“Rubber Soul, but it’s Motown” is a real online project, not a newly discovered Beatles recording. Uploaded to YouTube by Kail Tescar on December 10, 2024, it presents all 14 songs from the standard U.K. Rubber Soul sequence as unofficial, AI-generated or AI-assisted Motown-inspired performances. The lyrics come from Beatles compositions; the new arrangements and performances are credited to “The Ai Overlords.”
It is not an official Beatles or Motown release, and there is no evidence that Apple Corps, Universal Music Group, Motown, or any surviving Beatle authorized or participated in it.
Where to hear it
The complete project is available in a roughly 41-minute YouTube upload. Its description calls the tracks “alternate reality recordings” and says they are not covers. The sequence follows the familiar 14-track U.K. album:

What actually changed?
The headline says AI “transformed” Rubber Soul, but that can sound like a conventional remix of the Beatles’ master tapes. The available evidence does not support that description. Reporting indicates that the project retains the Beatles’ lyrics while generating or substantially reconstructing new music, performances and arrangements. Many melodies are reportedly different from the originals, although “Norwegian Wood” has been heard as retaining more of its familiar melodic identity.
The safest description is an AI-generated alternate-reality album that reimagines Beatles songs with 1960s soul conventions. Those conventions include:
- Prominent, melodic bass grooves
- Punchier backbeats, tambourine and handclap-like accents
- Horn-section punctuation and orchestral color
- Soul-style vocal phrasing
- Call-and-response backing vocals and group harmonies
- A more dance-oriented rhythmic feel
Coverage from BGR compares the broad sonic territory with acts such as the Temptations, the Supremes and Marvin Gaye. That is a listening comparison, not a claim that Motown artists or the Funk Brothers performed on the tracks.
Why Rubber Soul makes a convincing source
The idea works because the 1965 album was already a meeting point for folk-rock, pop and American soul influences. Contemporary discussion of the record notes connections to Motown and Stax as well as Bob Dylan and the Byrds. Paul McCartney’s melodic bass parts, the Beatles’ tightly blended harmonies and several songs’ strong rhythmic foundations give a generative system useful material to exaggerate.

That does not mean the Beatles were secretly trying to make a Motown album. It means the source songs contain enough compatible ingredients for a modern genre-transfer experiment to sound plausible.
A listening guide to the most revealing tracks
“Drive My Car”
The original already has a propulsive groove, making it an obvious opening demonstration. Emphasizing bass, tambourine, repetitive drums and horn punctuation makes the chorus feel more overtly dance-oriented without erasing the song’s basic identity. It is a useful example of how arrangement can change genre perception.
“Norwegian Wood”
This is the project’s important edge case. Listeners and coverage have found more of the original melodic character here than on many other tracks. That familiarity could result from retained melodic material, the lyric’s cadence and phrase lengths, listener expectation, or a mixture of all three. The available material does not establish that the original melody was copied directly.
“Think for Yourself”
Historically, this is one of the strongest bridges between Rubber Soul and the Motown premise because the song is already associated with soul-influenced rhythm. Its placement lets listeners compare an existing Beatles engagement with soul ideas against a much more explicit genre makeover.

“Nowhere Man”
The layered harmonies invite a group-vocal treatment. The comparison is especially revealing because Beatles harmony is generally blended into the arrangement, while a Motown-inspired version can make backing-vocal responses more conspicuous. It also highlights the difference between an actual human ensemble and generated vocal textures.
“Michelle”
The original is intimate and French-inflected. A larger soul arrangement—with horns, backing voices and a broader dynamic scale—changes its cultural and emotional framing. BGR identifies it as one of the tracks whose character shifts noticeably in the reimagining.
“The Word”
Repeated vocal phrases and emphatic rhythm make this song well suited to call and response. It shows how an AI system can reproduce recognizable genre markers—groove, instrumentation and vocal behavior—without recreating a specific historical recording.
“In My Life”
This track tests whether the new setting adds an interpretation or merely applies a stylistic filter. A slower, orchestrated soul reading can preserve its reflective center, but it may also move the song toward the conventions of a polished ballad.

“Run for Your Life”
The song’s threatening lyric creates friction with the polished, upbeat associations many listeners have with classic Motown. That contrast is a reminder that changing genre does not remove the source material’s darker themes.
What is known—and what is not
Verified details include the project’s title, creator, December 10, 2024 upload date, 14-song sequence, YouTube location and “The Ai Overlords” credit. The description and contemporary coverage present it as an alternate-reality AI experiment.
Not established by the available sources:
- The name of the AI model or commercial service
- Whether the original Beatles master recordings were used as inputs
- Whether any vocal is a clone of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison or Ringo Starr
- Whether the creator trained a model on Beatles or Motown recordings
- Whether any rights holder approved or licensed the project
- Whether it is commercially available on licensed streaming services
Perceived resemblance to a Beatle voice is not proof of voice cloning, and a recognizable melody is not proof that an original master was processed.

Motown was a record label, business, studio system, roster and production culture—not simply a collection of musical sounds. In this context, “Motown” is shorthand for familiar 1960s pop-soul features. The upload was not made by Motown, and the name does not establish involvement by the label’s artists, writers or musicians.

How this differs from official Beatles machine-learning work
The Beatles’ official Rubber Soul special edition is announced for October 2, 2026, with new mixes by Giles Martin and Sam Okell, stereo and mono versions, Capitol U.S. material, Dolby Atmos, sessions and demos. Its de-mixing technology is intended to separate and clarify elements from the original four-track tapes while preserving the historical recordings.

This distinction also separates the project from “Now and Then,” where machine learning helped isolate and restore elements of an existing Beatles-related recording. Restoration and generative recreation are different processes.
Copyright, authorship and the central objection
“It is not really The Beatles” is a fair objection. The lyrics and compositions originate with Beatles songwriting, but the performances, arrangements, vocal presentation and possibly many melodies do not come from the band.
The project’s rights position cannot be determined from the available materials. Potentially relevant rights include the musical compositions and lyrics, sound recordings, adaptations, performer identity and voice likeness, trademarks, and platform takedown rules. Its continued presence on YouTube does not prove that it has been licensed, nor does the available evidence establish that it is unlawful.

It is a present-day creator’s speculative genre exercise—interesting as a demonstration of generative music, but not a lost recording or an alternate music-history document.
Bottom line
Rubber Soul, but it’s Motown is best understood as an inventive, unofficial AI music experiment. It uses Beatles lyrics and song concepts to imagine bass-led grooves, horns, group vocals and polished soul arrangements. It can be compelling precisely because Rubber Soul already contains traces of American soul, but it should not be called an official Beatles album, a Motown release or a conventional remix of the original masters.
