Disney+ Is Only Available in Certain Regions: How to Fix Error 73

If Disney+ says it is only available in certain regions, the message usually points to Error Code 73. Disney says this can mean either that the service is not offered where you are or that it has detected a VPN or IP anonymizer. First check availability in your current country; if Disney+ is supported there, turn off location-masking tools, restart the app and test another network. Disney’s Error 73 guidance gives those core checks.

What “only available in certain regions” means

The message is not always evidence of a Disney+ outage. It can describe several different problems, and the right fix depends on whether the whole service is blocked or just one title.

  • Service unavailable: Disney+ is not officially offered in the country where you are trying to watch. Changing device settings does not create official availability.
  • Location misidentified: Disney+ is offered locally, but the public IP address or network appears to be in another country.
  • VPN or proxy detected: A VPN, proxy, Smart DNS, corporate gateway, or similar tool may mask or route your connection in a way Disney+ rejects.
  • Title restriction: The service works, but a film, episode, or live event is not licensed for your current location.
  • Travel: A subscriber abroad may see a different local catalog from the one at home.

Disney confirms that catalog availability can vary by country and current location. Check the current Disney+ availability information for the country you are physically in. A local service carrying Disney-owned content, Hulu, ESPN, Disney+ Hotstar, or a telecom bundle is not automatically the same service or catalog as Disney+.

What Error Code 73 means

Disney’s documented wording is “Error Code 73: This content isn’t available to watch in your current location.” It may appear when opening the service or trying to play content. Disney identifies two principal causes: access from a country or region where Disney+ is unavailable, or use of a VPN or IP anonymizer. See Disney’s Error 73 help page.

Fix Error 73 in order

  1. Confirm availability where you are now. Use Disney’s availability page and check your present country, not only the country where you bought the subscription. If the service is not officially offered there, there is no ordinary app or network setting that legitimately enables it.
  2. Turn off location-masking tools. Disable consumer VPN apps and browser extensions, proxy settings, Smart DNS or “unblocker” features, router-level VPNs, and any corporate or school gateway that routes traffic through another country. Some privacy relay features may also mask your public IP. Disney’s advice is to disable a VPN or IP anonymizer; not every privacy tool causes the error, but Disney’s view of the connection matters.
  3. Fully close and reopen Disney+. Force-close the app or close the browser tab, disconnect and reconnect to your network, then launch Disney+ again and test a title that should be available locally.
  4. Restart the device. Power down the TV, streaming stick, console, phone, or computer, wait briefly, then start it and relaunch Disney+. Disney recommends restarting the device and app for Error 73.
  5. Test the internet connection. Use the device’s network test or open another reliable site. A failed general connection needs to be fixed before Disney+ can be diagnosed.
  6. Try a different network. Test the same account on the same device using ordinary mobile data or another home connection. If it works there, the original network, router, DNS filtering, ISP routing, or public IP geolocation is a likely factor. If it fails on every network, continue the checks and consider support.
  7. Update the app and device software. Install available Disney+ app, browser, and device operating-system updates. This is a practical diagnostic step; an update is not a guaranteed Error 73 fix.
  8. Review region and network settings. Check the device region and time zone, app-store country, billing profile, router configuration, and DNS or filtering settings. Store-country changes may affect app availability, but do not override Disney+ availability rules and can complicate payment, subscriptions, and updates. Do not create a false country profile to bypass regional restrictions.
  9. Contact Disney+ Support if it persists. If your country is supported, masking tools are off, and the issue remains after restarting and testing another network, use Disney’s Error 73 support route.

Other titles play but one film or event does not Local catalog rights, event restrictions, or profile settings Check the title’s local availability and the profile’s age restrictions.

If Disney+ thinks you are in the wrong country

When the error occurs only on one network, the problem may be the network’s public IP address rather than the device’s GPS or account country. ISPs sometimes assign or route addresses whose location databases are inaccurate; hotels, offices, schools, and public Wi-Fi can also use unusual routing.

  • Compare the same device on mobile data and on the affected Wi-Fi.
  • Restart the modem and router, then reconnect without a VPN, proxy, or Smart DNS service.
  • If the issue is limited to a work, school, hotel, or public network, try a normal home or mobile connection.
  • If the ISP connection consistently appears to be in the wrong country, ask the ISP to investigate the public IP’s geolocation.
  • DNS changes are not a universal fix: DNS may affect filtering or routing, but changing DNS does not necessarily change the public IP location Disney uses.

Using Disney+ while traveling

Disney says subscribers traveling abroad can stream content available in the country or region they are visiting, so the catalog may differ from home. Disney may ask you to confirm that you are away from home. It also recommends downloading content before travel; downloads are subject to the app, device, subscription, expiry, and content limits that apply to the title. • Short trip: Try the service normally with VPNs and proxies off.
  • Limited connectivity: Download eligible titles before leaving, while you still have a working connection.
  • Long-term move: Expect local differences in catalog, language options, plans, and billing. Check the current rules and available plans for the new country.

If only one movie, episode, or live event is unavailable

If other Disney+ content plays normally, treat the problem as title-specific before troubleshooting the whole service. Streaming rights and live-event rights can differ by market, and a profile’s age settings can hide some content. Disney notes that titles and live events may be unavailable in a current location; its content availability help article discusses missing content.

  • Try another title to see whether playback works generally.
  • Check whether the missing item is listed in your country’s catalog.
  • Review the profile’s content-rating settings if the title is absent only for one profile.
  • For a live event, check whether it is offered in your location.

Why a VPN is not the recommended fix

Disney’s Error 73 instructions tell users to disable VPNs and IP anonymizers, not use them to change the apparent country. Disney’s subscriber agreement says content can be limited by location and includes restrictions on circumventing service protections or disguising location. A VPN is therefore neither an official nor a reliable fix: Disney may reject the connection, and app, payment, or account-country issues can remain.
