Scott Stulen, Seattle Art Museum’s Illsley Ball Nordstrom Director and CEO, is open to technology and AI—but not to using them for their own sake. His stated test is whether they help people encounter art, improve access or give the public a place to consider issues reshaping society. He has said he would consider showing AI-created art at SAM; that is an expression of openness, not an announced exhibition or institutional AI policy.
Who is Scott Stulen?
SAM’s leadership page lists Stulen as its current Illsley Ball Nordstrom Director and CEO. He began the job on August 26, 2024, after leading the Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa. In a 2024 interview with GeekWire, he described himself as a maker and creator, with a background in studio art.
His earlier audience experiments included an Internet Cat Festival and a mini-golf course. Those projects do not, by themselves, demonstrate technical expertise. They do show a willingness to try formats that invite participation from people who might not begin with a traditional gallery visit. His experience is relevant to SAM’s challenge: creating more ways into a museum without treating the art as a pretext for entertainment.

When Stulen’s appointment was discussed in 2024, the institutional context included a goal of rebuilding attendance and membership toward pre-pandemic levels and contributing to downtown Seattle’s revitalization, as GeekWire reported. That was a stated challenge at the time, not evidence of current attendance or membership results.

SAM is also more than one downtown gallery. The museum operates the Seattle Art Museum downtown, the Seattle Asian Art Museum and Olympic Sculpture Park, according to its about page. Reaching new audiences across those distinct settings raises practical questions: who feels welcome, what barriers keep people away, and how can a visitor be invited to look more closely rather than simply pass through?
For a museum, innovation has to balance public relevance with conservation, curatorial judgment and the unhurried experience of encountering an artwork. Stulen has rejected the idea that progress means filling galleries with giant projections. In the 2024 interview, he emphasized that looking at a painting slowly and without mediation remains central. The technology, in that view, should support the encounter rather than compete with it.
What “innovation” means in practice
New entry points for audiences
Stulen has framed innovation around helping people find a way into the museum and engage with more of what is already there. That could mean experimenting with programs, formats or interpretation, but each experiment still needs a clear audience and purpose. A playful event may attract a first-time visitor; the harder question is whether the experience gives that person a reason to return or explore the collection.

Using data without reducing people to metrics
Stulen said he wanted a data-driven, nimble approach. In a museum, that can involve information such as ticketing, membership renewal, repeat visits, program participation, online collection use or visitor feedback. Those measures can help staff understand whether an initiative reached its intended audience. They do not, by themselves, establish that visitors learned more or had a richer encounter with art.
Good use of data also requires decisions about privacy and purpose. A museum should be able to explain what it collects, how long it retains it, who can access it, and whether the information guides marketing and operations or influences curatorial choices. No verified public scorecard in the cited sources establishes SAM’s current results on these measures.
Technology that expands access
Technology can be valuable even when it is nearly invisible. SAM has described verbal descriptions intended to help visitors with low or no vision experience artworks at Olympic Sculpture Park. The museum’s 2024 account illustrates a mission-focused use: supporting interpretation and access rather than adding a digital spectacle.

Digital interpretation, online collection access, wayfinding and hybrid programs can likewise help visitors, but they are not automatically accessible. App-based interpretation may exclude people without a suitable phone, data plan or confidence with digital tools. A useful test is whether a tool offers a meaningful benefit and whether visitors still have a workable non-digital option.
What Stulen has—and has not—said about AI
Stulen’s public position is exploratory. In the 2024 GeekWire interview, he said museums cannot act as if AI will disappear, and he expects it to raise difficult questions about authenticity and ownership. He said he personally uses AI for writing and processing information, and that he would be open to presenting AI-created art at SAM if the work and its context were meaningful.

- AI as an artistic medium: an artwork may be generated or partly produced with AI. A museum considering it must make authorship, process and relevant provenance legible to visitors.
- AI as an exhibition subject: artists and curators can examine questions such as labor, bias, ownership and authenticity without the museum itself using generative AI.
- AI in museum operations: tools might assist with writing, search, translation or administrative work. Stulen’s comments about his own use do not establish a SAM-wide deployment or policy.
- AI as a visitor interface: chatbots, personalized recommendations and generative interpretation would be separate choices, with their own accuracy, accessibility and privacy risks. The cited interview does not announce such a system at SAM.
Openness to an AI-made work is not a commitment to acquire or exhibit one. Nor does a technology-themed exhibition prove that an institution has adopted AI in its operations. A responsible presentation would need to make clear whether a work is AI-generated or AI-assisted and who contributed to it. Questions about training data, consent, compensation, attribution and environmental costs would also matter; Stulen’s public remarks do not amount to a settled framework for resolving them.

SAM’s official listings provide context for its interest in contemporary questions, but they do not establish that particular projects were initiated by Stulen or form part of a technology strategy.
A Room for Animal Intelligence
SAM lists A Room for Animal Intelligence for November 28, 2025, through January 31, 2027. The exhibition invites visitors to consider nonhuman intelligence and places that subject in relation to public conversations about AI. That is evidence of programming around intelligence as a cultural question—not evidence that the exhibition presents AI-generated art or that SAM has announced an AI program. See the exhibition page.

Qiu Zhijie’s map of science and technology
SAM’s listings include Qiu Zhijie: Map of the History of Science and Technology, scheduled at Olympic Sculpture Park from January 28, 2026, through January 31, 2029. Its title places it in a technology-related conversation, but the listing alone does not make it an AI exhibition or establish a link to Stulen’s leadership agenda. What would make an AI initiative trustworthy?
If SAM moves from discussing AI to displaying or using it, the public should be able to assess the decision on more than novelty. Relevant questions include:
- Mission fit: Does the use deepen understanding or access, or mainly create spectacle?
- Authorship and rights: Does the museum explain how a work was made, who made consequential choices, and what is known about the data behind it?
- Accuracy and context: If AI assists interpretation, are experts responsible for checking it, and can visitors distinguish machine-generated material from human-authored text?
- Equity and accessibility: Does the experience work for visitors with disabilities and people who do not use smartphones or speak the primary language?
- Privacy: What visitor data is gathered, and is its use clearly disclosed?
- Durability and independence: Can SAM maintain a tool after a pilot or sponsorship ends, and do outside partners leave curatorial decisions to the museum?
- Staff expertise: Are staff trained and supported, rather than expected to rely on tools whose limitations they cannot assess?
These questions also expose common failure modes: a chatbot can confidently misstate an artwork’s history; generated labels can flatten community-specific context; a digital installation can distract from the work it was meant to illuminate. A rise in attendance would not alone show that an experiment improved learning, access or repeat engagement.
What is known about Stulen’s record at SAM?
The public evidence cited here establishes Stulen’s appointment, his stated approach and SAM’s current leadership listing. It does not establish a major SAM AI initiative, an institution-wide AI policy, a measured technology-driven attendance increase, or a causal link between his arrival and particular exhibitions. His 2024 comments are a useful statement of intent, but they were made before he officially started the role and are not an account of subsequent results.
A meaningful assessment would require SAM to publish clear baselines and outcomes: attendance over a defined period, membership acquisition and renewal, first-time and repeat visits, program participation, accessibility-tool use, visitor feedback, and the cost and staff time required for experiments. It would also help to distinguish foot traffic from evidence that visitors engaged more deeply with art. Until those results are documented, the fairest description is that Stulen has articulated a selective, audience-centered technology philosophy—not that technology has transformed SAM.
