YouTube does not officially export ordinary MP3 files. YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium provide encrypted, app-controlled offline playback rather than transferable audio files (YouTube Help; Premium restrictions).
If you need a real .mp3, use a local tool such as yt-dlp with FFmpeg only for music you uploaded, public-domain material, content whose Creative Commons license permits the download, or material for which you have direct permission. For commercial music, buying a downloadable file from the artist, label, or a legitimate store is usually the clearest route.
Choose the method that matches your goal

What YouTube’s own download button actually does
On an eligible video, the YouTube or YouTube Music app may show a Download control for Premium subscribers. The resulting data is encrypted and intended for playback through the service; it is not saved as a user-accessible MP3 that you can copy to a USB drive or another music player. A Premium subscription therefore does not convert streamed songs into DRM-free files (YouTube Help).

Availability, catalog access, and retention can vary with location, licensing, account status, and continued service eligibility. If your only requirement is listening without an internet connection, this is the safest and simplest option. If you need a file independent of YouTube, use an authorized source instead.

Check that you are allowed to make a copy
Before running any downloader, write down the video URL and verify the uploader’s rights statement or license. A “free music” title, a missing copyright notice, or a third-party download button does not by itself grant permission.
- You uploaded the video and own or control the music.
- The work is genuinely in the public domain in your jurisdiction.
- The video carries a Creative Commons license that permits your intended copying, modification, and (if relevant) commercial use.
- The copyright owner gave you direct permission.
Keep attribution text and license details with the downloaded file. YouTube explains permission, public-domain works, Creative Commons, the Audio Library, and Creator Music as possible lawful routes, but the exact license still controls (YouTube copyright guidance). YouTube’s Terms also limit downloading or reproducing content unless the service permits it, the rights holder authorizes it, or applicable law provides an exception (YouTube Terms).
In the United States, fair use is a fact-specific analysis commonly involving criticism, commentary, news reporting, teaching, or research. It is not a blanket exemption for making a private MP3 copy of a commercial song (U.S. Copyright Office fair-use FAQ). Laws and contractual terms differ by country, so obtain local advice for a disputed case.
Download authorized material with yt-dlp and FFmpeg
1. Install from identifiable official sources
Get yt-dlp from its official project or documented release channels, and install FFmpeg (including FFprobe) from a reputable distribution source. The project’s installation and FAQ pages document supported methods and dependencies: installation guide and FAQ. Avoid repackaged “YouTube to MP3” installers that bundle advertising software or ask for account credentials.

Package-manager builds can lag behind the current release. Follow the current instructions for Windows, macOS, or Linux on the official pages rather than copying an old command from an unmaintained guide.
2. Convert one authorized video to MP3
yt-dlp --no-playlist --extract-audio --audio-format mp3 --audio-quality 0 "VIDEO_URL"--no-playlistlimits the job to the supplied video.--extract-audioselects the applicable audio stream and creates an audio-only output.--audio-format mp3asks FFmpeg to convert the result to MP3.--audio-quality 0requests FFmpeg’s best variable-bitrate quality setting.- Replace
VIDEO_URLwith the authorized URL, keeping quotation marks if it contains special characters.
For a workflow that requires a nominal fixed bitrate, use:
yt-dlp --no-playlist --extract-audio --audio-format mp3 --audio-quality 192K "VIDEO_URL"A higher output bitrate cannot restore detail that was absent from the streamed source. The relevant options are documented in yt-dlp’s option reference.

yt-dlp --no-playlist --format bestaudio "VIDEO_URL"This normally retains the best available stream, which may be Opus, WebM, or M4A. Because MP3 conversion is another lossy encode, keeping the source can preserve more quality and sometimes reduce file size (yt-dlp audio-quality discussion; yt-dlp FAQ). Choose MP3 when an older player, car stereo, editor, or other application specifically requires it.

4. Control the output name and location
Without an output template, the file is normally written to the terminal’s current working directory. This template creates a title-based filename:
yt-dlp --no-playlist --extract-audio --audio-format mp3 --audio-quality 0
--output "%(title)s.%(ext)s" "VIDEO_URL"Windows PowerShell, macOS Terminal, and Linux shells handle paths and quoting differently. If you choose a custom folder, use the syntax documented for your shell and confirm the destination before starting a batch job.
5. Inspect the result
- Confirm the filename ends in
.mp3and plays in your intended application. - Check duration against the source and listen for silence or truncation.
- Review title, artist, and album fields; uploader-provided metadata can be incomplete or wrong.
- Keep the URL, license, permission, and attribution information separately from the audio file.
Common failures and safe recovery
“FFmpeg not found”
FFmpeg may be missing, absent from your system PATH, or installed where yt-dlp cannot find it. Install FFmpeg from an official distribution source, verify that both ffmpeg and ffprobe run in a new terminal, and restart the terminal after changing PATH. If the binaries are in a nonstandard directory, point to that directory with --ffmpeg-location (FAQ; option reference).
“Video unavailable” or “sign-in required”
The video may be private, members-only, age-restricted, region-restricted, deleted, or unavailable to your account. Do not use a downloader to bypass a paywall, access control, or account restriction. Ask the rights holder for an authorized file or use an official download facility. The project warns that browser cookies can expose an account to temporary or permanent bans; use them only when necessary and with permission (extractor guidance).

Formats are missing or extraction suddenly fails
Update the official build, then retry with diagnostics:
yt-dlp -U
yt-dlp -vU --no-playlist --extract-audio --audio-format mp3 "VIDEO_URL"Read the specific error instead of repeatedly retrying at high volume. YouTube delivery and anti-automation behavior changes, so a command that worked previously may stop working (FAQ; known issue tracker example; extractor notes).
The MP3 sounds worse
The source was already compressed, and MP3 adds another lossy encoding step. A nominal 192K or 320K setting describes the new MP3 encode; it does not recreate information discarded upstream. Keep the original Opus/AAC stream when quality matters (audio-quality discussion).

That is expected for YouTube Premium offline downloads: they are app-controlled rather than ordinary user files (YouTube Help). A regular MP3 must come from an authorized source and be transferred through a lawful computer, cloud, or device-sync workflow. Avoid unreviewed mobile downloader apps.

Safer alternatives to converting a YouTube stream
YouTube Premium or YouTube Music Premium
Use these when convenience and offline playback inside YouTube matter more than file ownership. They do not provide MP3 export. See the official service pages for current regional availability and plan details: YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium.
YouTube Audio Library and Creator Music
For a documentary, presentation, or other published video, start with YouTube’s Audio Library or Creator Music instead of converting a commercial song. Inspect each track’s license, attribution requirement, territory, duration, and commercial-use terms; permissions vary by track (YouTube copyright and licensing guidance).
Direct artist, label, or download-store purchase
When you need a permanent, transferable file, choose a seller that explicitly supplies MP3, AAC, FLAC, or another format you can download. This avoids an unnecessary re-encode and gives you a clearer record of what you purchased. Do not assume a service is DRM-free or quote a price without checking its current product page.

Security and policy boundaries
Anonymous converter websites can expose you to deceptive buttons, malware, aggressive advertising, playlist over-downloads, privacy collection, and unclear data handling. A reputable workflow uses identifiable project sources, limits the job to one item when appropriate, and never supplies browser cookies or account passwords to an untrusted service.
YouTube’s developer policies prohibit API-based services from enabling downloads outside the Premium experience and from separating audio and video components. Those policies reinforce that unofficial extraction is not an official YouTube feature (Developer Policies Guide; Developer Policies). Tool availability can change as YouTube changes its delivery systems, so no command should be treated as permanent.
