Hulu announced its Windows 10 Universal app on February 14, 2016. It brought the service to Windows 10 PCs, tablets and Windows 10 Mobile phones through one app built on Microsoft’s Universal Windows Platform (UWP). The release added Cortana voice commands, Live Tiles and cross-device viewing continuity; it was a historical Windows launch, not a new app announcement today.
What Hulu launched in February 2016
Hulu’s February 14, 2016 announcement introduced a Windows 10 app distributed through the Windows Store. Hulu said it used one UWP codebase to serve PCs, tablets and mobile phones running Windows 10.
At the time, the release replaced separate Hulu Plus apps for Windows PCs and tablets and for Windows Mobile, according to contemporaneous coverage. That report said existing installations would be upgraded; it does not establish that every legacy installation updated successfully.

“Universal” referred to a shared Windows app platform and codebase that could target multiple Windows 10 device categories. It did not mean Hulu had released one app for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, or that every supported device had identical functionality. The design could adapt to PCs, tablets and phones while keeping the experience recognizably consistent.

Windows 10 PC and Windows 10 Mobile were distinct environments. Hulu’s launch announcement named those Windows device types; it did not establish that the same app launched on Xbox One at the same time.
What the app added for viewers
Cortana voice commands
Hulu promoted Cortana integration for searching for shows or movies and starting playback. Its example was “Cortana, Hulu, watch Empire.” This was a feature of the Windows 10 and Cortana experience in 2016, not a current command guide.

Live Tiles and Start pinning
The Hulu Live Tile could surface featured shows and movies. Contemporary reporting also said viewers could pin Hulu, as well as individual shows or movies, to Start. These features put updates and shortcuts in the Windows shell rather than only inside the streaming app.
A responsive redesign
The new interface replaced the older panorama-style layout with a responsive design intended for different screen sizes. Thurrott also described improved behavior on high-DPI displays; that was contemporaneous editorial assessment, not a formal performance test.

Viewing continuity between devices
Contemporaneous coverage reported that the app retained playback state across Windows PCs, tablets and Windows Mobile devices. In practical terms, a viewer could switch among those Windows devices and continue from the saved point.
What viewers needed—and what “free” meant
- A compatible Windows 10 PC, tablet or Windows 10 Mobile phone, plus access to the Windows Store to obtain the app.
- Internet access and a Hulu subscription to watch Hulu content. The app download was free; the streaming service was not.
- A supported location and access to the relevant Hulu catalog. The launch materials do not establish a complete country-by-country availability list, so the announcement should not be read as proof of worldwide access.
A contemporaneous secondary report listed monthly prices of $7.99 with commercials and $11.99 for a commercial-free option. Those are 2016-era figures, not current Hulu prices or plan guidance: MensGear’s 2016 report.

Why the launch matters as history, not as a current app recommendation
The release showed Hulu embracing Microsoft’s then-promoted strategy of building Windows apps for multiple device types from a shared platform. For Windows users, the practical pitch was a more unified interface, voice-based discovery, Start integration and playback continuity. Those benefits were tied to Windows 10 features such as Cortana and Live Tiles, and to a device ecosystem that included Windows Mobile.
Hulu’s current materials point PC viewers toward browser access instead. Its current Live TV page lists Hulu.com on Mac and PC browsers, while its supported-devices information does not verify that the original 2016 UWP app remains available or supported. That is not proof that no Store listing exists; it means readers should not assume the old app can still be installed, updated or used. For Hulu on a Windows PC now, use Hulu.com in a supported browser rather than relying on the historical Windows Store client.
