If HBO Max will not load on your computer, open HBOMax.com in a private window, then try a second supported browser. Those quick tests help show whether the cause is a browser setting, an extension, or something broader. Official US support pages currently use the HBO Max name; the steps below focus on the website, not problems with a TV or mobile app.
First, work out where the problem is
“Not working” can mean a blank page, an endless spinner, a sign-in loop, or video that will not play. Test in this order before changing settings or deleting browser data:
- Open another website. If that also fails, check your internet connection first.
- Open HBOMax.com in a private window: Incognito in Chrome, InPrivate in Edge, or a Private Window in Firefox or Safari.
- If it still fails, try another supported browser. HBO Max recommends the latest version of Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge for Windows, or Safari.
- Try another device on the same network. If possible, test a different network, such as a phone hotspot; mobile-data limits or charges may apply.
- Write down the exact error wording and any code shown.
If the site works in a private window, a cookie, extension, ad blocker, or browser setting is a likely cause. If it works in another browser, focus on the original browser. If it fails across browsers, devices, and networks, an account, regional-access, DNS, ISP, or service-side problem becomes more plausible. These tests narrow the possibilities; they do not prove that HBO Max is down. The support instructions do not provide a live outage confirmation, so do not assume every failure is a widespread outage.

- Refresh the page. Close the HBO Max tab, reopen HBOMax.com, and try again.
- Close and relaunch the browser. If an update is waiting to finish, relaunching may be necessary.
- Update the browser. Use its About or update page, install any available update, and relaunch.
- Test a private window. If the site works there, continue with the extension and cookie checks below.
- Temporarily disable extensions and ad blockers. Privacy, script-blocking, and ad-blocking tools can interfere with site elements. If disabling them fixes the issue, turn them back on one at a time to identify the cause; do not leave security protections disabled as a permanent fix.
- Allow third-party cookies. Cookie restrictions can disrupt sign-in or page loading. You can test this temporarily, then adjust the setting or site exception that caused the problem.
- Remove only HBO Max site data. Search your browser’s site-data or cookies settings for
hbomax.comand, if present,max.com. Remove that service’s cookies and cached files, then close and reopen the browser and sign in again. This can sign you out and remove saved site preferences, but it does not delete your account or subscription. - Sign out and restart the computer. Reopen the browser, sign in, and test again.
- Try another supported browser. This is a useful workaround and diagnostic, especially if the original browser is managed by an employer or school.
- Check the network and restart network equipment only if the problem appears across browsers or devices. See the buffering section for the restart sequence.
A full browser-data wipe is more disruptive and usually should not be the first move. If clearing only HBO Max data does not help, the browser’s own support instructions can guide you through a broader cache clear.

Browser-specific checks
Google Chrome
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Update Google Chrome if it appears; relaunch Chrome.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose New Incognito Window, then visit HBOMax.com and sign in.
- If Incognito works, check extensions, third-party-cookie settings, and HBO Max site data in the regular window.
- If the problem remains, test Firefox, Edge, or Safari.
A browser controlled by an employer or school may have policies that you cannot change yourself. In that case, test a personal browser or ask the administrator rather than trying to bypass managed settings.
Microsoft Edge
- Select the three-dot menu, then go to Settings > About Microsoft Edge. Install an available update and relaunch.
- Open an InPrivate window and test HBOMax.com.
- If it works there, check extensions and remove the service’s cookies and cached files. Edge’s data-clear path is Menu > History > Clear browsing data; choose All time, select Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files, then select Clear now. This clears data beyond HBO Max, so try removing only the site’s data first when that option is available.
Firefox
- Open the menu, choose Settings, and search for “update” to check for updates.
- Open a Private Window and test the site.
- If the private window works, check add-ons and remove HBO Max cookies and cached files before trying a broader cache clear.
Safari
- Update macOS; Safari updates arrive with macOS updates.
- Choose File > New Private Window and test HBOMax.com.
- If it works privately, check Safari extensions and clear the service’s cookies or website data.
The website opens, but video will not play
Page access and playback are separate problems. If you can sign in but a video fails, try these checks:

- Test another title. If only one title fails, the issue may be specific to that video rather than the whole service.
- Update the browser, then test a private window or another supported browser.
- Temporarily disable extensions and ad blockers and allow third-party cookies.
- If you use a VPN or proxy, disconnect it, close and reopen the browser, and test again. Check whether a work, school, hotel, or public network routes traffic through a VPN or proxy.
- Try another device, and note whether the same title plays there.
- If you see an “Are you using a VPN?” message, follow HBO Max’s VPN troubleshooting guidance. A VPN can trigger a location or connection check, but that message alone does not establish why the connection was flagged.
Do not use a VPN to try to bypass geographic restrictions. If you are not using one and the warning persists, test an ordinary home or mobile connection and contact support with the exact message.
HBO Max’s cited website guidance says playback at HBOMax.com is limited to up to 720p; it also notes that displays above 720p may have full-screen or clipping issues in some circumstances. This is a website-specific limitation in that guidance, not a statement about every HBO Max app or TV device. If the picture is cropped or full screen behaves oddly, test windowed playback and another browser before assuming the monitor or graphics hardware is faulty.

Buffering, freezing, or poor quality
First distinguish a slow stream from a page that will not open. HBO Max lists 5 Mbps download speed as the minimum for HD streaming. Its cited guidance recommends 50+ Mbps for 4K on supported TV devices; that is not a requirement just to open the website, and it should not be treated as a desktop-web 4K promise. - Update the browser and computer, then test another browser or device.
- Run a speed test and reduce other activity using the connection, such as large downloads or other simultaneous streams.
- If several devices are affected, restart the computer and network equipment. Turn off the computer, unplug the modem and router, and wait 30 seconds. Reconnect the modem and allow about one minute for internet service to return; reconnect the router, turn the computer back on, and test HBO Max.
- If the connection remains slow or unstable on other sites and devices, contact your internet provider. If only HBO Max fails, keep investigating the browser, account, or service instead.
Sign-in loops and provider accounts
If the page loads but sign-in keeps returning to the login screen, verify that you are using the email address associated with the account. Try a private window or another supported browser, allow cookies, and clear HBO Max site data. If needed, reset the password; if the reset email does not arrive, check spam or junk and confirm the address. HBO Max’s sign-in troubleshooting also recommends updating the browser, trying another browser, clearing service cookies, and clearing the browser cache if necessary.

If you get HBO Max through an internet, mobile, or TV provider, the provider may control subscription billing or authentication. Sign in to the provider’s own website first, then return to HBO Max and complete the account connection. HBO Max says its support team cannot access your provider sign-in information; see its provider sign-in guidance.

For other codes, HBO Max maintains a general error-message and code guide. Record the exact wording rather than relying on a paraphrase.
When to stop troubleshooting and contact support
Contact HBO Max support when the same error persists in multiple supported browsers and devices, especially after testing another network. Repeatedly clearing data is unlikely to help once those tests point beyond a single browser. Give support:
- the exact on-screen message and error code;
- your browser and version, operating system, and computer type;
- whether a private window or another browser worked;
- whether another device or network worked;
- whether a VPN, proxy, ad blocker, or managed work/school network was involved; and
- whether the failure affects sign-in, every video, or only one title.
If every site is slow or unreachable, contact your ISP. If the account is billed through a provider and the provider sign-in or subscription is the issue, contact that provider. Use the official HBO Max help center for the current support route.

Avoid risky or unnecessary fixes
- Do not download unofficial “HBO Max repair” tools or install unofficial streaming apps.
- Do not permanently disable security software or browser protections; use temporary tests and restore settings afterward.
- Do not reset the account or erase all browser data before checking private browsing and site-specific cookies.
- Do not assume that a single failure proves HBO Max is down—or that a website problem can be fixed by changing your subscription.
