iTunes did not disappear in one piece. Apple replaced the standalone iTunes app on modern Macs with Apple Music, Apple TV, and Apple Podcasts, while keeping the iTunes Store and the music people had bought or imported. On Windows, iTunes is still available, although Apple now recommends separate apps for music, video, and device management. The key to understanding the change is to separate the app from the store, your files, and a streaming subscription.
Five different things people mean by “iTunes”
The name became shorthand for several related but distinct parts of Apple’s media ecosystem. Knowing which one you mean makes it easier to find music, choose an app, or protect a collection.

What happened to iTunes?
iTunes began as a music organizer and store, then expanded into an all-purpose media hub for music, films, television, podcasts, audiobooks, and device syncing. As streaming became a central way to listen, Apple Music added a subscription catalog alongside purchases and personal files.

Announced in 2019 and released on October 7 of that year, Catalina replaced iTunes with Apple Music for music, Apple TV for video, and Apple Podcasts for podcasts. Finder took over computer-based iPhone and iPad backup, updating, restoring, and syncing. Windows followed a slower transition. Apple’s current guidance points users toward Apple Music, Apple TV, and Apple Devices. Legacy iTunes remains available for some users, including people who need its podcast or audiobook functions or whose PCs do not meet the requirements for the newer apps. Details can vary with Windows version, app version, and region. (Apple’s Windows app guidance.)
Apple Music is not the iTunes Store
Apple Music is a subscription service; the iTunes Store is a place to buy media. The Music app can bring several kinds of music together, which can make the distinction easy to miss. A song appearing in your library does not, by itself, tell you whether you own a file, bought a track, matched a recording, or have subscription access.

Apple describes Apple Music as offering access to more than 100 million songs, along with features such as offline listening, lossless audio, Spatial Audio, lyrics, recommendations, and Apple Music Classical. The catalog and features available to a particular listener can depend on region, plan, device, and compatible equipment. Apple also says an existing iTunes library remains accessible. (Apple Music.)

If you prefer to buy tracks instead of subscribing, Apple says the iTunes Store remains accessible for music purchases on Mac through the Music app. On Windows, the store may be hidden in the latest Apple Music app, and availability varies by country or region. On a modern Mac, connect an iPhone or iPad, open Finder, and select the device in the sidebar. Use its available tabs for syncing, backups, updates, or restores. On Windows, Apple assigns music management to Apple Music and device backup, updating, restoring, and manual syncing to Apple Devices. (Apple’s Windows app guidance.)
What happens to an old iTunes library?
An iTunes library has two important parts: the files themselves and the database that tracks where they are, along with playlists and other information. Changing apps does not turn a locally stored song into a subscription track. But a library can appear incomplete if the app opens the wrong database, the files have moved, or a connected external drive is missing.

- On a Mac: Music handles music, Apple TV handles films and television shows, and Apple Podcasts handles podcasts. Music includes music downloaded, purchased, or ripped from CDs. Finder handles device syncing.
- On Windows: Apple Music can work with music from an existing iTunes library, including purchases. Apple Devices handles iPhone and iPad management; iTunes may still be useful for specific legacy tasks.
Before migrating or reorganizing, locate the media folder and library database, and make a separate copy of the files. If you keep a library on an external drive, connect that drive before opening the app. Multiple old library copies can lead you to open the wrong one. Moving the media folder without updating its location can produce missing-file warnings. DRM-protected older purchases may also require account authorization.

iTunes Match is designed to make a personal music collection available across supported devices by matching eligible tracks or uploading music that is not matched. Apple’s guidance says users can access the library across devices when Sync Library is enabled. Apple uses related terms such as “iCloud Music Library” and “Sync Library”; labels and settings can vary by app and operating-system version. (Apple’s iTunes Match guidance.)
That can be useful for CD rips and music bought outside Apple’s store, but matching is not guaranteed to identify every recording correctly. Different editions—such as live, remastered, clean, explicit, or regional versions—may be confused, and damaged or poorly tagged files may not match as expected. Keep the original files. Sync Library is a way to synchronize access and library information, not a substitute for an independent backup.

Before turning on Sync Library or making substantial changes:
- Confirm the original files are present and make a separate backup, ideally on another drive.
- Check that you are signed in to the Apple Account associated with your purchases.
- Enable Sync Library on the devices you want to use and allow matching or uploading to finish.
- Check albums, playlists, artwork, ratings, and any rare or unusual recordings.
- Download critical music to the devices where you need it, where the app and rights allow.
- Do not delete the original library until you have verified the results.
What changes if you cancel Apple Music?
Keep three categories separate: iTunes Store purchases, personal local files, and music accessed through the Apple Music subscription catalog. A cancellation does not turn a store purchase into a subscription item, and it does not erase an original file you have kept locally. Subscription catalog downloads are not permanent purchases; access depends on an active subscription and the availability of the relevant content.
Cloud-library and matched-track behavior can depend on the service terms and current account state. If you are planning to cancel, preserve your original files, make a local backup, and export playlists where practical before changing your setup. Do not rely on Apple Music downloads or cloud synchronization as the only copy of music you care about. Check Apple’s current terms for the specific effect on your Sync Library and matched tracks.

Choose a setup that fits how you listen
- You mainly stream: Use Apple Music if its catalog, features, devices, and subscription terms work for you. You generally do not need iTunes Match just to stream.
- You have a large CD-rip collection: Keep a local master library and at least one independent backup. Consider Sync Library or iTunes Match for convenience across devices, not as preservation.
- You bought music from iTunes years ago: Sign in with the Apple Account used for those purchases and check your purchased music. The disappearance of the Mac iTunes app did not itself erase the store or purchases.
- You use Windows: Start with Apple Music for music and Apple Devices for iPhone or iPad management if your PC supports them. Keep iTunes if your workflow or system requires it.
- You want local control without cloud matching: Store and back up your files yourself, then sync devices manually where supported. This gives you more control but also makes organization and backup your responsibility.
- You are leaving Apple: Preserve the actual files first. Playlist-transfer tools may help rebuild lists, but a playlist transfer does not transfer ownership, audio files, or necessarily every rating and metadata field.
If something goes wrong
The library looks empty on a new Mac
- Check that you are signed in to the correct Apple Account, then check the Music library and purchased items.
- Locate the original media folder and library database; if files are missing, restore them from a backup before reorganizing.
- If you have more than one library copy, make sure Music is opening the intended one.
- If only cloud items are missing, allow time for synchronization and check Apple System Status before repeatedly switching Sync Library off and on.
Tracks show an exclamation mark or “file not found”
Reconnect the external drive if the library is stored there, then locate the original media folder. Use the app’s file-location or library-consolidation options carefully. Do not delete the library database until you have confirmed the files exist; restore from a clean backup if the library was reorganized incorrectly.
An iPhone will not sync from Windows
Use Apple Devices for device management rather than expecting Apple Music to handle backups or manual syncing. Update Apple Devices, check the cable and USB port, respond to any trust prompt, and confirm the correct music library is open in Apple Music. If the PC cannot run the newer apps, consult Apple’s current guidance on whether legacy iTunes is supported for that setup.
The practical rule
When a song appears in an Apple app, ask four questions: Do I own a file or only have access? Where is the file stored? Which app manages it? Is there a separate backup? Apple split iTunes into different apps and services, but those questions still determine whether your music is easy to find—and whether you can keep it safe.
