HBO Max error 905 has no publicly documented, definitive meaning from HBO. It has appeared in user reports during playback—often while casting to Chromecast—so the right fix depends on whether it affects one title, casting only, one device, or every device. Start by stopping the cast, force-closing the app, restarting your phone and TV or streaming device, then try another title and play the original directly on the TV if possible.
Try this quick fix first
- Stop casting and force-close HBO Max (or Max, if that is the name shown in your app).
- Restart the phone or tablet and the Chromecast, smart TV, Roku, or streaming box.
- Open the app again and test a different title.
- Retry the original title. If you were casting, test it directly in the TV or streaming device’s app too.
- Check for app and device software updates if the error returns.
These low-risk steps refresh the playback session and help identify where the failure sits. HBO’s general support guidance also recommends restarting, updating, signing out and back in, clearing cache or data where available, and reinstalling when needed. HBO Max troubleshooting and Max error-code help provide general steps, but neither publishes a dedicated definition for code 905.
What does error 905 mean?
HBO’s public troubleshooting material does not say that 905 definitively means a connection, server, account, or subscription error. Treat it as a playback or delivery error and use the pattern of failures to narrow down the cause rather than changing account settings based on the code alone.

Historical user reports describe 905 while casting to Chromecast, including cases where particular shows or episodes failed to cast even though playback on a phone worked. Those reports are useful clues, not an official diagnosis or proof that every 905 error is Chromecast-related. See examples in these title-specific playback reports, Chromecast reports, and casting reports.

If 905 appears only while casting
- Confirm both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network. A phone on cellular data or a different Wi-Fi network may not connect reliably to the receiver.
- End and restart the cast session. Close the app completely, restart the receiving device, then reconnect.
- Update the app and receiver. Check for HBO Max/Max updates and install available software or firmware updates for the phone, TV, Chromecast, or streaming box.
- Test the same title directly on the TV. If it plays in the TV’s app but not when cast, the cast session or compatibility path is the likely trouble spot.
- Try another title. If other titles cast normally but one episode does not, avoid resetting everything repeatedly; the problem may be specific to that title’s delivery to the receiver.
If your goal is simply to watch, use the TV’s native app, another supported streaming device, or an HDMI connection from a computer. These are workarounds, not proof that the casting fault is permanently fixed.

Use the pattern to narrow it down
| What happens | What to try or infer |
|---|---|
| Only one title fails; other titles play | Test that title directly on the TV and on another device. A title-specific delivery or availability issue is possible; report the exact title and episode if it persists. |
| The title plays on your phone but fails on the TV when cast | Focus on the cast session, receiving device, app compatibility, or title delivery to that device—not your subscription first. |
| Every title fails on one device, but works elsewhere | Update the app and device, sign out and back in, then consider clearing app data or reinstalling on the affected device. |
| Wi-Fi fails but cellular data or another network works | Investigate the router, local network, VPN, or proxy. Restart the router and temporarily disable VPN or proxy to test. |
| Multiple titles fail on multiple devices and networks | A broader service, account, or regional issue becomes more plausible. Check official support and contact HBO Max rather than repeatedly reinstalling. |
Check your network, VPN, and region
Test HBO Max on another network if possible: for example, switch briefly from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or try a hotspot. If that works, restart your router and temporarily turn off any VPN or proxy before testing again. A speed test can confirm available bandwidth, but it cannot guarantee that casting, device compatibility, or a particular title’s delivery will work.

HBO’s playback guidance lists at least 5 Mbps for HD and recommends 50 Mbps or more for 4K. These figures are network guidance, not a guaranteed fix for error 905 or casting problems. See HBO Max buffering and playback help.

If only one title fails, check whether it is available in your country and on your subscription tier. Do not assume that the error code itself proves an account or regional restriction.
Clear cache, sign in again, or reinstall
Try these steps after restarting and updating, especially if multiple titles fail on just one device. Clearing data or reinstalling may sign you out, so make sure you can access your sign-in details first.

- Android TV: Open Settings > Apps > HBO Max > Clear cache. If needed, choose Clear data, then reopen the app and sign in.
- Some Samsung TVs: Go to Settings > Support > Device Care > Manage Storage, select HBO Max, choose View Details, then clear cache. Clear data if necessary. Not all models provide these controls.
- Roku: Highlight HBO Max, press Star (*), and choose Remove app. Restart Roku through Settings > System > System restart, then find HBO Max in the Streaming Store, reinstall, and sign in. Roku may prevent removal while an active subscription billed through Roku remains in place.
- Other devices: Use the device’s app-management settings to clear cache or data if available, or uninstall and reinstall the app using that device’s app store.
Clearing data and reinstalling address possible local app-state problems. They are unlikely to fix a title-specific or service-side issue, so test another title and device before taking these steps.
