Yes—Netflix downloads are limited, but there is no single cap that applies to every account. As of August 18, 2026, ad-free plans allow up to 100 active downloads per supported device; ad-supported plans allow 15 downloads per supported device per calendar month. Your plan also limits how many devices can store downloads, and some titles have their own annual download limits or expiration dates.
Storage on your phone or tablet is a separate limit. The right fix depends on which cap you have hit.

Netflix download limits at a glance

Netflix’s download guidance, ad-supported plan download rules, and download-device management instructions describe different restrictions. Treat them as separate checks rather than one account-wide number.
How many downloads can you have on each plan?
Netflix’s current U.S.-dollar plan table lists the following download-device capacity. Plan names, prices, availability, taxes, bundles, and third-party billing can differ by country or change over time.

These device counts are distinct from the per-device download limits. Netflix says ad-free plans can have up to 100 active downloads on a supported device, while the ad-supported plan has a monthly allowance of 15 downloads per supported device. A season is not necessarily one download: episodes are downloaded separately.
The Standard plan does not add download-device capacity over Standard with ads in the cited U.S. table. Premium’s additional download devices may suit a household with several people downloading on separate devices, but may be unnecessary for someone who saves shows on one phone. Check your local Netflix plan details before changing plans.

Downloads are not the same as account devices or simultaneous streams
An account may be used on devices without those devices all being allowed to store downloads. The plan’s download-device allowance is also separate from its limit on how many screens can watch at once. Netflix explains the distinction between account devices and simultaneous viewing in its device and household guidance.
Why Netflix says “Download Max Reached”
On an ad-supported plan, this message may mean you have used the monthly allowance—not that your device is full. Netflix allows 15 downloads per supported device per calendar month on these plans, with the allowance resetting on the first day of the next calendar month. Deleting a saved title can free storage, but Netflix describes this as a monthly allowance; do not assume deletion immediately restores a download.

You can wait for the reset or stream the title while connected to the internet. If you regularly need more downloads, compare available ad-free plans in your country. Changing plans will not fix unrelated problems such as insufficient device storage or a title’s own licensing restriction.
Why Netflix says downloads are on too many devices
This usually means the account has reached its plan’s limit on devices that contain downloads. An old phone or tablet you no longer use can still occupy a slot until its downloads are removed or the device is removed from download management.

- Sign in to Netflix in a browser and open Manage Download Devices from the account area.
- Review the devices listed as using download slots.
- Select Remove device for one you no longer need. This removes that device’s Netflix downloads and frees its download-device slot.
On mobile, Netflix documents this route: open the app, tap My Netflix, tap the profile name at the top, tap Account, then under Devices choose Mobile download devices. Select Remove device. Labels can vary slightly by device, app version, and language. Removing a download device does not necessarily remove that device from every other kind of account use.
Why a particular movie or episode will not download
- It is not available for offline viewing. Not every Netflix title has a download option. Availability can depend on rights, region, and title-specific conditions; being a Netflix Original does not guarantee that every title is downloadable. Look for the download icon. - The title has reached its annual limit. Some titles can only be downloaded a limited number of times per year per account. Netflix may show “Yearly Download Limit Reached” or error code NQL.22006. Netflix’s suggested options are to stream the title online or download a different one; the yearly number is not a universal figure that applies to all titles. - The existing download expired. Expiration periods vary. Re-downloading may require an internet connection, and may not be possible if the title is no longer available for download.
- The device or app is not supported for downloads. Streaming on a device does not mean Netflix downloads are supported there.
- The device is short on storage. This is a local space problem, not an account quota. Netflix’s download troubleshooting guidance covers storage-related failures.
How to delete downloads and free capacity
Delete one title
- Open Downloads in the Netflix app.
- Select the movie or episode.
- Tap its download-status icon and choose Delete Download.
Delete all downloads on the device
- Open My Netflix, then App Settings.
- Under Downloads, choose Delete All Downloads.
- Confirm.
Deleting downloads can free device storage and may clear space under an active-download ceiling. It does not necessarily restore an ad-supported monthly allowance or reset a title-specific annual limit. If storage remains low, remove other files or apps, or lower download quality for future titles if that setting is available.

How long do Netflix downloads last?
Downloads are temporary access through Netflix, not permanent purchases. They expire after a period of time, and the applicable period varies by title and licensing terms. Netflix does not state one duration—such as 30 days—that applies to every download. Check the message shown for the individual title in the app.
An expired download may need an internet connection to renew or download again. If Netflix no longer offers the title for download, you may not be able to save it again. Canceling a Netflix account deletes downloads from the device; if you restart membership, you will need to download titles again. For general details, see Netflix’s download instructions.
Which devices support Netflix downloads?
Netflix lists Android phones and tablets, iPhone and iPad, Amazon Fire tablets, and Google Chromebooks with the Google Play Store installed as devices that support downloads. The latest Netflix app and a compatible operating-system version may be required. Netflix downloads are not available on Windows devices, even though Netflix can be streamed through supported Windows platforms or browsers. Downloaded titles play from the Netflix app on the device that saved them. You can watch without an internet connection while the download remains valid, but you need to remain signed in to Netflix. Netflix says downloads can be viewed from any profile on that device, subject to profile controls such as Kids-profile maturity restrictions; it does not publish a simple, universal separate download quota for each profile.
How to avoid running into a limit
- Before a trip, download only the films and episodes you expect to watch; on ad-supported plans, budget within the monthly allowance.
- Use Wi-Fi to download and confirm that the titles show as available offline before leaving.
- Delete episodes after watching them to reclaim storage and active-download space.
- Check free device storage before starting a large batch of downloads.
- Check for a download icon on each title rather than assuming an entire series is available.
- Review download devices if you have replaced or stopped using a phone or tablet.
- Do not rely on a title with a yearly download restriction or an uncertain expiration as your only offline option.
Clearing Android app data removes Netflix downloads and signs you out; reinstalling Netflix on iPhone or iPad also deletes downloads. Avoid either step unless you are prepared to download your titles again.
