Yes—Amazon Prime includes eBooks through a benefit called Prime Reading. Eligible members can borrow a rotating selection of Kindle eBooks, magazines, comics, and other digital reading content at no additional per-title charge, then read it on a compatible Kindle e-reader, Kindle app, or Kindle for Web.
These titles are borrowed rather than permanently owned. Amazon currently allows up to 10 Prime Reading titles at once, and the selection can change. That makes Prime Reading useful for occasional reading, but it is not the same as owning every Kindle book or subscribing to Kindle Unlimited.
What is Prime Reading?
Prime Reading is a digital reading benefit included with eligible Amazon Prime memberships. It is a curated section of the Kindle catalog, not a way to make every Kindle Store book free. Eligible content can include eBooks, magazines, comics, and shorter digital publications.
The catalog rotates. A title available today may later be removed or become unavailable for new borrows, so a static list of “free Prime books” is not reliable. Amazon’s current Prime Reading guidance says members may have up to 10 eligible titles borrowed at one time (Amazon Help).

Are Prime Reading eBooks really free?
“Free” is shorthand for included with your Prime membership. You normally do not pay a separate per-book purchase price when borrowing an eligible title, but Prime itself is a paid membership unless you are using a trial, promotion, household benefit, or another qualifying arrangement.
Most importantly, borrowing does not transfer ownership. The book remains tied to your Prime Reading entitlement and can be returned, removed from the catalog, or become inaccessible if that entitlement ends.

How to find and borrow Prime Reading books
- Sign in to the Amazon account that has the Prime membership.
- Open Amazon’s dedicated Prime Reading area rather than relying on a general Kindle search.
- Browse or search the available catalog.
- Open a title and confirm that the page identifies it as eligible for Prime Reading.
- Select Add to Library, not the purchase option. Amazon documents this control in its Prime Reading instructions (Amazon Help).
- If Amazon offers a delivery choice, select the intended Kindle e-reader or Kindle app.
Labels and button locations can differ between Amazon.com, the shopping app, mobile browsers, Kindle software, and different countries. If Add to Library is missing, verify the account, marketplace, Prime status, and the title’s eligibility.
How to download a Prime Reading book to a Kindle
Kindle e-reader
- Borrow the title on Amazon or through a supported Kindle interface.
- Choose the Kindle device as the delivery destination when prompted.
- Connect the Kindle to Wi-Fi.
- Open Home or Library and select the borrowed title.
- Wait for the download to finish before going offline.
Exact menus vary by Kindle generation and software version. Amazon explains the general internet-delivery process for Kindle content (Amazon Help).
Kindle app on a phone, tablet, Fire device, Mac, or Windows PC
- Install the official Kindle app and sign in with the same Amazon account.
- Open Library.
- Tap or click the borrowed title.
- Allow it to download, then open it from the library.
Amazon also supports reading through Kindle for Web at read.amazon.com. Availability depends on the device, operating system, marketplace, and account.

Can Prime Reading books be read offline?
Yes, after the title has been downloaded to an authorized Kindle device or app. Borrowing adds the book to your Amazon/Kindle library; downloading stores the reading file locally for use without an active connection.

Offline storage does not turn the book into a purchased copy. If you return it, lose the relevant Prime entitlement, or Amazon ends its Prime Reading availability, access can be revoked even if the file was previously downloaded. Do not attempt to export or convert a borrowed Kindle file.
How many books can you borrow?
The current Prime Reading limit is 10 eligible titles at once. When all 10 slots are occupied, return at least one title before borrowing another. Returning an unfinished book removes it from the active allocation; you may need to borrow it again later if it remains eligible.

How to return a Prime Reading book
- Open Manage Your Content and Devices on Amazon.
- Go to Your Content.
- Use the content-type filter and select Prime Reading.
- Select the title you want to remove.
- Choose Return this title and confirm.
This is different from deleting a purchased Kindle book. Use the Prime Reading filter so you do not have to search through every item in your library.

Prime Reading is a sensible starting point if you already pay for Prime and read occasionally. Kindle Unlimited is more appropriate for frequent readers who need a broader catalog and 20 active borrows, provided they are willing to pay for another subscription. Neither service guarantees every bestseller.
Why a Kindle book may not be included
- The title is not currently in Prime Reading.
- It was removed from the rotating catalog.
- It is available through Kindle Unlimited but not Prime Reading.
- It is sold only as an individual Kindle purchase.
- You are browsing a different Amazon marketplace; catalogs vary by country.
- The account is not recognized as having the relevant Prime entitlement.
- The format or device is incompatible, or the title is an audiobook rather than a supported Kindle book.
- The account or library page has not refreshed.
If a borrowed book does not appear, confirm the account, check the Library’s downloaded/all-content filters, sync the Kindle or app, verify the delivery destination, and restart the device or app. An initial download requires Wi-Fi and sufficient storage. Software labels differ by Kindle model, so there is no single universal troubleshooting menu.

Does Prime Reading include audiobooks?
Do not assume that every Prime Reading eBook includes Audible narration. Audio, text-to-speech, and other accessibility features are title-specific. Amazon documents Assistive Reader support for eligible Kindle books, including some Prime Reading borrows, but that is not the same as a professionally narrated audiobook (Amazon Help).
What happens if you cancel Prime?
Prime Reading access depends on an active qualifying entitlement. A downloaded title should not be treated as permanently retained after cancellation. If you want lasting access to a particular book, purchase its Kindle edition when available; Amazon delivers purchased Kindle books to registered devices and apps.
Which reading option fits you?
- Already have Prime and read occasionally: Try Prime Reading first; it adds no separate reading subscription.
- Read heavily across genres: Compare Kindle Unlimited, which offers a larger catalog and a 20-title limit.
- Need one specific book permanently: Buy the Kindle edition rather than relying on a borrow.
- Want to test Kindle without buying hardware: Use the free Kindle app or Kindle for Web.
- Prefer distraction-free e-ink reading: Consider a compatible Kindle e-reader, but remember that Prime Reading also works on apps.

Bottom line: Amazon Prime does include selected Kindle eBooks through Prime Reading. You can borrow up to 10 at a time, add them to your library, download them to a compatible Kindle or Kindle app, and read offline. They remain borrowed—not owned—so Prime Reading is best for readers who accept a changing catalog and temporary access.
