access, follow the instructions in the actual Hulu message and contact Hulu support rather than assuming what the notice means.

- Friend in another home: Sharing credentials with someone who maintains a separate residence falls outside the household rule unless a service tier expressly permits it.
- Adult child, relative, or former partner living elsewhere: Family or past relationship does not itself make a separate residence part of the subscriber’s household.
- People living together: Multiple household members using Hulu on different televisions or mobile devices is consistent with the household definition; the agreement’s sharing restriction is not the same as a one-device rule.
- Temporary travel or a household member away at school: The public terms and support pages do not provide a complete rule for every trip, college arrangement, temporary relocation, or second home. Do not assume either that all away-from-home use is prohibited or that it is guaranteed to work. Ask Hulu about the specific situation through its account and billing support entry point.
Hulu does not publish a complete public matrix for these edge cases. The safest interpretation is to distinguish temporary use by a person who belongs to the household from routine sharing with someone who lives at another address, and to seek support guidance when that distinction is unclear.

What can you do if someone lives in another household?
- Check who uses the account and where they live. The relevant question under Hulu’s definition is whether the people using it reside at the subscriber’s primary personal residence.
- Stop sharing credentials across separate homes if you want to follow the agreement. Paying for the account does not override its household restriction.
- Consider a separate subscription or an eligible bundle. Hulu’s U.S. site displayed Disney+, Hulu Bundle Basic for $12.99 per month and Bundle Premium for $19.99 per month on August 16, 2026. See Hulu’s bundle page for current availability and terms. A bundle may suit someone who wants both services, but it does not by itself authorize sharing one account across two households.
- Choose Live TV only if you need live channels. Hulu displayed Hulu + Live TV with Disney+ and ESPN Select at $89.99 per month and Hulu Premium + Live TV with Disney+ Premium and ESPN Select at $99.99 per month on August 16, 2026. These are U.S. prices shown on Hulu’s Live TV page, which says prices and features may change. Live TV brings regional availability, blackouts, and location or device considerations; it is not a low-cost substitute just to keep borrowed on-demand access.
- Contact Hulu if a legitimate household member is challenged. Use Hulu’s account-security help page or the Help Center; do not assume a warning means the account is permanently banned.
Prices and plan features can change. Check Hulu’s current U.S. pages before choosing a plan; the figures above are dated observations, not guaranteed future prices.
More screens do not mean more households
Simultaneous-stream limits answer how many streams a plan allows at once, not who is eligible to use the account. Hulu’s U.S. bundle page showed two simultaneous Hulu screens for Bundle Basic when checked August 16, 2026. Hulu + Live TV is described as allowing two simultaneous screens by default, with an Unlimited Screens option for additional at-home viewing; the page did not state an add-on price at that time. Neither a larger screen allowance nor an Unlimited Screens add-on is permission to share with a separate residence.

Does Disney+ Extra Member let you add a Hulu user?
Do not assume so. Disney’s December 2024 paid-sharing explanation describes an Extra Member option for eligible Disney+ subscribers, with U.S. prices of $6.99 per month for certain Basic subscriptions and $9.99 per month for certain Premium subscriptions. That announcement concerns Disney+; it does not verify a generally available Hulu-specific extra-member plan, price, or enrollment path.
Changing a password, switching devices repeatedly, or using a VPN is not an approved way around Hulu’s household rule. The reviewed Hulu terms do not authorize those approaches as a sharing solution.
