The Roku Sports Channel is a free, ad-supported 24/7 sports channel inside The Roku Channel. It launched on August 12, 2024, and Roku’s current channel inventory still lists it. You don’t need a separate sports subscription or a Roku-branded device to watch, but the channel is not a free pass to every live game: schedules and rights vary, and some sports listings in Roku’s broader Sports experience require paid services.
What is the Roku Sports Channel?
It is a linear FAST channel—short for free ad-supported streaming television. In practical terms, it runs a scheduled stream around the clock, supported by advertising, rather than asking viewers to choose every program from an on-demand library. The Roku Sports Channel is part of The Roku Channel’s free live-TV offering, not a separate paid sports app.
Roku announced the channel for August 12, 2024, describing it as a free, ad-supported 24/7 destination. The launch announcement named MLB programming, The Rich Eisen Show, Formula E races and other sports content. Those are launch-era examples, not a promise that each remains on the schedule today. What can you watch?
The channel is intended for a mix of sports programming, which can include selected live events, studio shows, replays, highlights and other sports features. Its opening slate included MLB content, The Rich Eisen Show and Formula E. Because FAST schedules and sports rights rotate, the opening lineup should not be treated as the current schedule or as a guarantee of future live events.

Roku’s MLB programming illustrates why it helps to check the details. In 2024, Roku and MLB announced free Sunday Leadoff games on The Roku Channel, along with an MLB Zone, highlights, replays and a programmed MLB channel. The announced Sunday Leadoff schedule ran from May 19 through September 15, 2024; it was a season-specific arrangement, not evidence that every MLB game—or a permanent set of games—is free on the Roku Sports Channel. MLB’s announcement describes that 2024 agreement.
How to watch the Roku Sports Channel
You do not have to buy a Roku player or Roku TV. The Roku Channel is offered on Roku devices and on selected non-Roku platforms, including its website, iOS and Android apps, Amazon Fire TV, Google TV and Samsung TVs. The availability of The Roku Channel generally does not guarantee that every individual live channel is present on every device or in every country. On a Roku player or Roku TV
- Open The Roku Channel or the Live TV area from the Home screen.
- Open the live-TV guide and browse its Sports category, or search for Roku Sports Channel.
- Select the channel to start streaming if it is available in your region and on your device.
Menu names and placement can vary by device and Roku OS version. Roku’s guidance also points viewers to the Live TV Zone from the Home screen for free live channels.

Open The Roku Channel website or a supported Roku Channel app, go to live TV, then search or browse the Sports category. If the channel does not appear, check the platform’s channel availability and your location; support for The Roku Channel does not necessarily mean identical live-channel access everywhere.

Is it really free? Do you need cable?
The Roku Sports Channel itself is free with ads. No separate Roku Sports Channel subscription or cable package is required for access to the channel. The trade-off is advertising, and your device or platform may require you to install The Roku Channel or sign in. Roku advertises more than 500 free live-TV channels on The Roku Channel, while noting that other content and services may require subscriptions. Check Roku’s live-TV information for its current access details.
“Free sports” does not mean every game is free. Roku’s broader Sports experience is a discovery hub that brings together live and upcoming games from multiple providers, including The Roku Channel, antenna TV and subscription services. A game tile may lead to a paid app or require a separate subscription. Open the event listing and confirm its provider and any access requirement before settling in. Roku Sports Channel versus Roku’s Sports experience
These names refer to different things. The Roku Sports Channel is one scheduled channel in The Roku Channel’s live-TV lineup. The broader Sports experience is a discovery interface for finding sports across different providers. It can surface free channels alongside subscription services; seeing an event in that interface does not make it free.

Roku’s channel inventory lists Roku Sports Channel alongside channels such as MLB, NFL Channel, Formula 1 Channel, Swerve Sports, X Games TV and The Rich Eisen Show. Treat that as evidence of available channel options, not a guarantee of identical schedules on every device.

Who should watch it?
It is a good fit if you want no-cost sports programming to put on in the background, enjoy studio shows and replays, or want selected live events without signing up for a traditional cable package. It can complement an antenna or a paid service.
It is a poor fit as your only sports source if you need every game from a particular team, a full season of league coverage, regional sports networks, DVR features, fewer ads or guaranteed access to a specific event. For a particular matchup, verify the broadcaster and whether a subscription is needed rather than assuming the Roku Sports Channel carries it.
The Bottom Line
The Roku Sports Channel is a genuinely free, ad-supported way to watch scheduled sports programming through The Roku Channel, and Roku still lists it in its channel inventory. It is best treated as a useful supplement—not a replacement for a paid sports package or a guarantee that a particular game is free.
