To watch live TV with HDHomeRun, connect a compatible tuner to an antenna and your router by Ethernet, scan for channels, then open the HDHomeRun app on a supported device on the same home network. It is a network TV tuner—not a streaming service—and basic live viewing does not require an HDHomeRun DVR subscription.
What HDHomeRun does—and what it does not
An HDHomeRun receives over-the-air television from an antenna and makes the channels available to compatible devices on your home network. Some models can also tune certain compatible cable signals. The tuner is usually beside the router, not the television; a computer, phone, streaming device, or console plays the signal through an app.

Channel availability comes from the signal entering the tuner, not from an HDHomeRun subscription. The HDHomeRun FAQ describes antenna and compatible cable reception and notes that set-top-box outputs are not suitable inputs. The standard setup is intended for local-network viewing; do not assume that the basic app will let you watch while away from home.
Check the tuner, antenna, network, and device first
Before installing apps, confirm that your hardware matches the signal you want to receive. HDHomeRun models are not interchangeable: they differ in broadcast standards, tuner count, and DVR-storage options.

Specifications are summarized from SiliconDust’s FLEX, CONNECT, and SERVIO documentation. A two-tuner model generally supports up to two tuner-dependent live streams or recordings at a time; a four-tuner model offers more capacity. Simultaneous viewing and recording of different channels uses tuner capacity. Sharing behavior can vary by app and workflow, so do not treat the tuner count as a guaranteed number of independent viewers in every setup.
FLEX 4K and CONNECT 4K can receive ATSC 3.0 broadcasts, but that does not mean every local station carries ATSC 3.0, every receiving device can play every such channel, or that any channel is broadcast in 4K. DRM-encrypted ATSC 3.0 services may also limit compatibility. See SiliconDust’s ATSC 3.0 documentation before choosing a model for that feature.
The basic equipment for antenna TV is:
- A compatible HDHomeRun tuner and its power adapter.
- An antenna and coaxial cable connected to the tuner.
- A router or network switch, with Ethernet from the tuner to the network.
- A supported viewing device and app.
The tuner normally connects to the router by Ethernet; it is not usually configured as a Wi-Fi client. Your viewing device can use Wi-Fi, but weak wireless coverage can cause stuttering even when antenna reception is good. A computer or DVR storage device connected by Ethernet is preferable for troubleshooting and sustained recordings. The installation instructions cover the standard antenna, Ethernet, and power connections.

Connect the tuner and scan for channels
- Connect the antenna. Attach its coaxial cable to the HDHomeRun antenna input. Reception depends on location, antenna placement, obstructions, wiring, and the stations’ broadcast frequencies.
- Connect Ethernet and power. Run Ethernet from the HDHomeRun to your router or network switch, then connect the power adapter and allow the unit to start.
- Open the device setup page. On a device on the same home network, visit http://hdhomerun.local. If you have multiple tuners, use the unit’s device ID in the local address, as described in the DVR setup documentation.
- Run a channel scan. Use the channel configuration area and choose Detect Channels or the scan option shown for your device. Wait for the scan to complete and save the lineup.
- Trim the lineup if needed. Favorite channels you want to find quickly or hide channels you do not want listed.
- Install the viewer. Get the HDHomeRun app from the official downloads page or the relevant platform’s app store.
When the app opens, it should normally discover a tuner on the same local network and show the scanned lineup. Guide data, app downloads, updates, and account functions can require internet access; local discovery and playback behavior during an internet outage depends on the app version, device, and firmware.

Watch on a Windows PC or Mac
Windows 10 or 11
- Install the HDHomeRun app from the Microsoft Store or the official Windows downloads.
- Open the app and allow it to find the tuner. Approve a Windows firewall prompt for the app if one appears and is appropriate for your private home network.
- Choose Live, then select a channel.
The setup utility and the viewer app have different jobs: use the viewer to watch, and the setup utility for configuration, channel scanning, or certain hardware functions. Some older DUAL units require an initial scan in the Windows setup utility; their limitations are covered below and in SiliconDust’s legacy-hardware notes. Do not assume the local device page is itself a full browser-based TV player.
If Windows does not find the tuner, check that the PC is on the home network, temporarily disconnect a VPN, and check whether firewall rules block local discovery. A laptop that has moved to another network will not find a tuner left at home.
Mac
- Install HDHomeRun from the Mac App Store or the official download source.
- Connect the Mac to the same home network as the tuner.
- Open the app, choose Live, and select a channel.
The Mac App Store listing describes the app as a way to watch free over-the-air TV with an HDHomeRun connected to an antenna and home network. Playback can still depend on the Mac’s ability to decode the channel format.

SiliconDust’s official lists include several TV platforms, but availability and feature support are not uniform. The app information and downloads page are the best checks for the current platform listings.

For Xbox, the documented route is the Microsoft Store; see the Xbox app instructions. Roku setup and its DVR restriction are described in the Roku instructions. Apple TV support and listed app features appear in the tvOS App Store listing. PlayStation is not named in SiliconDust’s current platform lists cited here, so do not assume an official PlayStation app is available.
If your television has no supported app, connect a supported streaming box, Xbox, or computer by HDMI. DLNA or a third-party media server can be alternatives only if the TV or player supports that particular workflow.
Watch on iPhone, iPad, or Android
- Install the HDHomeRun app from the Apple App Store or your Android device’s app store.
- Connect the device to the home network used by the tuner.
- Open the app, choose Live, and select a channel.
The official iOS listing describes live viewing, pause/rewind, and access to HDHomeRun DVR recordings. For Android or Fire OS devices without the usual app store, use only SiliconDust’s official download and sideload instructions on its downloads page; avoid unofficial APK repositories.

Some versions of the app provide channel navigation, a guide, pause, and rewind controls. Button names and layouts differ among touchscreens, remotes, keyboards, and app versions; the app guide describes the available controls and sections.

Do you need HDHomeRun DVR?
No. The tuner, antenna, home network, and app are enough for basic live TV. DVR adds recording, local storage, and guide features. SiliconDust’s DVR page, updated May 7, 2026, says “Record this airing” is available free to all customers. It describes a free tier with an extended live-TV buffer, tuner sharing, and about three days of guide data in either direction. The full guide tier is listed at $35 USD per year and adds automatic or series recording, XMLTV API access, and about 14 days of guide data in either direction. Those are the terms and price stated on that page as of its update date.
HDHomeRun DVR recordings are stored locally, not in a cloud DVR. The documented components are a tuner, a DVR subscription or applicable free features, local storage, and a playback device with the HDHomeRun app.
Choose storage that suits your setup
- A compatible FLEX can use a USB hard drive.
- A PC, Mac, or NAS can serve as storage.
- SCRIBE models include storage; SERVIO storage requires a separate tuner.
SiliconDust recommends at least 500 GB and estimates roughly 150 hours of recording at that capacity; actual hours vary with channel and recording quality. The documentation cautions against USB thumb drives for sustained recording. A wired connection for the tuner and storage is recommended because recordings produce sustained network traffic.

- Connect the USB hard drive to the FLEX.
- Visit http://hdhomerun.local in a browser on the home network, or use the device-ID-based local address if necessary.
- Select Format and confirm only if you are ready to erase the drive. Formatting deletes its existing contents.
When Plex, Emby, or another option makes sense
The official HDHomeRun app is the straightforward choice for ordinary live viewing: it avoids setting up a separate media server. Plex, Emby, NextPVR, and MythTV are alternatives SiliconDust lists for compatible workflows on its third-party software page.

- Consider Plex or Emby if you already operate a media server and want live TV or recordings alongside your own media, or need a client ecosystem the official app does not cover.
- Consider NextPVR or MythTV if you want more control over a recording backend and are comfortable with configuration.
- Stay with the official app if your goal is simply to watch antenna channels on supported devices.
Third-party setups add server hardware or software, account and compatibility decisions, and sometimes separate subscriptions. Remote access, transcoding, and DVR behavior depend on the chosen platform and configuration; they are not automatic features of a basic HDHomeRun setup.
Fix common HDHomeRun problems
The app cannot find the tuner
- Check that the tuner’s Ethernet cable reaches the router or network switch and that the unit has finished starting.
- Put the viewing device on the same home network. Guest Wi-Fi, client isolation, VLAN rules, and some router settings can block local device discovery.
- Temporarily turn off a VPN, then close and reopen the app.
- Restart the tuner and router. Try visiting http://hdhomerun.local.
- If the local page still cannot be reached, troubleshoot the network before investigating video decoding or antenna reception. Check official software and firmware options on the downloads page.
The channel scan finds no channels or misses stations
- Check the coaxial connection and antenna placement; remove unnecessary splitters temporarily.
- Confirm that the tuner supports the broadcast standard or cable signal you are trying to receive.
- Run a fresh scan. Reception depends on location, antenna, wiring, interference, and station conditions.
- For cable, confirm the signal is compatible and unencrypted. A provider set-top box’s output is not a substitute for a compatible tuner input, according to the HDHomeRun FAQ.
Video stutters, buffers, or fails on one device
Separate reception, network, and decoder problems rather than assuming the antenna is at fault. Try the same channel on a wired computer, then test another channel and another client. If playback improves when the viewing device uses Ethernet, Wi-Fi is a likely factor. If one device fails while another plays smoothly, its decoder or app compatibility may be the issue. For Plex or Emby, also check the server and any transcoding in use. If the problem affects only ATSC 3.0 channels, check broadcast and DRM compatibility for that channel and device.
An older DUAL unit behaves differently
SiliconDust says legacy DUAL hardware needs its initial channel scan on a Windows PC using the HDHomeRun Setup utility. It cannot use HDHomeRun DVR software and is not supported with Roku, although it can work with current apps on several other listed platforms after configuration. Consult the specific legacy-hardware guidance instead of assuming every model works with every app.

Choose a setup based on how you will watch
