Google announced five Google TV features on September 23, 2024, and began rolling them out that day. They include a smart-home control panel, AI-made screensavers, a Sports page, Gemini-assisted show overviews and an expanded Freeplay channel guide. The announcement is not a new 2026 update: whether a feature is available now still depends on your device, software, region and the services you use. Most of the five were presented as Google TV platform features, so buying a Google TV Streamer is not automatically necessary.
The five features at a glance
- Google Home panel: Control compatible smart-home devices from the TV.
- AI ambient screensavers: Create idle-screen artwork from prompts or display Google Photos memories.
- Sports page: Find live and upcoming games, highlights and sports recommendations in the For You area.
- Gemini-enhanced overviews: See expanded information about selected movies and shows.
- Freeplay expansion: Browse a redesigned guide for 150 free channels, according to Google’s 2024 announcement.
Google said the rollout would reach Google TV devices over the following weeks. That broad announcement does not guarantee that every television, Chromecast with Google TV, country or software build has every feature. Google TV Streamer launched separately on September 24, 2024, with additional hardware capabilities.
1. Google Home panel: smart-home controls on the TV
The Home panel puts controls for compatible smart-home devices on the television. Google’s examples include lights, thermostats, cameras and doorbell notifications, so you can adjust a room or check who is at the door without opening a phone app. The panel draws on devices set up through Google Home. Google’s announcement describes the feature and its rollout.

Also distinguish the panel from the Google TV Streamer’s smart-home hardware. The Streamer includes Matter support and a built-in Thread border router; an older television or Chromecast may offer a Google Home interface without acting as the same kind of Matter/Thread hub. Those are separate capabilities, not a promise that the panel makes every Google TV a smart-home hub. Google’s Streamer announcement lists its hardware features.
2. AI screensavers and Google Photos
Google added ways to personalize the idle screen: generate artwork from a description, start with suggested prompts, or display selected Google Photos memories. This is an ambient-display feature, not a way to generate video or improve a television’s picture quality, resolution, frame rate or HDR.
It is most useful if you leave the TV showing art or photos when it is idle. If you turn the set off as soon as you finish watching, it may make little difference. AI results can vary, and the prompt-based feature is subject to Google’s safety restrictions. Photos integration may require the right Google account, internet access and supported software. Names and settings can differ across manufacturers and updates.

3. Sports page: a discovery hub, not a sports subscription
The Sports page appears in the For You area and brings together live and upcoming games, commentary, YouTube highlights and personalized recommendations. It is intended to make sports easier to find across services, rather than to provide universal access to every event. See Google’s feature announcement.
Finding a game is not the same as having the right to watch it. A particular event may require a paid streaming service, a local channel, a league or network subscription, or access available only in your region. Check the event card for the service carrying it; the Sports page does not make every game free.
4. Gemini-enhanced overviews: helpful, but not authoritative
For selected movies and shows, Google said Gemini would help provide fuller synopses, audience reviews and season-by-season breakdowns. The aim is to give viewers more context before choosing what to watch. The feature is limited to supported titles and may not appear on every device or in every market. Google’s 2024 announcement describes these overviews.

Treat them as a convenience, not as a definitive episode guide or a substitute for reviews. AI-assisted summaries can be incomplete or wrong, mix up adaptations or similarly titled programs, and reveal plot details. If you want to avoid spoilers, be cautious before opening an expanded overview; check an official listing when season or episode details matter.
These 2024 content overviews are also not the same feature as Gemini for TV, announced in September 2025, a broader conversational experience for supported devices.
5. Freeplay’s 150 channels: what “free” means
Google said Freeplay was expanding to 150 channels and getting a redesigned guide organized by genre and topic. The announcement named additions including Heartland, The FBI Files and ION Plus. “150” refers to Google’s 2024 Freeplay claim; it should not be confused with Google’s later figure of more than 800 free channels across the wider Google TV live-TV ecosystem.

The broader total can include channels surfaced through integrated third-party services such as Tubi, Plex, Haystack News and Pluto TV. Some channels may require an app download or sign-in, and availability varies by service and country. Free channels may also be ad-supported. In other words, “free” means no subscription fee for that channel itself where available—not 150 universally accessible, ad-free channels built into every TV. Usually not just for these five features. Google presented them as Google TV platform updates, while the Streamer is a separate device with additional hardware. A compatible existing television or Chromecast may receive some or all of the features without being replaced; rollout and support vary by model and region.

The Streamer may make sense if you want a newer external device, Ethernet, more storage, a smart-home hub, or its redesigned remote. Google listed a $99.99 launch price in 2024; that is historical launch pricing, not a verified current price. Its Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos support matter only if your TV and audio setup can use those formats. Google’s product announcement details the hardware, while its remote guide explains ways to make the remote beep, including its rear button, a connected Assistant device or the Google Home app.

An upgrade is less compelling if your current Google TV works well and you mainly want the Sports page, screensavers, content overviews or Freeplay. None of those features turns paid streaming or sports services into free access.
How to check for the features
- Connect the Google TV device to the internet and check its settings for system updates. Menu wording varies by manufacturer.
- Confirm that the device is signed into the Google account you intend to use.
- Look through the Home, For You, Live and Ambient or screensaver areas for the relevant feature. Exact placement and labels can vary by model and software version.
- If you use Google Home controls, make sure the relevant devices are configured in the Google Home app; update the app if needed.
- Restart the device after an update. If a feature is still missing, it may not be supported on that model or in that region, or may not have reached the device yet.
The practical takeaway: check your current TV before buying anything. These five features were announced as a platform rollout, while the Streamer’s strongest case is its distinct hardware—especially if you want Ethernet, more storage, Matter/Thread support or its remote features.
