Twitch’s “Something went wrong” message is a generic login failure, not a diagnosis: it does not by itself mean your password is wrong, your account is banned, or Twitch is down. Check Twitch’s live status first, then use a clean browser session to separate a local browser problem from an account, verification, network, or service issue.
Check whether Twitch login is down
Open Twitch Status and check the live state of Login, Web, and related services. If Twitch reports a Login incident, wait for the service to recover and follow its updates instead of repeatedly resetting your password or changing browser settings. Status can change, so a previous result is not proof of current availability.

- If the form loads but submission fails, suspect authentication, session data, or verification.
- If only one browser or device fails, focus on its cookies, extensions, app data, or settings.
- If every device fails, check account recovery and verification, then compare networks and Twitch’s status.
- If login succeeds but Twitch immediately signs you out, blocked storage or stale session data may be involved.
The message alone does not establish that your account is banned, compromised, or using an unsupported browser.

Try a clean browser login before changing account details
- Open Twitch in a private or incognito window.
- Go to Twitch’s login page directly rather than using an old bookmark or an embedded login prompt.
- Enter your Twitch username or account email and password manually.
- If that works, return to your regular browser and remove only Twitch’s stored site data, then restart the browser and try again.
- If it still fails, test another mainstream browser. Temporarily disable extensions that can interfere with scripts, cookies, redirects, or authentication, such as ad blockers, script blockers, anti-tracking tools, cookie managers, and VPN or proxy extensions.
A successful private-window login points toward the regular browser’s stored session, cookies, extensions, or privacy settings; it does not prove which one caused the failure. Allow necessary Twitch cookies and redirects rather than weakening privacy protections across every site. Avoid deleting all browser cookies unless you intend to be signed out of other websites too.
Some users have reported extension or stored-data problems in community discussions, but those are anecdotes, not Twitch-confirmed causes: Opera GX login report and cross-browser login report.
Work out whether the issue is your password or verification
Note whether the error appears before or after you enter your password, whether Twitch shows a code prompt, and whether another account can log in on the same device. A password can be correct while a separate email, SMS, or two-factor authentication (2FA) step fails.

Reset a password you may have forgotten
- Use Twitch’s account access and login recovery guide to start password recovery with the email address or phone number associated with the account.
- Check that you are using the account username, not just its display name. If the reset message does not arrive, check spam, junk, promotions, and filtered folders, confirm the address or number is correct, and allow a few minutes before trying again.
- Use the newest reset link and create a genuinely new password. Repeated requests can make it unclear which message or link is current.
Twitch says a password reset may require you to re-add or re-link connected services, including Prime or game accounts used for Drops. See its password-change guidance before resetting if those connections matter to you.
If you use Google, Apple, or Amazon sign-in
Make sure you are signed into the intended provider account and complete any verification that provider requests. If the Twitch account also has a username-and-password login, try that route. An email address may be associated with another Twitch account, and the wrong provider account can look like a Twitch login failure. Twitch’s account-creation guidance describes social-login and duplicate-email complications. Do not create a replacement account as a first fix; it can separate you from your existing follows, subscriptions, channel history, and creator tools.
Fix missing email, SMS, or authenticator codes
If you reach a code prompt, treat it as a verification issue rather than repeatedly changing your password.

- For an email code, check the correct inbox and spam or junk folders; search for Twitch messages, including mail from
[email protected]. - For SMS, confirm the phone number and country code and make sure the phone can receive ordinary text messages. Twitch says VoIP services such as Google Voice may not work for SMS verification.
- Wait at least 60 seconds between relevant code requests, as Twitch advises, and use Resend code only after the wait. Delivery can be delayed, and repeated requests may trigger rate limiting.
- For an authenticator prompt, enter the current six-digit code from your authenticator app. Set the device’s date and time to update automatically; an incorrect clock can disrupt time-based codes.
- Use saved backup codes if you have them. Do not share a code or backup code with anyone claiming to help.

Twitch says an Authy account is automatically created for users who enable 2FA, even if they use another authenticator app. If you have lost access to the phone or authenticator, Twitch directs users through Authy’s phone-change process; its guide estimates 24–48 business hours, not an instant bypass. Do not pay a recovery service or attempt to bypass 2FA.

You can still sign in
While logged in, open Twitch Security settings to update your email address or phone number and verify the new contact method.
You cannot sign in but still have a recovery method
Use the verified email or phone associated with the account for password recovery. If the account has 2FA, use its authenticator app or saved backup codes. If a reset message does not arrive, check whether you are using the right account identifier and whether the associated email account is still active.

You have lost both email and phone access
Try your authenticator app or backup codes. If neither is available, contact Twitch Support through its official account or login help route. Be prepared to provide enough information to establish ownership; knowing a username alone may not be sufficient, and recovery is not guaranteed.
If a phone number is reported as linked elsewhere, Twitch’s account-access guide covers phone-number conflicts. It also notes that deleting an account can take 90 days, so deleting an old account does not immediately free its number.
Troubleshoot the Twitch app, TV, or console
If the website works but the Twitch app does not, test account access on a phone or computer before changing the password. A failure limited to one platform may be caused by the app’s local login state or the device, not the account.

- Force-close and reopen the app, update it through the device’s official app store, and restart the device fully.
- On Android, clear Twitch’s app cache first; clearing app storage removes the local login state and should be a later step.
- On iOS, restart first, then consider offloading or reinstalling the app if the problem remains.
- On a TV or console, update both the Twitch app and system software. Sign out and back in if available; reinstall only if simpler steps fail.
- Set the device date, time, and time zone to update automatically.
Menu names and available controls differ across Android and iOS releases, consoles, TV manufacturers, and Twitch app versions. Keep using the web version temporarily if it works while you troubleshoot the app.
Check network, VPN, and repeated-attempt problems
Try network changes after the status, browser, and account checks. Temporarily turn off a VPN or proxy, then compare your usual connection with a phone hotspot. If Twitch works on the hotspot but not home Wi-Fi, that comparison points toward a home-network filter, DNS or ISP routing issue, router setting, or IP-specific throttling; it does not identify which one.
- Restart your router and check whether security software or a network filter blocks Twitch authentication.
- Try without VPN or proxy tools. If the issue is confined to one network, a different DNS provider can be a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed fix. Record the original DNS settings so you can restore them; DNS changes will not correct a wrong password or an account restriction.
- Stop rapid retries: close duplicate Twitch tabs, use one clean session, and avoid rapidly switching among devices, browsers, and VPN endpoints. Twitch does not publish one universal wait time for this generic error, so do not assume a fixed lockout duration.
Contact Twitch Support with useful details
If the status page shows no relevant incident and the clean-session, recovery, and device/network checks do not resolve the problem, use Twitch’s official account-access guide to reach support. Include:

- Your Twitch username and the account email or phone through the private support form, not in a public post.
- The exact error text, when it appears, and the approximate time and time zone.
- Whether the failure occurs on web, mobile, TV, console, or every platform; include browser or app version where known.
- Whether a password-reset message arrives, whether a code prompt appears, and which recovery methods you can still access.
- The browser, device, and network tests you have already tried.
Use Twitch’s own site and support pages rather than phone numbers or recovery links in unsolicited search results, comments, or messages. Twitch warns that you should never share your password, including with someone claiming to be Twitch staff: Twitch Security. Do not provide a password, verification or backup code, or remote access to your device to a supposed helper.
