For free movies and TV, start with established services such as Tubi, Pluto TV, Plex, or The Roku Channel—not sites claiming to be Project Free TV mirrors. The services below offer licensed programming, but their catalogs, device support, and availability vary by country. Most are ad-supported; Kanopy and Hoopla require access through a participating library or university.
Updated August 18, 2026. No legal free service is a complete replacement for every title, and no legitimate service reliably streams films still in theaters for free.

These are not interchangeable. Tubi is the clearest first stop for choosing a movie or episode on demand; Pluto TV, Xumo Play, and Sling Freestream are more oriented toward scheduled live channels. The Roku Channel and Plex combine types of viewing. Kanopy and Hoopla are worth checking if you have library or university access.

Tubi describes its service as free, legal, and supported by advertising, and says it does not require credit-card information. Its help center explains how the service works. Expect commercial breaks and a changing catalog; do not assume that a particular film, current-season episode, or title available in one country will be available everywhere. Check Tubi on the device you intend to use, since account and playback requirements can vary by platform.
Verdict: The best first choice for a free, legal on-demand replacement, provided the title you want is in your regional catalog.
2. Pluto TV: best for channel surfing
Best for: Viewers who like turning on a channel and seeing what is playing.
Pluto TV offers live, scheduled channels as well as on-demand programming. That makes it a closer fit than a conventional on-demand library if what you miss is browsing a TV guide. The trade-off is that a live channel follows a schedule: you cannot necessarily select any episode at any time. Its on-demand selection is separate from the live lineup, and both can vary by region.
Verdict: Choose Pluto TV for the channel-grid experience; choose an on-demand service when you have a specific title in mind.
3. The Roku Channel: best for a mix of live and on-demand
Best for: Viewers who want free live channels and on-demand movies or shows, especially in a Roku household.
The Roku Channel combines free, ad-supported programming with live channels. Use the service’s name—The Roku Channel—to distinguish it from Roku devices and the Roku operating system. The experience and selection can differ between supported countries and devices. Some interfaces may also show paid rentals, purchases, or subscriptions alongside free programming, so check the title’s label before selecting it.

Verdict: A useful all-purpose option where supported, particularly if you already use Roku hardware.
4. Plex: best for free streaming plus a personal media library
Best for: People who want a free streaming catalog and may also want to organize their own legally obtained media.
Plex offers free, ad-supported movies, shows, and live channels. Its free streaming catalog does not require you to run a Plex Media Server. Plex also has separate personal-media and optional paid features, which can make the app confusing at first. Plex’s free-versus-paid guide explains the distinction; a Plex Pass is not needed to access the free catalog and does not unlock a larger catalog of free films or remove ads from it.
Plex says its catalog is licensed, changes over time, and may be restricted by location. Its free-content FAQ covers advertising and geographic availability. Supported devices include a range of browsers, phones, smart TVs, streaming devices, and consoles, but check compatibility for your particular device.
Verdict: A flexible choice if you understand that Plex’s licensed free catalog, personal files, and paid features are different things.
5. Xumo Play: best for a straightforward free-TV interface
Best for: Viewers who want live channels and a television-style browsing experience.
Xumo Play is a free, ad-supported service with live channels and on-demand programming. It fits the same broad category as other free ad-supported streaming TV services, but it is more useful for channel browsing than for finding a specific new episode. Availability depends on your market and device; confirm both before relying on it.

Verdict: Try Xumo Play if scheduled free television is what you want, rather than a deep on-demand library.
6. Sling Freestream: best for a free live-TV layer
Best for: Viewers who want live channels without signing up for a full paid Sling package.
Sling Freestream is a free, ad-supported service that is separate from paid Sling Orange and Sling Blue plans. It can be useful for scheduled news and entertainment programming, but it is not a substitute for every cable channel, premium package, or live sports offering. Check the interface carefully: Sling also presents paid content, and channel availability can change.
Verdict: Consider it for free live programming, not as a comprehensive replacement for cable or on-demand viewing.
7. Kanopy: best for library-backed films and documentaries
Best for: Eligible library and university users looking for films, documentaries, independent cinema, and educational programming.

You may need a library card or institutional login, and the institution may set monthly viewing limits. Verdict: Check Kanopy first if you have institutional access and prefer film or documentary programming without the standard ad-supported model.

8. Hoopla: best for library access to video and more
Best for: Library users who want movies and shows alongside ebooks, audiobooks, music, and comics.
Hoopla requires a participating library; a library card by itself does not guarantee access. Your library sets borrowing limits, so available monthly checkouts can determine how useful the service is for regular viewing. Hoopla is a helpful complement to Kanopy where both are offered, or an alternative to check if your library does not provide Kanopy.

What was Project Free TV, and is it still a dependable option?
Project Free TV was associated with free online access to television and movie links. Today, a site using that name—or a similar domain—should not be assumed to be the original service or to have permission to stream what it offers. Ownership, licensing, privacy practices, and security may be difficult to verify. A search result or mirror domain is not proof of affiliation.
For a dependable alternative, use a service that clearly identifies its operator and explains how its programming is provided. Tubi, for example, states that its service is free and legal and funded by advertising. Plex says its free catalog is licensed. Those statements apply to those services; they do not establish that every site using similar branding is legitimate.
How to spot an unverified streaming site
A professional-looking page, HTTPS, or a disclaimer saying “legal” does not by itself prove that a service has streaming rights. Be especially cautious if a site offers recent theatrical releases or complete seasons but does not identify a company, licensing basis, terms, or a credible way it funds the content. Multiple redirects, fake play buttons, forced browser notifications, unexpected downloads, or prompts to install an unofficial app are reasons to leave.

- Do not enter payment details, passwords, or personal information into an unverified service.
- A VPN does not make unauthorized streaming lawful or grant a service the rights to show a title. Do not use one to bypass a platform’s territorial restrictions.
- Distinguish permanently free, ad-supported programming from a trial, rental, purchase, or paid add-on.
How to find a specific movie or show legally
- Search the title on JustWatch US, an availability guide. Check whether a result is free, a rental, a purchase, or included with a subscription; JustWatch is a discovery tool, not a streaming provider.
- Check the title directly in Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, and Plex, as well as any service or library you use. Catalogs change and may differ by country.
- Look at the broadcaster’s or studio’s official website for legally free episodes, clips, or other programming.
- If it is not available free, consider a legal rental or purchase, a library copy on disc, or a paid subscription. An unknown mirror is not a reliable workaround.
There is no legitimate free service that carries every current movie and television show. Free platforms generally offer licensed catalog titles, library programming, or ad-supported releases. Plex says it cannot legally offer films still in theaters for free through its service; its free streaming overview describes the licensed content it does offer.

This guide is aimed primarily at U.S. viewers. A service’s catalog, supported devices, and account flow may differ outside the United States—and even between devices in the same country. Plex, for example, says that its catalog changes and that geographic restrictions can apply. Do not assume that a service available in one market is available everywhere.
Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Plex’s free catalog, Xumo Play, and Sling Freestream generally use ads to fund free access. Kanopy and Hoopla use library or university access instead; eligibility and borrowing limits depend on the institution. Account requirements can also vary by platform and feature.
