To put music on most standalone MP3 players, copy local audio files from a computer over USB: connect the player, open it in File Explorer or Finder, drag compatible files into its Music folder, wait for copying to finish, then eject it and let its library refresh. The key is having actual transferable audio files—not just songs downloaded inside a streaming app—and using a transfer method your exact player supports.
Before you transfer music
- Identify the player and its USB mode. Look up the exact model’s manual or support page for its supported formats, folder structure and connection options. A “MP3 player” label does not guarantee that every audio format or transfer method will work.
- Use a data-capable USB cable. Some cables charge but do not carry data. Keep the player powered on and unlocked if required.
- Find local music files. Check that the music is stored on your computer as files, rather than only available inside a streaming app.
- Check available storage. Include the player’s microSD card if the model supports one.
- Back up music before reorganizing or deleting anything. Copying is safer than moving until you have confirmed the files play on the player.
USB connection mode matters especially on a Mac. SanDisk describes MSC (mass storage) and MTP modes: MSC generally presents the player as a drive on Windows and macOS, while SanDisk says its MTP mode is not supported natively on macOS. Other manufacturers may offer their own Mac software, so check the exact model’s instructions.
Transfer music on Windows with File Explorer
- Connect the player to the PC with a data-capable USB cable. If a USB-use prompt appears on the player, select File Transfer or the mode specified in its manual.
- Open File Explorer, select This PC, then open the player under Devices and drives or Portable Devices.
- Open the player’s existing Music folder. If there is no Music folder, check the manual before creating one; some models expect a specific structure or transfer software.
- Open a second File Explorer window with your local music. Select the songs or artist and album folders, then drag them into the player’s Music folder.
- Wait until Windows finishes copying. Do not disconnect the player while files are being written.
- Use the Windows eject or Safely Remove Hardware control if available, then disconnect the player. Allow it to scan or refresh its music library.
SanDisk’s transfer instructions describe drag-and-drop as a normal way to copy files and warn against disconnecting during a transfer. Exact folder names and behavior still depend on the model.
Transfer music on a Mac
If the player supports MSC or another Mac-compatible mass-storage mode, it should appear in Finder as a drive.

- Connect the player and open Finder.
- Select the player in the sidebar under Locations. If the manufacturer requires a particular USB mode, select it on the player first.
- Open its Music folder, then open another Finder window containing the local music files.
- Drag songs or artist and album folders to the player. Wait for copying to finish.
- Click the eject icon beside the player in Finder before disconnecting it.
If it does not appear, the player may be MTP-only, proprietary, locked, or connected with a charge-only or faulty cable. Try a known-good data cable and another USB port, then consult the model’s Mac-specific instructions. A generic MTP utility is not guaranteed to work; switching to MSC if the player supports it, using manufacturer software, or transferring from a Windows PC may be necessary.
Sony’s guidance varies by Walkman model: its computer transfer overview and Mac instructions for applicable models describe specific workflows. For Android-based models, follow the model’s directions; some ask you to choose File Transfer after connecting. Sony’s NW-ZX500 content instructions describe that model’s workflow and note that Mac users may need additional software.
Use Windows Media Player to sync tracks or playlists
Synchronization is an alternative to manual copying when a player supports MTP and you want to manage selections or playlists. SanDisk identifies MTP as the mode associated with Windows Media Player auto-sync and playlist synchronization; support varies by device.

- Add the local tracks to the Windows Media Player library.
- Connect the player in its MTP mode, if applicable, and open the Sync pane.
- Select the tracks, albums or playlists to sync, then start synchronization.
- Wait for completion before ejecting or disconnecting the player.
If the player is not recognized, its format is unsupported, or the files are protected, syncing will not make them compatible. Use the model’s manual or manufacturer software for supported workflows.

For a Sony Walkman, check the exact model’s workflow
Some Walkman models accept drag-and-drop; others use Sony software or a particular transfer procedure. Sony’s support guidance says Music Center for PC replaced the discontinued Media Go software for applicable Windows workflows. Its software and transfer guidance is model-specific. Search the exact model number plus “transfer music” rather than assuming all Walkman players work alike.
Which music file formats will work?
Check the player’s specification before copying or converting. Common extensions indicate file types, but support depends on the model, codec, bitrate and sometimes DRM protection.

SanDisk’s model compatibility table shows how support differs across its players. For example, its listed ranges include MP3 at 8–320 kbps, AAC at 16–320 kbps, and Ogg Vorbis at 16–500 kbps on applicable models; these are not universal limits for every MP3 player. Do not assume that a file will play just because its extension looks familiar.

Convert files only when compatibility requires it
If the player cannot play a file’s format, conversion to a format it supports—often MP3 for older devices—may help. Keep the original as a backup. Converting a lossy file such as AAC to MP3 cannot restore audio information already discarded, and a higher bitrate does not improve a poor-quality source. Choose a setting within the player’s documented limits rather than assuming the highest available bitrate is best.

Changing a filename extension does not convert the audio. Use reputable audio software and do not extract audio from streaming services or use dubious download sites as a substitute for legitimate files.
Rip a personal audio CD on Windows
If your music is on a CD, Windows Media Player can create local audio files that you can then copy to a compatible player. Microsoft says it can rip CDs to WMA, WAV or MP3; it cannot change the format or quality of a track that has already been ripped.
- Insert the CD and open Windows Media Player.
- Choose Rip settings, select MP3 if broad compatibility is your priority, and choose an audio-quality setting suited to the player and available storage.
- Select Rip CD and wait for the files to be created.
- Find the ripped tracks in the Music folder, then copy them to the player using the Windows steps above.
See Microsoft’s instructions for burning and ripping CDs. This process is for making files from CDs you are entitled to use, not for obtaining copyrighted music from unauthorized sources.

Streaming downloads are usually not transferable files
A streaming service’s download feature generally saves music for offline listening inside its app; it does not necessarily create an ordinary MP3 file that can be copied to a generic player. Apple describes Apple Music downloads as a way to listen offline through the service, not as a general export of MP3 files. Paying for a music subscription does not by itself grant transferable audio files.

A DRM-free purchased MP3 is normally suitable if the player supports MP3. Protected purchases and subscription downloads may be restricted to an authorized app or device ecosystem. Older iTunes purchases can differ by purchase era and protection status, so inspect the actual file and verify whether it is protected rather than assuming all purchased tracks are alike. SanDisk’s transfer guidance distinguishes DRM-free iTunes AAC/M4A files from formats that may need conversion on older models.
If a protected track will not transfer or play, use a compatible authorized device, obtain a transferable version from a legitimate source, or—where permitted—make a local file from a CD you own.

A simple folder structure works well for players that browse storage directly:

01 Song Title.mp3Many players use embedded tags, not just folder names, to sort their library. If tracks appear under “Unknown Artist” or “Unknown Album,” check the tags for Artist, Album and Track Number, then refresh the player’s library. Consistent Genre and embedded artwork can help on models that display them, but album art and playlist support vary. SanDisk associates some metadata and playlist features with MTP workflows, so do not assume every player reads tags or artwork in the same way.

On an older device, keep filenames reasonably short and avoid unusual characters. Some players need time to scan newly copied files; wait for a “refreshing media” process to finish before using the player or disconnecting it.
Troubleshoot a player that does not show or play music

Can you transfer music directly from a phone?
Sometimes an Android phone can copy local files to a player over USB-C, but success depends on USB host support, cable compatibility, file permissions and the player’s transfer mode. iPhones and iPads generally do not work like ordinary USB file managers for generic MP3 players. A computer is the more reliable intermediary. In either case, a song downloaded inside a phone app is not automatically an exportable audio file.

Do I need to eject the player before unplugging it?

What bitrate should I use?
Use a bitrate supported by the player and appropriate for your source and storage. There is no one best setting for every model or file.
