Spotify clarified on April 30, 2025, that using a VPN does not by itself result in an account ban. That is not a promise that Spotify will work normally through a VPN: the company says VPNs can affect performance, and its support guidance lists VPN use as a possible reason for a blocked request.
What Spotify clarified about VPNs
The clarification followed reports that users had received support guidance claiming VPN use could lead to a ban. A Spotify spokesperson told Android Authority on April 30, 2025 that the ban information was incorrect: a VPN may affect performance, but VPN use does not itself result in a ban. The spokesperson also said Spotify had updated its relevant support teams.
This was a statement to a publication, not a prominently published Spotify newsroom announcement. Its scope matters: it addresses VPN use on its own, not every possible reason an account could be restricted.

Not automatically banned does not mean officially supported
Spotify’s support page says VPN use can trigger the message, “For your protection, we’re unable to process your request at the moment,” and advises turning the VPN off. A Spotify Community moderator likewise said in 2023 that VPNs are not officially supported and that Spotify cannot guarantee normal operation while one is active. The distinction is straightforward: unsupported means there is no promise of compatibility; a blocked request means Spotify rejected a particular action; neither outcome, by itself, proves the account has been terminated.

Spotify’s abuse-detection guidance describes a request that cannot be processed, while its Community guidance discusses possible playback and security problems. Those are different from an account suspension under the Terms.
Why Spotify may fail while a VPN is on
A VPN routes traffic through an exit server, so Spotify may receive a connection that appears to come from a different IP address or country. A new or shared exit IP, repeated changes in apparent location, or a mismatch with account context can coincide with rejected requests or security checks. Spotify’s public support material confirms VPNs can be associated with blocked requests; it does not describe every signal its systems use.

- Blocked login or request: The anti-abuse message may appear even though the account has not been banned.
- Verification or password reset: Access from unfamiliar locations can prompt security checks. Spotify Community guidance mentions these possibilities, but they are not automatic consequences of every VPN connection.
- Playback trouble: A VPN server, protocol, or network interaction may interfere with playback.
- Different catalog or unavailable tracks: A connection that appears to be in another country can expose a different regional catalog; Spotify says country settings affect catalog availability.
Spotify’s country and region guidance explains that catalog availability and pricing can vary by country. That is useful context, but the available statements do not establish that Spotify bans ordinary VPN users as a licensing-enforcement measure.

Using a VPN for privacy while remaining in the country associated with your Spotify account is the situation covered by Spotify’s no-automatic-ban clarification. It still may not work reliably, and Spotify does not officially support the connection.

Using a VPN to appear to live in another country, obtain a cheaper subscription, or access a country-specific catalog raises a separate issue. Spotify’s U.S. Terms of Use, last updated August 26, 2025, say an account must be in the user’s country of residence and that users should access the version offered there. The Terms also reserve Spotify’s ability to suspend access if it believes the Terms have been breached. This means a regional workaround could create account or subscription problems; it does not establish that every user who tries one will be banned.

- Free: Change the country or region in Edit profile. The new country appears only when Spotify detects that you are actually there.
- Travel: Spotify’s regional playing abroad guidance says free accounts can be used in another country for up to 14 days before account settings need to be changed. Treat that as the limit stated in that regional guidance, not as a universal rule for every market or plan.
What to do if Spotify stops working over a VPN
- Turn off the VPN temporarily. For the specific blocked-request message, Spotify’s support instructions say to disable the VPN and retry.
- Retry the action that failed. Test login, browsing, or playback again. If it works without the VPN, the VPN connection or exit IP is a likely factor, not proof of a ban.
- Update Spotify and the VPN app. Spotify Community guidance recommends checking that both are current.
- If you need the VPN for other traffic, try split tunneling or app allowlisting. Exclude Spotify from the VPN tunnel if your VPN offers that feature. Availability and behavior depend on the VPN and platform.
- Use another VPN server only as a diagnostic test. A different exit IP may behave differently, but switching servers is not a guaranteed fix.
- Check other network layers. A proxy, DNS filter, firewall, or managed workplace network may also interfere.
- If the failure continues with the VPN off, use Spotify’s normal account-recovery or playback troubleshooting options. If Spotify shows a security prompt, follow it; do not assume the prompt is a ban.
How to tell a block from an account ban
Start with the exact message and the result of retrying with the VPN disabled. A temporary inability to process a request, a verification challenge, a missing track, or a playback failure is not the same thing as a disabled account. Spotify’s support article covers blocked requests; its Terms separately address suspension when Spotify believes a user has breached the agreement. If the account remains inaccessible after the VPN is off and normal recovery steps fail, contact Spotify support rather than treating a connection error as confirmation of a ban.

A VPN changes the apparent public IP address, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed way to conceal account country. Spotify does not publicly describe every detection signal, so there is no reliable basis to claim exactly how it identifies a location mismatch or that a VPN can override account, payment, or regional rules.
