YouTube Music now offers several ways for fans to follow artists more closely: artist Community feeds, listening badges and a public audience estimate for qualifying artist channels. These tools are not one single fan-club subscription, and not all require Premium. Ask Music, an AI-powered discovery tool, is a related extra that does require a paid membership.
What YouTube Music’s fan features do

YouTube’s current Help pages document these features, but do not establish that they all launched together in one update. “Superfan” is a useful description of the audience they may appeal to, not a separate YouTube Music membership tier.

Fan Communities bring artist posts into the music app
To look for a community, open an artist page in the YouTube Music mobile app and check the Community card in the Spotlight carousel. Depending on the artist’s feed, fans can read updates, view photos, react to posts and comments, comment, vote in polls, answer quizzes, share posts and filter the feed to show artist posts only.
There is an important two-app wrinkle: YouTube Music lets you interact with existing community posts, but you cannot create a new post there. To manage notifications, open the artist’s channel in the main YouTube app, tap the bell and set your notification preference. Shared music videos can play inside YouTube Music; non-music videos such as Shorts or vlogs open in YouTube.

If the Community card is missing, the artist may not have a community available, or another timely item—such as a new album—may be occupying the Spotlight carousel. The feature is a way to bring more artist activity alongside listening, not a guarantee that every artist has a feed.

Badges recognize listening milestones—and start private
Badges reflect listening activity. One example is recognition as an artist’s top listener, but they should not be mistaken for a universal public leaderboard. You can find badges in the Badges tab in YouTube Music or the You tab in YouTube. They are private by default; open a badge if you want to share it or delete it.

To turn the feature off, go to Settings > Privacy > Earn badges. Badges are currently limited to mobile devices and tablets, and may not be available for accounts that primarily listen to made-for-kids music.

Monthly Audience is broader than a listener count
Monthly Audience is a public metric shown on eligible artist channels. It estimates unique users who viewed or listened to an artist’s content during the previous 28 days and updates daily. Its scope is broader than music streams: it can include artist- or label-uploaded videos and Shorts, collaborations featuring the artist’s music, fan-uploaded videos using that music, and non-music content from the artist’s channel. The estimate draws on YouTube, YouTube Music and YouTube Kids.
To qualify, a channel needs an Official Artist Channel, more than 7,500 subscribers and more than 50,000 monthly listeners. Channels that do not meet those thresholds continue to show subscriber count only.

It is also not the same as a streaming service’s monthly-listener figure or a private artist analytics dashboard.

Ask Music turns prompts into mixes
Ask Music is an adjacent discovery feature rather than a fan-community tool. Describe what you want in text or by voice—a mood, activity, genre or creator, for example—and it can produce a personalized music mix. It can also recommend podcast shows and episodes. A result may be labeled “Mix created by AI.”
To try it, open YouTube Music on a supported mobile device and look on Home for What are you in the mood for?, then tap Ask any way you like. You can also start from search and use the Ask Music control if it appears. Enter or speak a prompt, play the mix and refine your request if needed.
Ask Music currently requires YouTube Premium or YouTube Music Premium, a mobile device and an app set to English or Spanish. The supported markets listed in YouTube’s Help page include the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Mexico and Latin American countries excluding Brazil. Availability can therefore vary by account, country and app setup. Google cautions that AI quality and accuracy may vary; a prompt or result may also be blocked for safety or policy reasons.

No—not for every fan feature. YouTube’s documentation does not say that Fan Communities or Monthly Audience require a listener subscription, and fan badges are available with ad-supported YouTube Music. Ask Music is the feature in this group that currently requires YouTube Premium or YouTube Music Premium.
Premium’s broader music benefits include ad-free music, background play for music, audio-only playback and downloads. YouTube Premium also includes YouTube Music Premium and is relevant if you want ad-free viewing in the main YouTube app too. A Premium subscription does not necessarily remove podcast ads or promotions embedded by creators. Check the current membership details for your market at YouTube Music’s membership comparison.

If a feature is missing
- No Community card: The artist may not have a community feed, or another card may be taking its place in the Spotlight carousel.
- No notifications: Set them from the artist’s channel in the main YouTube app, and check that YouTube notifications are enabled on your device.
- No badge: Check on mobile or tablet; badges may not be available if the account primarily listens to made-for-kids music.
- No Monthly Audience figure: The channel may not be an Official Artist Channel or may not exceed both eligibility thresholds.
- No Ask Music option: Check membership, mobile access, app language and supported-country availability.
For artists, YouTube also has creator-facing Fan and Top fan analytics, but those are not the same as listener badges or Monthly Audience; access is limited to a subset of artists. See YouTube’s artist analytics documentation.
Who will find these features useful?
The clearest benefit is for listeners who follow particular artists closely: communities make updates and fan interaction easier to find beside music, badges offer optional recognition, and Monthly Audience gives a wider—though approximate—view of an eligible artist’s reach. Ask Music may help when you know the mood or activity you want but not the exact playlist to search for.
The experience still spans two apps, artist participation is not universal, and AI-generated recommendations can miss the mark. But the main fan features are not simply paywalled playback extras: free listeners can use badges, and the documentation does not make Premium a condition for communities.
