To stop hearing your live voice or instrument in BandLab, turn off Monitoring on the track you are recording. The input can still be recorded; this control stops BandLab from playing the live input back to you. If you want to hear yourself but get an echo, use wired headphones and troubleshoot latency instead.
First, identify what you are hearing
“Hearing yourself” can describe several different audio paths. The right fix depends on whether you want no live sound, or want to hear it without a distracting delay.
- Normal monitoring: BandLab routes your microphone or instrument input to your headphones while you perform. It can help you sing or play in time, but you can switch it off.
- Delayed monitoring: You hear an echo or slapback because the signal takes time to pass through the device, software, or effects before reaching your headphones.
- Acoustic bleed: The microphone picks up backing audio leaking from speakers or headphones.
- Feedback: A microphone picks up speaker output repeatedly, producing a ringing or escalating howl.
- Hardware direct monitoring: An audio interface may send its input straight to its headphone output, bypassing BandLab. BandLab’s Monitoring control may not silence that separate route.
- Earlier playback: A previous take or another timeline track may be playing alongside the live input.
Monitoring is a recording function, not mastering. Mastering concerns the finished mix; this problem is about what you hear while recording and whether the recorded take is aligned afterward.

Turn off Monitoring without stopping the recording
BandLab’s monitoring instructions describe separate controls for its web Studio and mobile app. Labels and layouts can change, so look for the track control named Monitoring.

BandLab Web
- Connect headphones or earphones.
- Select the track you are recording.
- For a Voice/Audio track, open the AutoPitch panel. For a Guitar/Bass track, open the Source panel.
- Click Monitoring to turn it off.
- Record a short test, then play it back to confirm BandLab captured the input.
BandLab Mobile
- Open the track you are recording.
- Tap Monitoring to turn it off.
- Record a brief test and replay it to check that the take was captured.
BandLab recommends headphones or earphones when recording to reduce backing-track bleed into the microphone. If your only goal is to stop hearing the live input, you do not need to buy an interface or change a subscription: try this track control first.
If you still hear yourself with Monitoring off
Work through the other possible signal paths before assuming the control failed:

- Check the interface. Look for a direct-monitor switch or input/playback blend knob and consult the interface maker’s manual. Disable the direct input-to-headphone path if you want silence. Where the hardware separates headphone level from recording gain, adjust monitoring without starving the recorded input.
- Rule out timeline playback. Mute or solo tracks and regions to find out whether the sound is a live input or an earlier take.
- Close other apps using audio. Check other browser tabs, recording apps, video-call software, voice assistants, and background applications that may be using the microphone.
- Check the headset and connection. Confirm its mute switch is off, reseat the connector, and test it on another device. BandLab includes these checks in its audio input troubleshooting guidance.
- Stop if you hear feedback. Stop playback and switch to headphones rather than continuing to monitor through speakers near the microphone. BandLab warns that speaker output can bleed into the microphone and may cause feedback.
Fix a delayed or echoing live signal
Latency is the time between making a sound and hearing the processed signal. Turning off Monitoring removes BandLab’s live software-monitor path, but if you need to hear yourself during a take, reduce the sources of delay.
Use wired headphones for tracking
BandLab says Bluetooth latency can range from about 34 to 300 ms, while wired headphone latency is typically around 5–10 ms. These are BandLab’s guidance figures, not guaranteed specifications for every device. Its Bluetooth troubleshooting article explains the issue. Wired headphones remove Bluetooth transmission as a source of delay, but cannot eliminate processing delay from a phone, computer, interface, or effects. If your device has no headphone jack, use a compatible wired adapter or interface rather than assuming Bluetooth will feel responsive enough for precise tracking.

Track with fewer effects
AutoPitch, pitch shifting, convolution reverb, and other processing can add delay. BandLab’s latency troubleshooting guidance identifies effects as a possible cause; its AutoPitch FAQ notes that pitch correction naturally adds some delay and describes a Low-Latency mode for real-time correction.
- For a clean take, turn off AutoPitch and heavy effects while recording, then add processing afterward.
- If you need to hear pitch correction while performing, try AutoPitch’s Low-Latency mode and wired headphones.
- Do not assume a vocal or live preset has no latency. If project playback glitches under processing load, BandLab suggests turning effects off or freezing tracks; a frozen track renders its effects for playback but must be unfrozen before you can edit them.
Run BandLab’s latency test
The test estimates recording-placement compensation; it does not necessarily make live monitoring feel instantaneous. Follow the platform-specific path below, and use the actual recording setup when testing.

Web Studio
- Create an Audio track and make sure track Monitoring is off.
- Open the main menu at the top left of Studio, then choose Tools > Latency Test.
- Unplug the headphones so the test sound can play through the speaker. Keep the room quiet and place the microphone close enough to hear the sound clearly.
- Click Start Test and follow the prompts. Leave Monitoring disabled during the test to avoid feedback.
Android
- Open Studio and tap the gear icon.
- Tap Latency Fix, then Retake Test, and follow the on-screen instructions.
- If needed, open Advanced settings to adjust latency compensation manually.
BandLab describes results in the 0–30 ms range as more manageable for headphone monitoring. It says results around 100–250 ms may occur on some devices; if monitoring remains distracting at that level, disabling it may be more practical.

iOS
BandLab says iOS automatically compensates for recording placement, but that does not remove the delay you may hear during live monitoring. Bluetooth can still make the monitored signal feel late.

If the recorded take lands late on the timeline
A take that is out of time after recording is a different issue from hearing a delayed signal in your headphones. BandLab’s latency guidance recommends testing with the recording setup connected and ensuring the microphone can detect the test sound clearly.
- Reconnect the headphones and external hardware used for the take, then retake the latency test under quiet conditions.
- If the test is still inaccurate, adjust latency compensation where your platform supports it.
- On Android or iOS, select the recorded region, open its three-dot menu, choose Shift, move the slider, and apply the change.
- If the offset is severe or inconsistent, re-recording may be quicker and more reliable than shifting the region.
Prevent bleed, feedback, and clipped input
Keep backing audio out of the microphone
Use headphones instead of speakers while recording. Closed-back headphones can help limit leakage from the backing track into a microphone, but they do not remove electronic latency. If feedback starts, stop playback rather than raising the monitor level.
Set input gain before recording
If the input meter reaches red, lower the physical gain on the microphone or interface. BandLab’s Studio audio troubleshooting guidance recommends reducing input gain rather than relying on the software track fader. The fader changes playback level; it cannot undo distortion already captured by an overloaded input.

Start with the free fixes: disable Monitoring if you do not want live sound, remove latency-heavy effects, and use wired headphones if you need to monitor. Any compatible wired headphones may be enough. An interface is useful if you need an XLR microphone connection, a guitar input, physical gain control, or a dedicated headphone output; it is not required just to switch BandLab Monitoring off. Interface compatibility with a phone depends on the device, operating system, adapter, power, and routing, and a hardware direct-monitor path may need separate adjustment.

If the problem continues
Test a new track with no effects and a different wired headset, then test the microphone outside BandLab to help separate a hardware issue from an app issue. Check the microphone connection and mute state using BandLab’s input troubleshooting steps. If you encounter crackling, connection problems, or an unusual chipmunk-like pitch, try Audio Safe Mode where available; BandLab says it can help with connection and crackling issues but may slightly increase latency. Update BandLab to the latest available version, and report the issue from Studio if it persists.
