Start by setting the TV’s picture size to a pixel-preserving mode such as Fit to Screen, Screen Fit, Just Scan, or Original. If you’re watching a supported video, use the app’s Cast or AirPlay button—or the TV’s own app—instead of mirroring your whole phone. A tall phone screen and a widescreen TV have different shapes, so mirroring the complete phone display may leave bars. Removing them usually means cropping, stretching, or using a compatible feature that reformats the video.
What “full screen” can—and can’t—mean
There are two different things people often mean by full screen: showing the entire device display on the TV, or making a video fill the TV. They do not always produce the same result.
- No bars, no cropping: possible when the source image and TV output have compatible proportions, or when a supported app sends a video formatted for the TV.
- No bars by cropping: Zoom can fill the panel, but it cuts off part of the picture. Subtitles, faces, controls, or other edge details may disappear.
- No bars by stretching: Stretching changes the image’s proportions. Circles can look oval, and people or text can look distorted.
- Show the whole device screen: Screen mirroring reproduces the phone or computer display, including its shape and interface. Since phones are generally taller and narrower than 16:9 TVs, bars may be the correct way to show the full image without distortion.
- Watch a full-screen video: Direct casting or AirPlay from a compatible app can send the video to the TV rather than a copy of the whole phone screen. The result may fit better, but it still depends on the video’s format and the app.
There is no universal setting that removes bars while preserving every pixel when the source and TV have different proportions. The choice is to keep the full image, crop it, stretch it, or use a compatible video stream formatted for the display.

Identify the symptom first

Apple distinguishes overscan, where image extends beyond the screen, from underscan, where the image appears too small. Both can look like a scaling problem, but the fix is different: overscan calls for a fit mode, while underscan may need adjustment at the TV or source.

Try these fixes in order
- Check the input and connection. For HDMI, select the port the device is plugged into. Identify whether you are screen-mirroring, casting from an app, using AirPlay, or connecting by cable; their picture controls are not interchangeable.
- Set the TV to a neutral fit mode. Look in Picture, Display, Screen, or Aspect Ratio settings for Fit to Screen, Screen Fit, Just Scan, 1:1, Dot by Dot, Original, or a similar label. Start with a mode that preserves the full image—not Zoom or Stretch. Labels and availability vary by model.
- Check the source device’s display settings. A computer may let you choose the TV’s resolution or adjust underscan. A phone may have a mirroring aspect-ratio option, but many devices do not.
- Rotate the phone to landscape and use the video player’s full-screen control. This can reduce bars, but does not guarantee a 16:9 output; the phone, app, or video may use a different ratio.
- For video, try direct playback. Open the TV’s app or use the video app’s Cast or AirPlay control rather than Control Center’s or the phone’s general screen-mirroring control.
- Restart and retry. Restart the source and TV or receiver if the picture mode is not taking effect or the connection behaves inconsistently. Check for software updates if the problem persists.
- If wireless discovery fails, check the network. The devices may need to be on the same Wi-Fi network. Guest-network isolation or a VPN can interfere; temporarily disconnect a VPN while troubleshooting. Samsung includes VPN disconnection among its Smart View troubleshooting steps.
- Test another source. Try a photo or a different app. If that works, the issue may be specific to the original app or protected video rather than the TV’s overall display.
Find the right picture-size setting on the TV
Manufacturers use different labels, and a model may not offer every option. Search the TV’s Picture, Screen, Display, or Aspect Ratio menu for terms such as:
- Usually a good starting point: Fit to Screen, Screen Fit, Just Scan, 1:1, Dot by Dot, Original, or Auto.
- Use with care: 16:9, Wide, Zoom, Stretch, or Panorama. These may be appropriate for some sources, but a forced mode can crop or distort other content.
- Related settings: Picture Size, Aspect Ratio, Overscan, Underscan, Computer Mode, or PC Mode.
On many TVs, the setting applies to the current input or picture mode, so check it while the mirrored device is displayed. For example, LG advises checking Aspect Ratio and Screen Size when a picture is cut off or looks extended. The exact path differs across LG webOS generations and models.
If Zoom removes the bars but cuts off captions or image edges, switch back to a fit or original mode. A cropped image may look larger, but it is not showing more of the source.

Samsung Galaxy: Smart View
Smart View’s connected-device aspect-ratio control can enlarge a small mirrored image on supported Galaxy devices. Samsung says Smart View is not available on every Galaxy device, and menu labels and options vary with device and software version.
- Connect the phone or tablet and TV to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open Quick Settings, tap Smart View, and select the TV. Approve the connection on the TV if prompted.
- Open the Smart View controls and go to More options → Settings → Phone aspect ratio.
- If offered, select Full screen on connected device. If the phone asks to remember the choice, note that apps may restart when the mirroring format changes.
The option may not appear on every combination of phone, TV, and software. Samsung also says DRM-protected content cannot be mirrored through Smart View; for that video, use the service’s TV app or supported casting method. If Smart View cannot find the TV, confirm both are on the same network, approve any TV prompt, temporarily disconnect a VPN, and retry. Also check that the TV is not showing the phone in Multi View or another small-window mode. Samsung’s Multi View guidance explains how the TV can display content in a reduced layout.

iPhone or iPad: choose Screen Mirroring or AirPlay video
For the whole device screen, put the iPhone or iPad and the Apple TV, compatible AirPlay TV, or Mac on the same Wi-Fi network. Open Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring, select the receiver, and enter the on-screen passcode if requested. Apple’s AirPlay instructions cover this process.
For a movie or show, open it in a compatible app and tap the app’s AirPlay button, if present, then select the TV. This sends video playback rather than simply reproducing the tall phone display, and may give the TV a better-formatted picture. It is not supported by every video app; Apple recommends using the service’s TV app when AirPlay is unavailable.
If a Mac is connected to the TV and the image is too small, open System Settings → Displays, select the TV, and adjust resolution or Underscan if the control is available. If it is not, Apple recommends using the TV’s picture settings or changing the Mac’s resolution. See Apple’s overscan and underscan guidance.

Android and Google Cast
Android menus differ by manufacturer, and not every phone supports the same whole-screen mirroring feature. Treat app casting and screen mirroring as separate choices:
- Cast from an app: Open a compatible app, tap its Cast icon, select the TV or receiver, and play the content there. This is usually the better first choice for movies and shows.
- Mirror the phone: Use the phone’s Screen Cast or screen-mirroring feature, or Google Home where supported. This shows the phone interface and may leave bars on a widescreen TV.
Google documents casting from Google Cast-enabled apps; this is not the same as displaying an entire device screen. Do not assume every Android phone has a universal “full screen” switch or that direct casting is available in every app.

In Chrome, open the browser’s Cast command, choose the TV or receiver, and select the available source: a tab, a file, or the entire screen. Google documents whole-screen casting on supported Mac, Windows, and Chromebook setups in its Chrome casting guide. The options shown depend on the computer and receiver.

For Windows wireless display, Project or Connect to a wireless display controls depend on the Windows version, PC hardware, graphics drivers, and whether the TV supports Miracast. Compatibility is not universal. When available, duplicating mirrors the same display; extending gives the TV a separate desktop that you can arrange for the presentation or video.
Wired HDMI and USB-C: a useful fallback
A wired connection can avoid Wi-Fi discovery problems and may be preferable when wireless mirroring is unstable. Connect a computer’s HDMI output—or a compatible device’s USB-C-to-HDMI adapter—to the TV, then select the correct HDMI input. On a computer, choose duplicate or mirror for the same picture, or extend for a separate TV display. Set the computer’s output to the TV’s native resolution when possible.
Do not assume that a USB-C port supports video because it charges the device. USB-C video output and adapter compatibility depend on the specific phone, tablet, or computer. Many phone adapters transmit the phone’s display format; they do not necessarily convert it to 16:9. If the picture is cropped, check both the TV’s fit setting and the source output resolution. HDMI can improve connection stability, but cannot remove an aspect-ratio mismatch by itself.
Choose the connection for what you’re doing

Receiver capabilities differ too. Roku, for example, documents AirPlay for compatible Apple devices and limits screen mirroring to compatible Android and Windows devices; app casting is a separate workflow. Check the specific TV or receiver’s support before assuming it can mirror a particular device. See Roku’s screen-mirroring guidance and app-casting guidance.

If the picture still isn’t right
- Bars remain in fit mode: If you are mirroring a tall phone screen or unusually wide video, the bars may be necessary to show the complete image without distortion. For video, try direct app playback; otherwise decide whether cropping is acceptable.
- The picture is cropped after changing a setting: Turn off Zoom or forced Wide mode and return to Fit, Original, Auto, or an equivalent. Check subtitles and edges as well as the centre of the picture.
- The picture is distorted: Undo Stretch or a forced aspect ratio. Choose a setting that preserves the source proportions.
- Video is black while controls still show: The app may restrict screen mirroring because of content protection. Use the service’s TV app or an explicitly supported Cast/AirPlay route. Samsung identifies DRM protection as a Smart View limitation, and Apple notes that some video apps do not support AirPlay.
- The TV or receiver is not found: Confirm that both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network, not isolated from one another by guest-network settings. Check TV prompts and receiver settings; temporarily turn off a VPN and retry. A shared network name alone does not guarantee discovery.
- The image is unexpectedly small: Check for underscan, the TV’s picture-size mode, and a reduced-window or Multi View layout. On a Mac, inspect Displays for an Underscan control; on a TV, look for a fit mode.
- Wireless picture stutters: Restart the devices, check for software updates, and test again. If the hardware supports it, HDMI is a practical alternative. A cable will not fix cropping caused by the selected picture mode.
Quick decision path
- Watching a movie or show? Use the TV’s native app or the video app’s Cast/AirPlay control first.
- Need the entire phone or computer screen? Mirror it and expect bars when its shape differs from the TV.
- Picture has bars? Set the TV to a pixel-preserving fit mode. If bars remain, choose between keeping the whole image and cropping it; don’t stretch by default.
- Edges are missing? Disable Zoom or overscan and select Fit, Original, Just Scan, or the equivalent.
- Video is black but the interface works? Try the service’s TV app or supported casting instead of mirroring.
- Connection is unstable? Try a compatible HDMI connection, checking source resolution and USB-C video-output support where relevant.
