Choose Cakewalk Sonar if you use Windows; choose Logic Pro if you use a compatible Mac or iPad. These are not two versions of the same cross-platform choice: Sonar is Windows-only, while Logic is built for Apple hardware. Once your computer settles the first question, compare licensing, workflow, bundled tools and whether your existing projects and plug-ins can make the move.

Both can record, edit, arrange, mix and export finished music. A DAW does not make a mix inherently better simply by being the DAW; the practical differences are the tools, workflow, compatibility and delivery formats. Cakewalk describes Sonar’s professional core features, including ProChannel, ARA and a 64-bit mix engine in its Sonar FAQ; Apple documents Logic’s audio, MIDI, plug-in, notation and surround capabilities in its technical specifications.
First, check whether your computer can run it
On a Windows computer, Sonar is the relevant option; on a Mac or iPad, Logic is the relevant option. Neither has an official native version for the other platform. Cakewalk says Sonar is PC-only and points Mac users who need a BandLab-linked workflow toward Cakewalk Next; see its platform guidance.
Cakewalk’s current minimum requirements list Windows 11 or later as officially supported; Windows 10 may install but is not officially supported. The listed requirements include an eight-core CPU or native ARM64, 16 GB RAM and 5 GB minimum installation space, with 20 GB recommended. Cakewalk recommends ASIO-compatible audio hardware. Internet is encouraged for installation, authorization and updates, though Sonar can be used offline after authorization.

Apple’s Logic product page currently lists macOS 15.6 or later and an Apple-silicon Mac; it lists iPadOS 26 or later and an iPad with an A12 Bionic chip or later for iPad. Apple’s separate technical-specifications page lists macOS 14.4 or later. Because those official pages differ, check the App Store requirement for the specific Logic version and your exact device before buying or updating macOS.
Storage also matters. Apple says Logic needs 6 GB for a minimum installation and up to 72 GB for its full Sound Library. Cakewalk lists 5 GB minimum and 20 GB recommended for Sonar, figures that do not measure equivalent content. Before committing, check your computer’s CPU and OS, audio-interface drivers, plug-in formats and free storage.
What do they cost—and what does “free” mean?
Sonar has a usable Free Tier requiring a free BandLab account. It supports recording, editing, mixing, saving and exporting, with unlimited audio, MIDI and instrument tracks. It is not feature-identical to the paid tier: the comparison lists Membership-only features and content including plug-in oversampling, Track Manager, Workspaces, Elastique stretch mode, POW-r dithering, BandLab Sounds, Overloud TH-U Cakewalk and the Core Plugins Suite. Cakewalk says fully unlocked Sonar is available through BandLab Membership; check the official Membership page for current pricing rather than relying on older prices.

For Logic, Apple lists a U.S. standalone Mac purchase at $199.99. Its product page also offers Logic through Apple Creator Studio at $12.99 per month or $129 per year after a 30-day trial, with listed student and educator pricing of $2.99 per month or $29.99 per year. Apple says the subscription and standalone versions contain the same Logic features; the subscription bundles other Apple creative apps as well. Prices and availability can vary by region, so confirm them on Apple’s page.

The fair comparison depends on what you already own. If you have a Windows PC, Sonar Free Tier lets you try the workflow before paying for Membership. If you already have a compatible Mac, Logic’s standalone price includes a substantial sound library and tools. If you would need to buy a Mac, replace plug-ins or acquire sample libraries, the software price is only part of the cost. Conversely, Creator Studio may make sense if you also want its other creative apps. Neither DAW’s price includes the computer or audio interface.
Workflow: what changes in real projects?
Recording, editing and mixing
Sonar is a conventional timeline-and-track DAW oriented toward Windows recording and mixing. Its Skylight interface, ProChannel, buses, sends and detailed routing suit producers who like organizing sessions around tracks and a console-style mixer. ARA support can matter when you use compatible audio-editing tools, and Sonar also includes AudioSnap. The free tier retains core track, recording and mixing work; specific advanced tools vary by tier.
Logic covers the same broad recording and mixing jobs, but its appeal is often how closely recording, editing and songwriting tools fit into Apple’s environment. Apple lists Quick Swipe Comping for assembling takes, Smart Tempo for working with performances and tempo, and full plug-in latency compensation, including external audio and MIDI gear. Its mixer, Track Stacks, automation and surround support suit complex arrangements as well as conventional recording sessions.
For either DAW, interface setup, driver quality, buffer settings and plug-in load have more practical impact on a recording session than a brand-level claim of “better sound.” Match the software to your hardware and habits, then check latency and routing in your own setup.

Songwriting, MIDI and arrangement
Logic has a clear integrated toolkit for writers and producers: Chord ID and Chord Track, Apple Loops, Live Loops and Session Players. Apple describes Session Players as accompaniment parts that can follow chord progressions, including drum, bass, piano, keyboard and synth options. Stem Splitter, Mastering Assistant, Smart Tempo and ChromaGlow are also among the features Apple highlights. These tools can speed up sketching, arranging and trying variations, but they are not a substitute for knowing what you want the song to do.
Sonar is not devoid of songwriting or MIDI features; it offers a traditional DAW environment with extensive track and routing control, MIDI-device configuration, AudioSnap, articulation maps and ARA-oriented workflows. Its appeal is stronger for someone who prefers to build and edit a session directly rather than rely on Apple’s integrated songwriting aids. Cakewalk’s MIDI setup guide covers input and output devices, controller events, aftertouch, pitch wheel, SysEx, buffers and MIDI echo.
Logic’s specifications list fine MIDI timing resolution, articulation sets, MIDI plug-ins and extensive key-command customization. If external synths or controllers are central to your work, compare your specific routing needs and test the interface with your devices; feature lists alone do not guarantee the workflow you prefer.
Included instruments, effects and plug-ins
Logic’s value includes a large bundled sound library. Apple’s published specifications list 5,953 patches, 13,552 Apple Loops, 1,250 Sampler instruments, 110 Quick Sampler instruments, 3,556 Alchemy presets and 150 Drum Machine Designer kits, alongside its instruments, effects and MIDI plug-ins. Those counts are Apple’s published figures and can change by version; quantity alone does not establish that a sound is right for your genre.

Sonar Free Tier provides the DAW’s core production features, while some premium instruments, effects and content are reserved for Membership. In Sonar 2026.04, Cakewalk added BandLab Instruments, Effects and FXChains; its BandLab instruments and effects FAQ says BandLab Effects includes more than 70 lightweight plug-ins, and notes that instrument soundbanks need to be downloaded before first use.
Sonar supports Windows VST/VST3 plug-ins and ARA workflows; Logic uses Audio Units. A plug-in installed as Windows VST3 is not automatically usable as a Mac AU, even if it has the same name. Check that each important plug-in has a version for your target OS and processor, that your license can be activated there, and that sample libraries and installers are available. Legacy Cakewalk projects may open yet still rely on discontinued plug-ins, missing libraries or old authorization systems.

Logic has a documented Score Editor with multiple voices, tablature, chord grids, articulation sets and MusicXML import and export. That makes it the more explicit choice here for producers who need notation exchange within a DAW. For serious engraving, orchestration or publishing, compare dedicated notation software too; a DAW score editor is not automatically a full notation-production replacement. The cited Cakewalk documentation establishes extensive MIDI and production features, but not equivalent evidence of a Score Editor with Logic’s documented functions.
Logic is also the clearer fit for an Apple-centric Dolby Atmos workflow. Apple documents surround configurations up to 7.1.4 and spatial-audio tools, including ADM BWF64 export. Atmos matters if your delivery calls for it, but a stereo-only producer may gain little from it. A proper Atmos release also requires suitable monitoring, room setup, rendering, metadata and delivery knowledge. Do not assume Sonar offers an equivalent native workflow without checking the exact edition and current documentation.

Project compatibility: what moves, and what does not
Sonar can open projects made in Cakewalk by BandLab and older SONAR products, according to Cakewalk’s FAQ. Cakewalk by BandLab can open Sonar projects, but cannot use Sonar-exclusive features. Cakewalk says the older Cakewalk by BandLab product reached end of life on December 31, 2025; it is not the same licensing situation as current Sonar. Older articles that call Cakewalk by BandLab the current free product may be out of date.
Logic can open supported Logic projects, GarageBand songs and Logic for iPad projects, and supports interchange formats including MIDI, MusicXML, AAF, XML, Apple Loops and several audio formats. That does not mean it can open a native Sonar project as a fully editable Logic session. Cross-DAW transfers usually preserve selected audio or MIDI material, not every instrument, plug-in, bus, automation lane and editing decision.
Moving from Cakewalk Sonar to Logic
- Keep the original Sonar project as your authoritative archive; do not overwrite it with exports.
- Freeze or render virtual instruments that have no Mac equivalent. Where remix flexibility matters, export both dry and processed versions.
- Consolidate audio tracks from a common start point so they line up when imported.
- Export MIDI parts and document tempo changes, markers, tunings and time signatures.
- Export a stereo reference mix, plus stems with effect tails where needed. Sonar’s route is
File > Export > Audio; see Cakewalk’s export guide. - Record plug-in names, presets, sample libraries, routing and automation decisions before rebuilding the session.
- Replace Windows-only VSTs with compatible Mac/AU versions, then check activation and library paths.
- Rebuild buses, sends and automation in Logic and compare the result against your reference mix.
Moving from Logic to Sonar
- Export consolidated audio stems and MIDI, and keep the original Logic project.
- Render Logic-only instruments and effects; replace AU plug-ins with Windows VST/VST3 versions where available.
- Recreate Track Stacks as folders, buses or equivalent routing in Sonar.
- Rebuild Logic-specific Chord Track, Apple Loops and Session Player arrangements manually or render them to audio.
- Check tempo, alignment, automation, plug-in licenses and sample-library locations after import.
BandLab projects are a separate case: Sonar’s import path is File > Quick Start Screen > Online Projects. If tracks or sounds are missing, Cakewalk recommends checking that you are signed into the right BandLab account and reviewing the download/import options. Some BandLab instruments or effects may not be available in Sonar and need replacement. See the official import guide.

- Windows user starting out: Try Sonar Free Tier first. It supports core production with unlimited audio, MIDI and instrument tracks; move to Membership only if you need its restricted tools or content.
- Mac songwriter or GarageBand user: Logic is the natural next step if your Mac meets the current requirement. Its sound library, project continuity, Session Players, chord tools and iPad workflow are the stronger fit.
- Recording or mix engineer with a Windows plug-in collection: Sonar avoids a platform move and offers a traditional routing and mixing environment. Confirm that your essential plug-ins work with your Sonar tier.
- Electronic producer: Logic’s loops, Live Loops, instruments and songwriting features may suit rapid idea-building; Sonar can be a fit if you prefer a linear Windows track workflow and already own the tools you need.
- Composer needing notation: Logic has documented Score Editor and MusicXML capabilities, but compare dedicated notation software for engraving-heavy work.
- Producer delivering Dolby Atmos: Logic is the better-documented integrated choice here. If you only deliver stereo, do not let Atmos decide the purchase.
- Former Cakewalk user considering a Mac: Logic is not a drop-in Sonar replacement. Plan for stem/MIDI transfer, rebuilding and possible plug-in replacement; Cakewalk Next is another BandLab-linked option to investigate for Mac support.
- Linux user or someone needing one DAW across Windows and Mac: Neither is the match. Cakewalk identifies Next for Mac support; other cross-platform DAWs may also be worth evaluating.
Verdict
Pick the DAW that fits the computer and projects you already have, not the one with the longer feature list. Sonar is the practical Windows choice, especially for an existing Cakewalk archive or a producer who wants to begin with a free tier. Logic is the practical Apple choice for Mac/iPad continuity, bundled songwriting tools, notation exchange and integrated Atmos delivery. If switching platforms is part of the decision, budget for migration time and plug-in replacements before comparing software prices.
