Yes. Prime Video can deliver stereo, Dolby Digital Plus 5.1, and—on selected titles, plans, devices, and audio systems—Dolby Atmos. It is not a universal entitlement: the result depends on the title, region and subscription, playback app, HDMI path, and whether your TV, soundbar, or AV receiver can decode and pass the signal.
What “surround sound” means on Prime Video
Stereo (2.0) uses left and right channels. 5.1 uses left, right, center, subwoofer/LFE, left surround, and right surround channels—the standard layout Amazon identifies as L-R-C-LFE-LS-RS in its delivery specification (Amazon Video Central). Streaming services commonly carry 5.1 as Dolby Digital Plus.
Dolby Atmos adds object-based sound and height information. Streaming Atmos is often carried inside a Dolby Digital Plus stream, but it still requires an Atmos-enabled title, app, device, connection, and decoder. A receiver showing “Dolby Surround,” “Multichannel,” or a similar mode may be upmixing stereo or 5.1 rather than receiving the original mix.
Does every Prime Video title include 5.1 or Atmos?
No. Audio varies by title, edition, country, app, and device. A 4K or UHD badge describes video resolution, not audio; UHD does not guarantee 5.1 or Atmos. Open the title’s detail page and playback audio menu, where available, to see the tracks offered. During playback, open the audio or language control and select the available surround track. Amazon notes that track availability differs across catalog titles and devices (Prime Video audio-track guidance).

Is Dolby Atmos included with every Prime subscription?
Do not assume that all Prime memberships, standalone Prime Video plans, add-on channels, and ad-free upgrades have identical benefits. Dolby’s Prime Video page currently says Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos require an Ad-Free Plan, compatible content, and compatible equipment. That information was checked for the United States on August 18, 2026, and Dolby labels its displayed information as accurate as of July 2025; rules can differ by market or change (Dolby’s Prime Video information). The requirement should therefore be verified in your local account and title listing. Ordinary 5.1 may work without Atmos-capable equipment or a plan that includes Atmos.

Equipment and connection requirements
For genuine 5.1 you need a title with a 5.1 track, a compatible Prime Video app/device, a TV or soundbar/AV receiver that accepts it, suitable HDMI cabling, correct output settings, and speakers arranged for 5.1. Atmos adds requirements for every link: Atmos-capable app/device, plan and title, HDMI path, TV pass-through (if used), Atmos decoder, and—if you expect physical height effects—height speakers. Dolby describes the dependency on plan, content, TV, soundbar or receiver, and playback device on its Prime Video page.
Preferred wiring
Streaming device → HDMI input on soundbar or AV receiver → HDMI output to TVThis avoids many TV downmix and pass-through problems. An alternative is:

Streaming device → TV HDMI input → TV ARC/eARC → soundbar or receivereARC is preferable for modern multichannel formats. Ordinary ARC is more limited. Apple recommends direct connection to an Atmos-capable soundbar or receiver where possible and warns that Apple TV 4K’s high-bandwidth Atmos format does not work over ordinary ARC (Apple’s setup guidance). Roku recommends a surround-capable TV or routing through an HDMI soundbar/receiver (Roku support).
Platform setup
Fire TV
- Open Settings.
- Choose Display & Sounds (or the equivalent audio section), then Audio.
- Set surround output to Best Available or the automatic equivalent; do not force stereo.
- Confirm the TV, soundbar, or receiver accepts Dolby audio.
- Play a title advertising 5.1 or Atmos and inspect the receiver’s input display.
Menu names vary by Fire OS version and TV manufacturer. Amazon’s developer documentation explains that Fire TV uses Dolby capability detection and an external-surround setting for AC-3/E-AC-3 output (Amazon developer guidance).

Roku
- Open Settings > Audio.
- Choose automatic, pass-through, or the highest compatible option.
- Use a Premium High-Speed HDMI cable where appropriate.
- Test a known 5.1/Atmos title and verify the soundbar or AVR display.
Roku states that compatible devices can pass Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus, with Atmos pass-through on some models. Exact labels differ by player and Roku OS version.

Apple TV 4K
- Connect Apple TV 4K directly to the Atmos soundbar or receiver when possible, then connect that device to the TV.
- Go to Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format.
- Under Immersive Audio, confirm Dolby Atmos is available and enabled.
- If Atmos is missing, check HDMI connections and every device’s capabilities.
Smart-TV apps
Use the TV’s digital-audio output set to automatic, pass-through, or bitstream rather than PCM/stereo. Because built-in apps can have different codec and pass-through behavior, test the same title on a dedicated Fire TV, Roku, or Apple TV if results are inconsistent.

How to verify that surround is really working
- Confirm the title exposes a 5.1 or Atmos track.
- Check the incoming-signal display on the AVR or soundbar: “Dolby Digital Plus 5.1” indicates discrete 5.1; an Atmos indicator means Atmos metadata was detected.
- “PCM,” “Stereo,” or a generic virtual-surround mode does not prove that Prime Video supplied multichannel audio.
- A receiver may display Dolby Digital Plus without prominently saying Atmos; check whether its Atmos indicator or information screen identifies the object metadata.
Upmixing can widen stereo or add sound to more speakers, but it cannot recreate an original Atmos mix.
Troubleshooting by symptom

Should you buy a dedicated streaming device?
It can help when an older TV app has limited codecs or unreliable pass-through. A current Fire TV, supported Roku, or Apple TV 4K may provide more predictable updates and audio controls. It will not overcome a stereo-only soundbar, a TV that cannot pass the signal, or a plan/title without Atmos. For a simple upgrade, an Atmos soundbar with HDMI eARC and, ideally, HDMI input/pass-through is easier than an AVR. For genuine discrete surround and future expansion, an AV receiver with appropriately placed speakers offers clearer status information and upgradeability. Check exact model specifications before buying; current prices are not included here.
Bottom line
Prime Video supports surround sound—up to Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 broadly across supported platforms and Dolby Atmos on selected titles and compatible setups. Start with the title and plan, then verify the exact device, HDMI/ARC/eARC route, and decoder. Trust the receiver’s incoming-signal readout, not merely a “surround” listening-mode label.
