Short answer: YouTube’s “more ads soon” headline was about Pause ads—static image advertisements that can appear beside a paused video on connected TVs. YouTube said in September 2024 that the format had been widely rolled out to advertisers; Google’s current documentation still describes it as an active format. It adds another place for advertising to appear, but does not by itself prove that every viewer now gets more pre-roll or mid-roll commercials.
What a YouTube Pause ad looks like
A Pause ad is a static image placement shown alongside a video after a viewer pauses it. It is not a conventional video commercial that automatically starts playing over the paused scene. Google says it appears on connected-TV screens after a pause when the viewer has not interacted with the screen for five seconds; its documentation also describes the placement as appearing 10 seconds after pausing. In practical terms, it is not meant to pop up the instant you press pause. The ad can remain visible until you resume playback or dismiss it. Google’s Pause ad documentation has the current format and eligibility details.
This is a pause-screen placement, not an ad that necessarily appears while YouTube is closed or no video is loaded. A brief pause may end before an ad appears, and even an eligible session is not guaranteed to receive one: device, country, campaign availability, and ad delivery can all matter.

Google currently documents Pause ads for connected-TV devices in selected countries, including the United States. “Connected TV” is the important qualification: do not assume the same format appears on an iPhone, Android phone, tablet, desktop browser, or every console and smart-TV app. Nor does TV eligibility mean every viewer, video, or pause will show an ad.

Availability can vary by market and viewing setup. Someone using YouTube on a TV may have a different experience from that same person watching on a phone, and the official documentation does not establish that every connected-TV brand, app, profile, or region will receive the format in the same way.
Does this mean YouTube has increased all its ads?
Not necessarily. Pause ads create an additional advertising surface. They are distinct from ads that play before, during, or after a video. The available evidence does not show that YouTube universally increased the number or length of ordinary ad breaks to match this rollout, and YouTube has not confirmed that Pause ads come with fewer conventional ads elsewhere.

YouTube already offers a range of formats, including skippable and non-skippable in-stream ads, short bumper ads, in-feed video ads, Shorts ads, and Masthead placements. Mid-rolls are another separate format: creators can manage mid-roll placement on eligible videos longer than eight minutes. It is also useful to separate YouTube-served ads from sponsorships read by a creator or product placements built into a documentary or other video. A Pause ad is a platform advertising placement; an on-camera sponsor message is part of the video itself.

Why add advertising to the pause screen?
YouTube and Google present the format as a way to show advertising during a natural break rather than interrupting playback. For advertisers, it creates another opportunity to reach people watching on large screens, and the image can stay visible while a viewer has paused. Google’s buying documentation lists the format in its reservation-campaign workflow.
That is the platform’s rationale, not evidence that viewers prefer the change. For a viewer who pauses to read subtitles, answer the phone, or step away, a commercial pause screen can still feel like an intrusion. And “less interruptive than a video ad” does not mean “no additional advertising.”

How the rollout happened
- 2023: YouTube began testing Pause ads, according to reporting on the company’s statements.
- September 2024: YouTube said the format had been widely rolled out to advertisers after what it characterized as strong advertiser and viewer response. That response claim is YouTube’s characterization, not independent proof of audience preference. Contemporaneous coverage reported the announcement.
- August 2026: Google’s documentation continues to describe Pause ads as an active connected-TV format with eligibility and creative rules.
So the original “soon” framing is outdated: this is not simply a future change announced for 2026. The format was already being offered to advertisers in 2024 and remains documented now.
Can you avoid them?
If an ad appears, Google says it remains until you dismiss it or resume playback. YouTube Premium is YouTube’s official ad-free viewing option; see YouTube Premium and the membership help page. The cited membership information describes an ad-free YouTube experience generally, but does not spell out every Pause-ad implementation for every country, device, and app. Do not treat Premium as a guarantee that creator-read sponsorships or product placements inside videos disappear.

Switching devices may change which ad formats are available, but it is not a reliable way to eliminate ads. Avoid assuming a third-party blocker will work consistently: the available evidence does not support a dependable configuration, and such tools may affect playback or stop working as the service changes.
What this means for creators and advertisers
For advertisers, Pause ads are a connected-TV placement rather than a general-purpose setting for every YouTube campaign. Google describes a reservation workflow through Campaigns → New campaign → YouTube reach, views, and engagements → Video → Reservation → Premier reach → Pause ads, followed by uploading or selecting an image, adding a final URL and headline, previewing, and saving. The documented creative uses a static image; the precise campaign and buying availability depends on Google’s current eligibility rules. Consult Google’s setup documentation for current details.
For creators, the existence of Pause ads does not establish that every ad shown while a video is paused directly increases that creator’s revenue, nor does the available documentation support a specific revenue-share claim for this format. Eligible creators can monetize videos through YouTube’s broader advertising system, but a particular impression and its allocation depend on platform arrangements.
