YouTube first tested Sleep Timer with Premium members in August 2024, but it did not remain a Premium-only experiment: on October 15, 2024, YouTube announced that the feature was available to all users on mobile devices. The current Help page says to open a video’s player settings and choose Sleep Timer. Premium is not required for the ordinary feature, though availability and interface details can vary.
What YouTube Sleep Timer does
Sleep Timer pauses the current YouTube video after a selected duration. It is useful for a podcast, documentary, ambient video, or other long-form viewing when you do not want playback to continue indefinitely after you fall asleep.
It is a playback control, not a device-wide sleep command: YouTube documents that the video pauses and a silent notification appears. It does not promise to lock or power off your phone, close the app, or stop playback in other apps. YouTube’s Help page also says you can reset the timer if you want to keep watching.
How to set it now
- Open the video you want to watch or listen to.
- Open Settings in the video player.
- Select Sleep Timer.
- Choose a duration. Playback pauses when the timer expires.
- If you are still awake, use the timer control to reset or adjust it.
YouTube’s current Help page documents this route for computers, Android, and iPhone or iPad. The exact placement and availability of the control may differ by platform, app version, account, or rollout. The Help page confirms that users can choose a duration but does not list the current duration choices.

What Premium members tested in 2024
In August 2024, YouTube offered Sleep Timer as an experiment for Premium members. Contemporary reporting said the test offered 10, 15, 20, 30, 45, or 60 minutes, or an option to stop when the video ended. Those are the reported choices in that experiment, not a verified list of options in today’s interface. The experimental page reportedly listed September 2, 2024, as the test’s end date. TechCrunch’s report on the test described enrollment through YouTube’s experimental-feature controls: the experimental-features page on desktop or Settings → Try experimental new features on mobile. Those were historical test instructions, not the current setup path.
Is YouTube Premium required?
No—not for the ordinary Sleep Timer feature, according to YouTube’s release history. On October 15, 2024, YouTube said it was making Sleep Timer available to all users on mobile devices after testing it with Premium members. That announcement establishes mobile availability; it does not establish that the same control appears on every television, embedded player, or other interface. YouTube’s announcement is the clearest distinction between the early-access test and the broader release.

Premium may still suit viewers who also want benefits such as ad-free viewing, downloads, background play, and YouTube Music Premium. But the sleep timer alone is not a sound reason to subscribe. Premium availability and plan details can vary by country, device, operating system, plan, and location. First check the video player’s Settings menu; the old experimental-feature setting is not the current documented route. YouTube says product experiences can vary, so a missing option may reflect the interface, account, device, or app version rather than a Premium requirement.

- Update the YouTube app, then close and reopen it.
- Confirm you are signed into the intended Google account.
- Check the player settings while a video is open, rather than looking only in account settings.
- If possible, try the documented control on another supported device or a computer browser.
- If it remains unavailable, consult YouTube Help; these checks may help identify the issue but cannot guarantee the control will appear.
Built-in timer or device timer?
YouTube’s timer is convenient when the goal is simply to pause the active YouTube video. A device-level timer may offer broader control, but its setup and effect depend on the operating system and may affect more than YouTube. Choose based on whether you want to stop one video or manage device playback more generally; YouTube’s feature should not be treated as a universal shutdown command.
