Apple announced a Japan-only “Vertical Reading Manga” section in Apple Books on April 14, 2023. It offered mobile-first, vertically scrolling comics through the app’s Manga Store tab on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. This was a curated Japanese storefront launch—not a worldwide Apple Books webtoon service. The details below describe Apple’s 2023 announcement; they do not establish that the same catalog, prices, or storefront layout remains in place today.
What Apple added to Apple Books
Apple’s official category name was tate-yomi manga (縦読みマンガ), literally “vertical-reading manga.” Unlike conventional manga volumes laid out as pages to turn, these comics are designed for digital reading by scrolling down a screen. They are typically made for mobile use and often presented in color.
The format overlaps with what many English-language readers call webtoons, but the terms are not exact synonyms: “webtoon” can describe a wider publishing format and ecosystem. Apple framed its launch as a dedicated vertical-manga page inside the Japanese Apple Books Manga Store, not as a new global comics platform. Apple’s April 2023 announcement described the comics as digital-native works optimized for smooth vertical scrolling.
Where it launched—and how readers found it
Apple said the page was available in Japan through Apple Books on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The stated route was to open Apple Books, select the Manga Store tab, and choose the Vertical Reading Manga page. AppleInsider’s contemporaneous report also described the launch as Japan-only and said Apple had not announced availability in the United States or other territories. How the launch episode model worked
Apple described ongoing series as receiving new episodes daily. At launch, the first five episodes were free for Apple-exclusive series, while other vertical-manga series offered three free opening episodes. Apple listed the named exclusive titles at ¥50 per episode. These were launch terms announced in April 2023, not verified current prices or a guarantee that every title used the same price.

The episode model differs from buying a collected manga volume: the cost can accumulate as a reader follows a long-running serial. Apple’s announcement did not establish a flat-rate vertical-manga subscription, bundled episode pricing, or whether all titles shared the listed rate.

These were examples, not necessarily a complete catalog. Apple said selected titles were produced by South Korean studio KENAZ and had domestic-exclusive distribution in Japan. “Exclusive” here describes the distribution announced for Japan; it does not establish worldwide ownership or exclusivity of the underlying intellectual property. Apple’s 2023 release described KENAZ as having 180 creators and producing nearly 100 vertical-manga series a year. Those are figures attributed to Apple at launch, not current company statistics.

Was Apple Books a subscription?
Apple’s Japan Books page describes the app as free to use, with books and audiobooks sold individually and no subscription required for ordinary Apple Books purchases. Separately, the 2023 vertical-manga announcement specified per-episode pricing for the named launch exclusives. The general Books page does not restate the billing terms for every vertical-manga title, so it should not be read as confirmation of every title’s current purchase model. Can readers in the United States or elsewhere get it?
Apple announced the page for Japan, and the contemporaneous coverage found no announced U.S. or international rollout. A U.S. Apple Books storefront should not be assumed to contain the Japan page or its titles. The launch reporting does not establish whether the page is available unchanged in 2026; check the relevant Apple Books storefront for current availability.

Changing an Apple Account’s country or region, traveling, or using a VPN is not a reliable promise of access. Storefront availability can depend on account region, payment and licensing arrangements, and the Japanese-language nature of the content. Apple’s 2023 announcement did not provide an international-access workaround, and region changes can affect account services and purchases. Do not treat a location change as a guaranteed way around regional restrictions.

How this differs from dedicated webtoon apps
Apple Books is a general-purpose bookstore and reading app with a manga storefront; Apple’s launch added curated vertical comics and selected Japan-exclusive distribution to that environment. Dedicated manga or webtoon platforms may be built more specifically around serialized releases, discovery, and community features. Conventional ebook stores and physical editions, meanwhile, are often better suited to collected, page-based manga. The 2023 Apple announcement did not claim that Books included every title found on other services or that it was the leading webtoon platform.

Why the launch was limited to Japan
Apple did not give a definitive explanation for the regional limit. Local language rights, licensing, publishing partnerships, payment arrangements, and Apple’s established Japanese manga storefront are plausible industry factors, but they are analysis rather than Apple’s stated rationale. The practical point is that a title’s presence in Apple Books does not make it available in every country’s store.
What can be confirmed today
Apple’s current Japan Books landing page describes Apple Books as a place to find, buy, and read ebooks and audiobooks, and says a subscription is not required for the general service. It does not independently restate the 2023 vertical-manga launch, its current catalog, the episode prices, or whether the same storefront placement continues. Apple’s announcement-linked storefront URL remains identifiable as a Japan webtoon grouping, but its browser response displays “Connecting to Books,” which is not evidence that the original lineup and terms remain unchanged.
