Netflix is moving into live programming, but it is not trying to recreate cable. Its strategy is to pick events that can make an on-demand service a shared destination for a few hours: NFL games for mass reach, boxing for personality-driven spectacle, WWE Raw for a weekly habit, and even a hot-dog-eating contest for viral novelty. The bet is on scarce, culturally resonant moments—not a channel grid or a season-long sports bundle.
Live events, not a live-TV bundle
“Live TV” can mean three different things: a continuous lineup of channels, a comprehensive sports package, or occasional events that viewers watch together at a scheduled time. Netflix is pursuing the third model. It has not become a cable replacement with local news, daytime programming and dozens of always-on channels, nor does a selection of NFL games make it a one-stop home for the league.
Netflix’s clearest strategy is an event layer on top of its on-demand service. These broadcasts give subscribers a reason to show up at a particular time and give advertisers a concentrated audience. They can also feed promotion for documentaries, interviews, highlights and related titles in the broader catalog.

Four kinds of appointment viewing
| Event type | Examples | Potential job for Netflix |
|---|---|---|
| Tentpole | NFL games | Reach a large audience at a predictable, high-demand moment |
| Spectacle | Paul–Tyson and other boxing | Turn famous personalities and a simple premise into a global event |
| Recurring habit | WWE Raw | Give viewers a weekly reason to return |
| Virality experiment | Chestnut–Kobayashi | Test whether an unusual contest can become a shareable appointment |
These formats are not interchangeable. The NFL offers scale and a strong seasonal calendar; boxing can be marketed to sports and celebrity audiences alike; weekly wrestling can encourage routine; an eccentric contest can attract curiosity beyond established sports fandom. Together, they suggest Netflix is testing different kinds of live attention rather than building around a single sport.
Why the NFL is the biggest test
Netflix streamed its first NFL Christmas Day doubleheader on December 25, 2024: Chiefs–Steelers and Ravens–Texans. Its initial arrangement included at least one Christmas game in each of 2025 and 2026, with the possibility of an additional game in a later year, according to the company’s Q2 2024 shareholder letter.
Netflix’s 2026 upfront presentation describes a broader announced slate for that year: a regular-season game in Australia involving the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers, a Thanksgiving Eve game involving the Green Bay Packers and Los Angeles Rams, two Christmas Day games, and a Week 18 game. That is a Netflix-announced set of selected games, not evidence that Netflix has acquired the NFL as a whole.

The calendar is predictable, advertisers value the audience, and a major broadcast can serve as both a technical stress test and a promotional occasion. Sports documentaries and personality-led titles can extend the connection beyond game day.

- SUPERIOR FEEL: Designed for the optimal balance between softness and toughness, the soft composite material enhances the natural feel of the ball, allowing for better handling and precision

But scale makes the test unforgiving. Viewers expect a reliable stream, good picture and sound, accurate timing, useful discovery and strong commentary. A failed on-demand launch can often be watched later; a technical failure during a live game can ruin the shared moment. Rights fees and production costs also matter: a big audience by itself does not establish that a deal is profitable.
Boxing as attention economics
The November 15, 2024 Paul–Tyson fight illustrates why Netflix might choose a one-off spectacle instead of buying a full season of a sport. Jake Paul and Mike Tyson were recognizable outside boxing, the matchup was easy to explain, and the event could attract sports fans, celebrity-news followers and casual viewers. It also offered material around the fight—such as interviews, promotion and highlights—that could carry attention into other Netflix programming.
Netflix reported more than 108 million live global viewers for the event. That is a company-reported audience figure, not a statement that 108 million people watched simultaneously or an independently audited equivalent of a traditional television rating. Joe Hand Promotions separately estimated more than one million additional viewers in over 6,000 U.S. bars and restaurants, as noted in Netflix’s audience announcement.
The point is not that celebrity boxing is the same product as a boxing season. It is that familiar personalities, a clear narrative and a limited-time event can make a fight travel well across audience groups. That is an attention strategy, not necessarily a bet on boxing as a year-round category.

Why hot dogs belong in the same conversation
The Chestnut–Kobayashi event was a live hot-dog-eating showdown, not a conventional sports-rights package. Netflix described Joey Chestnut as a 16-time Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Champion and Takeru Kobayashi as a six-time champion in its Media Center listing.
Its strategic relevance is the premise: could a familiar, eccentric contest become a Netflix-exclusive appointment? Could it reach people who would not tune in for football or boxing, create clips worth sharing and offer brands a setting for participation? It tests whether novelty itself can be a programming category. The contest is not equivalent to an NFL game in scale or function; it sits at the experimental, viral end of the portfolio.
WWE Raw tests whether the audience returns
A one-night event can produce a spike. A weekly live series tests whether Netflix can build a habit. WWE Raw began streaming live on Netflix on January 6, 2025. Netflix became its exclusive U.S. home, while the wider WWE offering and availability vary by territory; Netflix’s viewing guide explains those regional differences.

Raw therefore plays a different role from a Christmas football game or a boxing match. Its weekly schedule can encourage repeat viewing and make Netflix part of an audience’s routine. Whether it does so successfully depends on more than live reach: consistency, discovery, rights and the value viewers place on returning each week all matter.

The advertising logic—and its limits
Live events give advertisers a known time and a concentrated audience. They can also create opportunities around the broadcast, including sponsorships, integrations and pre- or post-event promotion, while conversation is happening. Netflix’s 2026 advertising presentation places live programming—including NFL, WWE and Westminster Dog Show programming—within its commercial proposition. Netflix says its advertising-supported reach can connect brands with viewers they may not reach through broadcast television or other streamers; that is Netflix’s claim.
There is a business case, but not a guaranteed one. Rights and production expenses, distribution and technical infrastructure, and ad-sales execution determine whether an event makes economic sense. A large audience does not automatically lead to new subscriptions, lower churn or enough advertising revenue to cover those costs. Netflix has to convert a moment of attention into value beyond the moment.
The approach also carries a brand trade-off. Netflix offers ad-supported and ad-free plans, but its live-events guidance says live or special events may include commercial breaks across plans. Viewers who assume “ad-free” means no breaks in every kind of programming should check the event’s terms and plan experience.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat subscribers should expect
- No separate Netflix event fee: Netflix says live events are included with its plans, rather than sold as a separate pay-per-view purchase.
- Not every event is available everywhere: Sports and entertainment rights vary by country, and the lineup may differ by territory.
- Device support can matter: Netflix says live events are available across supported device categories, but an older television, streaming player or app version may not support live playback immediately.
- Replay is not the same as live access: A title may become available after the broadcast, and the replay window can vary. Do not assume every event will be available on demand indefinitely.
- Live playback may have controls: Depending on device and app support, viewers may be able to pause, rewind, start from the beginning or jump to the live point. Check Netflix’s Help Center guidance for current device and event details.
- Commercial breaks may appear: Netflix says some live programming can contain breaks across all plans, including ad-free plans.
If a live title does not play on a device, first check that the Netflix app is current and that the device is supported for live playback. If the event is not available live on that device, it may become accessible later as a regular title; timing and replay availability depend on the event.

How Netflix’s model differs from other services
The useful comparison is not simply which service has “the most live TV.” Traditional broadcasters and virtual multichannel services offer broader schedules and channel grids. League-focused services can provide deeper coverage of a particular sport, sometimes for an additional fee. Other streamers combine selected recurring sports and events with a wider subscription offering. Netflix’s distinguishing idea is selective, high-profile appointments layered onto an on-demand catalog.
That can be a fit for subscribers who want Netflix’s original programming and occasional exclusive live events without making a separate pay-per-view purchase. It is a poor fit as a sole service for viewers who need local channels, news, broad NFL coverage or a large menu of live sports. For those needs, a channel bundle or sport-specific service is closer to the product being sought.
The unresolved question: attention or durable value?
Netflix’s live strategy makes sense if the events do more than attract a temporary audience. The company needs to know whether they bring in subscribers, give existing customers reasons to stay, create advertising revenue, lift viewing elsewhere in the catalog or build repeat habits. Audience metrics alone cannot answer those questions, and different measures—global viewers, households, views and peak concurrent viewers—are not interchangeable.

The portfolio has a plausible logic: limited rights commitments can offer reach without buying every game in a season; distinctive events can generate broad promotion; and recurring programming such as Raw can test retention more directly than a one-off special. Against that are expensive rights, technical exposure, fragmented territorial availability and the possibility that a spectacle generates headlines without long-term engagement.
Netflix is taking over selected functions associated with television—appointment viewing, shared cultural moments, live-event advertising and weekly programming—without offering television’s full breadth. The strongest description is not “Netflix is becoming cable,” but that it is building a selective live-event layer for a global streaming service.
