Annapoorani: The Goddess of Food, starring Nayanthara, was removed from Netflix in January 2024 after complaints about scenes involving religion, food and an alleged “love jihad” narrative. Netflix reportedly said the title was taken down at the licensor’s request; co-producer Zee Studios apologised to the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and said edits would be made. The available reporting does not establish that a court ordered the film banned.
What is Annapoorani about?
The Tamil film follows Annapoorani, a young woman from a conservative Brahmin family who wants to become a top chef. Her ambitions bring her into conflict with family expectations and traditions around cooking, including attitudes toward preparing and eating meat. Nayanthara stars; Nilesh Krishnaa wrote and directed the film. It opened in cinemas on December 1, 2023, and began streaming on Netflix on December 29. What triggered the complaints?
Hindu groups and other complainants objected to several elements of the story. Reports described a scene in which a Muslim character tells Annapoorani that Lord Ram ate meat during his exile; critics also objected to Annapoorani cooking and eating meat despite her family background. Another disputed sequence reportedly shows her wearing a hijab and offering namaz before preparing biryani for a cooking competition. Complainants also alleged that the film promoted “love jihad.” Those were allegations and interpretations advanced by critics, not established findings about the film or a court’s conclusions. Timeline: complaints, FIR and removal
- December 1, 2023: The film was released theatrically.
- December 29, 2023: It premiered on Netflix.
- January 6, 2024: Ramesh Solanki, founder of the Hindu IT Cell, publicly circulated a complaint, according to contemporaneous reports.
- January 8, 2024: An FIR was reported in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, following a complaint by the Hindu Sewa Parishad. Reports said it named cast and crew members, producers, Zee Studios personnel and Netflix India head Monika Shergill. A separate complaint was associated with Solanki in Mumbai; these should not be conflated into a single case.
- January 9–11, 2024: Zee Studios’ apology letter was dated January 9, and reports on January 11 confirmed the removal and apology to the VHP.
- January 18, 2024: Nayanthara issued a separate personal apology.
Coverage reported that the Jabalpur FIR invoked provisions including Section 153A of the Indian Penal Code. The FIR is a police allegation and investigative step, not a conviction or proof of wrongdoing by anyone named. The Indian Express reported the FIR and the people named.

What Netflix and Zee Studios said
Netflix’s reported explanation was that Annapoorani had been removed at the licensor’s request. That wording matters: it describes a platform-and-rightsholder decision, not an announcement that a court had ordered Netflix to take the film down.
Zee Studios, a co-producer, apologised to the VHP for hurt caused to Hindu and Brahmin religious sentiments and said there had been no intention to cause offence. The company said the film would stay off Netflix until objectionable portions were edited, with an edited version potentially released later. The apology was a corporate response to the controversy, not a judicial admission that the film broke the law. Cinema Express reported the apology and proposed edits.

Nayanthara’s separate apology
In her January 18 statement, Nayanthara apologised to anyone unintentionally hurt and said the film had been made with a sincere intention to promote empowerment and positive values. She also said the removal of a film that had received certification was unexpected. Her statement was distinct from Zee Studios’ earlier apology. The Indian Express reported her response.

Was Annapoorani banned, and can you watch it now?
The available reporting establishes that the film was removed from Netflix and that Zee Studios said edits would be made. It does not establish a court-ordered ban, nor does it confirm that the proposed edited version was later released or restored to Netflix. Streaming availability can vary by country and change over time, so check the relevant service’s current catalogue for your location rather than relying on the 2024 removal reports.

The distinction is important: a rightsholder-requested withdrawal from a streaming service is not the same thing as a formal government prohibition or a court ruling. The controversy involved complaints and an FIR, but the reports cited here do not show a final judicial finding that the film was unlawful.
