The March 3, 2015, Droid Life post was a brief reaction to two new Google Android commercials: one about people of different ages coming together, and another described as an “Androidify selfie dunk.” The post’s enthusiastic tone reflected its author’s response and reader messages—not a measured survey of public opinion. The ads were part of a much larger campaign built around one idea: “be together. not the same.”

What the March 2015 post covered

Droid Life published “The New ‘Be Together. Not the Same.’ Android Commercials Just Keep Getting Better” on March 3, 2015. It was a short news-and-reaction item with an embedded video, not a comprehensive account of the campaign. The writer said readers had been responding enthusiastically and described two creative directions: a spot showing young and old people coming together to enjoy life, and a comic concept the post called an “Androidify selfie dunk.”

One small but useful correction appeared in the post itself: these were Google’s commercials, not Droid Life’s. The people-focused spot is best described at the level the post provides; it does not supply enough detail to reconstruct its scenes. Likewise, “selfie dunk” identifies the second spot’s premise as Droid Life framed it, but is not a basis for guessing its cast, soundtrack, runtime, or exact basketball action.

A campaign about belonging through difference

Google introduced the “be together. not the same.” campaign in fall 2014, during the Android Lollipop era. Creative lead Natalie Dennis’s campaign portfolio records a mix of formats: a print manifesto, a 7-minute-34-second skippable YouTube pre-roll, and seven animated commercials. The portfolio names several spots, including “And Skip,” “Slightly Longer Roadtrip,” “Block Party,” and “Garage Band”; it does not display a complete list of all seven animated commercials.

The slogan turned Android’s range of manufacturers, devices, users, and experiences into a brand story about people who belong together without being identical. That is a positioning idea, not a technical guarantee. Android phones could differ in hardware, manufacturer customizations, interfaces, and update timing. “Together” did not mean that every device behaved the same way or that the slogan itself established interoperability.

Why “Friends Furever” became the campaign’s clearest example

In February 2015, Google released six more ads featuring unlikely animal friendships. The best-known, “Friends Furever,” paired images such as dogs with elephants, monkeys with horses, and cats with dogs, ending on the campaign line. Contemporary coverage connected the ad’s animal pairings to Android’s variety and read them as a response to the platform’s fragmentation.

  • PERFORMANCE: Lightning-fast 5G connectivity paired with a powerful processor and RAM Boost for smooth multitasking.
  • BATTERY LIFE: Long-lasting 5000mAh battery with TurboPower charging technology delivers hours of power in minutes.

That is the creative mechanism: an abstract platform idea becomes a visual relationship. Unexpected pairings make difference instantly legible; affection and humor make it feel inviting rather than technical or defensive. The spot does not demonstrate that Android devices work identically. It makes diversity emotionally appealing. Nor does its popularity in technology coverage prove that it produced a sales lift or broad, measured brand improvement.

From animals to people, characters, and public screens

The March post’s two newer commercials extended the same general message in different directions. One used people of different ages, according to Droid Life’s description. The other was presented as an Androidify selfie-dunk joke. These concepts sit alongside the campaign’s animated spots rather than replacing them; the portfolio documents a wider body of work than the pair highlighted in the post.

The campaign also moved beyond conventional ads. In December 2014, Google promoted an interactive Times Square experience in which visitors created Androidified characters that appeared on a large public billboard and could take part in a screen-based game. Lisa Gevelber’s account of the activation describes a format that made participation part of the message: people did not just watch different characters together, they helped put them on display.

Android partners also promoted the campaign at CES 2015, and Google continued extending it into late 2015 and 2016. Later work included “finger people,” “Monotone,” and a rock-paper-scissors story. In the latter, the familiar rivals cooperate; TIME interpreted the spot as a playful contrast with Apple’s more uniform ecosystem.

The Apple subtext—and the trade-off

Some contemporary commentators understood “be together. not the same.” as an implicit jab at Apple’s more controlled hardware-and-software approach. That is a plausible reading of the contrast, but it should remain attributed commentary rather than be treated as a confirmed statement of Google’s intent.

The contrast also exposes the campaign’s central tension. Android’s variety could mean more choice across devices and manufacturers; it could also mean a less consistent experience, including differences in interfaces and update schedules. The campaign celebrates the first side and largely leaves the second outside the frame. That omission is normal for brand advertising, but it matters when interpreting the slogan: it was an invitation to see difference as a strength, not a full account of the platform’s trade-offs.

What the commercials achieved—and what cannot be concluded

As creative work, the campaign had several strengths. Its core idea was understandable without a technical history of Android. Animals, people, and animated characters gave it a recognizable visual language, while the mix of print, long-form video, short spots, and interactive out-of-home work repeated the message in different settings. Humor and affection also let the ads make a competitive contrast without turning every spot into a direct product comparison.

But a memorable commercial is not evidence of product superiority or business impact. The available reporting documents the campaign’s formats, chronology, and contemporary reactions; it does not provide verified figures for sales lift, market-share changes caused by the ads, brand-awareness gains, return on ad spend, or YouTube completion rates. Droid Life’s report of enthusiastic emails is evidence of what its writer heard, not a representative measure of viewers.

The 2015 post’s title captures the appeal of the creative run, but the campaign’s most durable achievement was broader than any single animal pairing or selfie joke. It made Android’s structural variety feel like a social idea: people—and, by extension, devices—could share a platform without having to be the same.
