For a two-hour movie, plan on about 4–6 GB in HD or 14–15.4 GB in 4K. One movie a week in HD can use roughly 16–24 GB a month, depending on the service and device. A 50 GB allowance is a reasonable starting point for regular solo HD viewing; frequent 4K or several household viewers call for a much larger allowance.
There is no universal per-movie figure: quality, runtime, service, device and simultaneous streams all matter. The figures below are planning estimates based on published service rates, not guaranteed billing totals.
Calculate your monthly movie data
Use this estimate:
Monthly GB = movie length in hours × GB per hour × movies per month × simultaneous streams
For example, a two-hour Netflix movie at its published HD rate is about 6 GB (2 × 3). A two-hour Netflix 4K movie is about 14 GB (2 × 7). A three-hour Netflix HD movie is about 9 GB. Two separate two-hour HD streams watched at once are about 12 GB in total.

For household budgeting, add a 15–25% buffer for trailers, autoplay, previews, other video, updates and variation in playback quality. That is a planning recommendation, not a provider standard.
“GB needed” usually means the monthly data allowance consumed by viewing. It is different from a downloaded file’s storage size, which varies by service, title and download setting, and from internet speed, measured in Mbps. Speed affects whether playback is smooth; it does not tell you how large your monthly allowance is.
How much data does each quality use?
Netflix publishes maximum hourly estimates, while Disney+ gives approximate rates that vary by device and setting. The two services’ figures are not interchangeable.
| Quality or setting | Published rate | Approx. data for a two-hour movie | Source and context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Netflix Low | Up to 0.3 GB/hour | About 0.6 GB | Netflix help |
| Netflix Medium | Up to 0.7 GB/hour | About 1.4 GB | Netflix help |
| Netflix SD | Up to 1 GB/hour | About 2 GB | Netflix help |
| Netflix HD | Up to 3 GB/hour | About 6 GB | Netflix help |
| Netflix 4K / Ultra HD | Up to 7 GB/hour | About 14 GB | Netflix help |
| Disney+ SD on mobile | About 0.6 GB/hour with Save Data | About 1.2 GB | Disney+ device-specific estimates |
| Disney+ SD on TV-connected device | About 0.7 GB/hour with Save Data | About 1.4 GB | Disney+ device-specific estimates |
| Disney+ 1080p on TV-connected device | About 2 GB/hour | About 4 GB | Disney+ device-specific estimates |
| Disney+ 4K UHD/HDR on TV-connected device | About 7.7 GB/hour | About 15.4 GB | Disney+ device-specific estimates |
These are approximate service figures, not fixed amounts for every title or playback session. Adaptive quality, compression, ads, audio, device and connection conditions can change actual use.

Low quality and SD
Low quality or SD can stretch a small mobile allowance and may be adequate on a small phone screen. The trade-off is a softer picture with less visible detail. Netflix says its mobile Save Data mode permits about six hours per GB; Disney+ lists about 0.6 GB/hour for mobile Save Data, with its TV Save Data estimate at about 0.7 GB/hour.
HD: the practical default for many viewers
HD usually offers a strong balance between clarity and data use. Netflix lists up to 3 GB/hour for HD; Disney+ lists about 2 GB/hour for 1080p on a TV-connected device and about 2–2.5 GB/hour for mobile HD settings. On a phone or ordinary laptop, the visible gain from 4K may be modest; on a large television, 1080p can be a sensible compromise.
4K UHD and HDR
4K is the largest data variable. Netflix lists up to 7 GB/hour for Ultra HD, while Disney+ lists about 7.7 GB/hour for automatic 4K UHD/HDR playback on a TV or TV-connected device. A two-hour film therefore comes to about 14–15.4 GB using those figures.

Monthly examples by viewing frequency
The following arithmetic assumes two-hour films and the published hourly figures shown. It excludes other household traffic and is not a promise about a provider’s meter.
| Playback rate and context | One movie/week (4/month) |
Three movies/week (12/month) |
One movie/day (30/month) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Netflix Low, 0.3 GB/hour | 2.4 GB | 7.2 GB | 18 GB |
| Netflix Medium, 0.7 GB/hour | 5.6 GB | 16.8 GB | 42 GB |
| Netflix SD, 1 GB/hour | 8 GB | 24 GB | 60 GB |
| Netflix HD, 3 GB/hour | 24 GB | 72 GB | 180 GB |
| Netflix 4K, 7 GB/hour | 56 GB | 168 GB | 420 GB |
| Disney+ TV 1080p, about 2 GB/hour | 16 GB | 48 GB | 120 GB |
| Disney+ TV 4K UHD/HDR, about 7.7 GB/hour | 61.6 GB | 184.8 GB | 462 GB |
How many two-hour movies fit in a data allowance?
This table uses Netflix’s published rates. Movie counts are rounded down and do not reserve data for other use.
| Monthly allowance | Low 0.3 GB/hour |
SD 1 GB/hour |
HD 3 GB/hour |
4K 7 GB/hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 GB | 16 movies | 5 movies | 1 movie | Less than 1 |
| 25 GB | 12 movies | 12 movies | 4 movies | 1 movie |
| 50 GB | 25 movies | 25 movies | 8 movies | 3 movies |
| 100 GB | 50 movies | 50 movies | 16 movies | 7 movies |
| 200 GB | 100 movies | 100 movies | 33 movies | 14 movies |
These counts are estimates from hourly rates; actual use varies. For example, at Netflix’s HD rate, four two-hour movies use about 24 GB before other activity, so a 25 GB cap leaves very little headroom.
Why service, device and connection change the estimate
There is no single data rate that applies to all platforms. Disney+ reports different estimates for mobile, television and browser playback: its cited help information lists about 2.5 GB/hour for mobile Wi-Fi-only high quality, 2 GB/hour for mobile Automatic, 0.6 GB/hour for mobile Save Data, 7.7 GB/hour for TV-connected Automatic, 2 GB/hour for TV-connected Moderate, 0.7 GB/hour for TV-connected Save Data, and 4.2 GB/hour for web Automatic. Its browser playback is limited to 720p in that information. The page was updated June 29, 2026. See Disney+ data usage details.

Playback quality may shift with connection speed, congestion, device capability, screen, browser or app support, title availability, codec and subscription tier. YouTube describes connection speed, screen size, original video quality and browser support as factors in playback quality, and notes that resolution availability depends on device and compression-format support. Its published speed recommendations are about 1.1 Mbps for 480p, 2.5 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p and 20 Mbps for 4K. Those figures describe connection speed, not monthly GB use. See YouTube playback quality information, YouTube speed recommendations and YouTube HD and UHD availability.
Disney+ separately recommends about 5 Mbps for HD, 8 Mbps for live content and 25 Mbps for 4K UHD; these are speed recommendations rather than data allowances. See Disney+ recommended speeds.

If usage is unexpectedly high, check whether Wi-Fi dropped during playback, cellular quality is set high, downloads are using mobile data, a hotspot is active, or autoplay and previews are running. Phone cellular statistics and the provider’s usage meter can help identify which connection is being charged.
Home broadband and Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi changes which connection carries the stream; it does not guarantee that the connection is unmetered. Home broadband can have a monthly cap, an excess-use charge, a threshold after which traffic is throttled, or terms specific to fixed wireless, satellite or hotspot use. Check the provider’s account page and plan terms rather than assuming home viewing is unlimited.
Offline downloads
Downloading can help while traveling, where reception is poor, or when you want to avoid streaming the same film repeatedly. A download still uses data if obtained over cellular, and its file occupies device storage. Final size varies by title, length, service, device and quality setting; it is not necessarily the same size as the corresponding stream. Netflix includes a Wi-Fi-only control for downloads in its mobile settings. Download availability and retention can also depend on plan, device, licensing and service rules.
Choose an allowance that matches your viewing
| Viewer pattern | Practical starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Occasional phone viewer | 10–25 GB/month | Can suit one or two monthly movies with Save Data or Wi-Fi-only playback; leave room for other mobile use. |
| Regular solo HD viewer | About 50 GB/month | A useful starting point for regular HD films after allowing for social video, updates, browsing, music and hotspot use. |
| Frequent HD viewer or occasional 4K viewer | About 100 GB/month | Offers more room for HD viewing and some 4K, though frequent 4K can exceed it quickly. |
| Daily 4K viewer or several simultaneous streams | Unlimited or very high-cap data | At published service rates, even a single daily two-hour 4K film can exceed 400 GB in a month. |
| Traveling viewer on cellular data | Use downloads over Wi-Fi or a plan sized to the viewing calculation | Cellular streaming is charged to the mobile allowance, while offline files need device storage. |
For more than one viewer, calculate each stream separately. A plan’s “unlimited” label alone does not establish that video resolution, hotspot use and high-speed data are unrestricted; check the plan terms.
Reduce data use without making movies unwatchable
- Choose Save Data or SD on a small screen or when cellular data is scarce.
- Use HD rather than 4K if the screen, viewing distance or title makes the extra detail difficult to notice.
- Set cellular playback to Wi-Fi Only where appropriate, and restrict downloads to Wi-Fi.
- Disable unnecessary autoplay or previews and stop playback when leaving a screen.
- Keep 4K for films where the improved detail or HDR matters to you.
- Compare the phone’s cellular meter, router or provider dashboard against the service’s playback settings if usage exceeds your estimate.
If 4K does not appear despite a compatible subscription, check that the title is offered in 4K, the device and app support the playback path, the plan includes that quality, the connection is stable, and the TV or streaming device is set to output the expected resolution.
