If a Prime Video download disappears, first check whether the title is still available on your account. If it is, the problem is probably with the app, device, storage location, or download limit; if it is not, a catalog change, expired rental, subscription lapse, or account mismatch may be responsible. Check availability and entitlement before deleting the download or reinstalling the app, since either can cost you the local copy.
Prime Video downloads are temporary offline copies controlled by the app, not permanent video files. A title can vanish from Downloads even though you still have the right to stream it, and a title that remains listed may no longer be playable offline. Use the checks below to distinguish a lost local download from an expired or unavailable title.
Start here: is the title still on your account?
- Connect to the internet and open Prime Video.
- Search for the title. Check whether its page still offers Download, or whether it now says Expired, Unavailable, or asks you to rent or buy it.
- Confirm you are signed into the Amazon account that originally rented or purchased the title, or that holds the relevant Prime Video or channel subscription.
- If it was purchased or rented, check Amazon’s digital order history. On the Amazon website, the usual route is Account & Lists → Your Orders; filter for digital orders. Labels can differ by app, browser, and region.
- Check the relevant subscription’s status. A Prime membership, standalone Prime Video subscription, trial, or channel add-on may have ended.
If the title is still available and you have the right to watch it, continue with the device and app checks below. If it is unavailable everywhere, deleting app data or changing storage settings will not restore its rights.

Why a Prime Video download can disappear
The title left the subscription catalog
A download of a title included with Prime is not a promise that it will remain available indefinitely. Amazon says downloaded subscription content can be removed when the title’s availability ends. If the title has left the catalog, you may no longer be able to stream or download it through that subscription. Check the title page; a rental or purchase option may be available instead. Amazon’s download guidance explains that availability affects downloaded subscription content.

The rental or offline viewing period ended
Amazon generally describes a window of up to 30 days to start watching a downloaded title and generally 48 hours to finish once playback begins. The exact terms for the title and region control, so check the title page and applicable terms rather than treating those periods as universal. Downloading again does not restart an expired rental. Your subscription or account changed
Subscription titles depend on the subscription that provides them. If Prime, Prime Video, a trial, or a channel add-on ended, its titles may stop being available. A profile change alone is not necessarily an account change, but signing into a different Amazon account can make its library and downloads appear missing. For a purchased title, verify the account and digital order before assuming the purchase has vanished.

The local app copy was lost or became unusable
App updates, signing out, reinstalling, damaged app data, or a storage location that is no longer available can make a local download disappear or fail to play. The underlying entitlement may still be intact. If the title page still offers a download, a fresh download is usually the practical fix.

A storage location or download limit caused a problem
Android and Windows apps allow a download save location to be chosen. If a removable card or drive is disconnected or unavailable, the app may not be able to find its local copy. Amazon advises against saving downloads to USB-connected drives. Prime Video also restricts how many devices can hold a given title and applies an account-wide download maximum. A two-device limit is common for eligible subscription titles, but limits can vary by content type and location; check Amazon’s current usage rules for your case.

Travel or a network privacy tool interfered with a check
Catalog rights and availability can vary by location. A VPN, proxy, or network-level privacy service can also interfere with authentication or regional checks. Neither is necessarily the cause, but temporarily disabling one while troubleshooting can help isolate the issue. Offline mode cannot extend a rental period or restore a title that has lost its license.
Fix a title that is still available
- Open the right download view. Find the equivalent of Downloads or On Device in your version of the app. Amazon documents Profile → Downloads on Android and Fire devices and Library → Refine → On Device on iPhone and iPad; labels can change between app versions. If the title appears but cannot play offline, do not assume its local copy is healthy.
- Check storage and location. Make sure there is enough free space for the title; its size varies with duration, resolution, audio, and quality settings. On Android or Windows, check the app’s selected download location. For a test, switch to internal storage, and avoid moving, renaming, or editing download folders yourself.
- Reconnect and refresh the app. Use a stable network, close Prime Video completely, reopen it, and check for app updates. Restart the device and install pending operating-system updates. If the app provides an Android Clear cache option, you can try it; avoid Clear storage/data initially because it may remove sign-in information and downloads.
- Check date and time. Set the device’s date, time, and time zone to automatic. A wrong clock can interfere with authentication and offline checks, particularly after long periods offline, travel, a drained battery, or computer sleep. Amazon includes date/time, app and device updates, and restarting among its playback troubleshooting steps.
- Temporarily disable a VPN or proxy. Reconnect without it and check whether the title and download behave normally. This is a diagnostic step, not proof that a VPN caused the disappearance.
- Delete and redownload only after confirming eligibility. Remove the affected item from the app’s Downloads area, close and reopen Prime Video, then download it again from the title page. For a series, test one episode before attempting a whole season. Start playback briefly while online before relying on it offline.
- Reinstall only if simpler steps fail. Confirm you know the sign-in credentials first. Uninstalling and reinstalling normally removes local downloads, so you will need to download them again. Do not use a factory reset as a first-line fix; it removes downloaded content from apps on the device.
Amazon’s download instructions describe downloads through supported apps, including movies from their detail pages and individual TV episodes from their episode lists. Its listed download platforms include Fire tablets, iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows 10/11. Not every title is downloadable, and browser, smart-TV, Roku, and Fire TV apps should not be assumed to support storing downloads.

Device-specific checks
- Android: Look for Profile → Downloads or its current equivalent. Check free space and the chosen save location; test with internal storage rather than removable or USB-connected storage. In Android app settings, clearing cache is less disruptive than clearing storage/data, but menu names vary by manufacturer and OS.
- iPhone or iPad: Check Library → Refine → On Device or the current Downloads view. Check device storage. Avoid deleting the app until you are ready to recreate its local downloads.
- Fire tablet: Verify the tablet is registered to the account you expect, check storage, restart, and install available system updates. Very old devices may not support current download features; consult the usage rules for device eligibility.
- Windows 10/11 or macOS: Make sure you are using the Prime Video app, not just a browser. Check the app’s chosen save location and test on internal storage rather than a USB or removable drive. Keep the computer awake during a test download and its first offline playback. Do not copy or move encrypted app download files manually.
Recovering a purchased movie or episode
A missing item in Downloads is not proof that the purchase disappeared: the local download and the account’s purchase entitlement are separate. Sign into the Amazon account used to buy it, check Digital Orders, and look in the Prime Video library or Purchases & Rentals area. If the order is valid and the title remains available, try streaming or downloading it again from the title page. Amazon’s terms also reserve the possibility that purchased digital content can become unavailable because of licensing restrictions or other reasons, so a purchase should not be described as an unrestricted permanent file. If the order is valid but you cannot access the title on the account, contact Amazon rather than repeatedly reinstalling the app. For account checks and digital orders, Amazon’s guidance also recommends verifying the account used for the purchase; see this Amazon discussion of missing purchased movies.

If Prime Video says you reached a download limit
Downloads are device-specific, and there is no universal control that removes every local download from every device at once. If possible, open Prime Video on an older phone, tablet, or computer and delete the title there. If that device is unavailable, sign it out or remove it from your Amazon account where possible; then retry. If the restriction persists, contact support. Limits differ by region and content, so do not rely on a single device count for every title.
Before traveling
- Download only titles currently marked as downloadable, and check whether a title has an upcoming availability change if that information is shown.
- Test playback while online, then do a brief offline test before leaving.
- Keep Prime Video installed, stay signed in, and set the device clock to automatic.
- Leave adequate storage and use internal storage for a reliability test, particularly on Android and Windows.
- Download more than one option if a particular title is essential. These steps reduce surprises but cannot override an expired rental, a subscription ending, or a catalog-rights change.
When to contact Amazon
Use Prime Video Help if a valid purchase is missing, an available title cannot be streamed or redownloaded after reinstalling, several titles vanished after an account change, a device/license error persists, or a download-limit warning remains after removing known copies. Include:
