A familiar voice on the phone asks for an emergency transfer. A video shows a public figure making a startling announcement. Neither should be trusted on appearance or sound alone. Deepfakes can imitate people and events, but the broader problem is that genuine media can also be edited, miscaptioned or stripped of context. The practical rule is to verify the source, seek independent corroboration and check provenance before acting.
What counts as a deepfake?
A deepfake is media generated or manipulated with AI to imitate a person, event or piece of evidence. It is not limited to a face-swapped video. The term covers voice cloning, lip-syncing, facial reenactment, fabricated video of events that never happened, synthetic profile photos, and real-time avatars used to impersonate someone on a call. It can also include manipulated intimate imagery.
Not every misleading image is a deepfake. Ordinary edits, altered speed, misleading crops, old footage presented as current, and false captions are often called “cheapfakes.” Authentic footage can be dubbed or selectively clipped. In practice, deception sits on a spectrum: fully synthetic media at one end, real media presented in a false context at the other.
Three questions should remain separate: Was the file generated or altered? Is its origin and editing history verifiable? Does it truthfully represent the event being claimed? A camera recording can be misleading, and AI-generated content can be fictional, satirical, assistive or otherwise non-deceptive.

Why deepfakes are harder to assess
Generative systems can create new media, while transformation systems alter an existing face, voice or expression. A result may combine synthetic elements with genuine footage, then be resized, compressed, denoised or re-recorded from a screen. Real-time synthesis can bring impersonation into live calls, interviews or identity checks.
As production becomes cheaper and easier to access, old visual “tells” become less dependable. A detector trained on familiar artifacts may struggle with a new generator, codec, crop or recording method. NIST’s GenAI: Deepfakes program describes creation as low-cost and widely available, and reports a 45–50% performance decline for current detection systems when moving from academic evaluation to operational deployment. That figure is NIST’s program finding, not a universal result for every detector or case (NIST GenAI: Deepfakes).
Who can be harmed, and how?
Individuals
- A cloned voice can make a family emergency or payment request sound credible.
- Impersonation can support romance scams, account takeover and identity fraud.
- Non-consensual intimate imagery can be used for harassment, coercion or reputational harm.
- Fabricated statements can damage personal, political or workplace relationships.
Businesses
- An apparent executive can request a rushed payment or bank-detail change.
- Fake video calls can target employees, customers, vendors or remote-interview processes.
- Manipulated evidence can complicate disputes, investigations and compliance work.
- Fabricated endorsements or brand impersonation can mislead customers.

Journalism, public institutions and society
Fabricated statements, crisis footage or “breaking news” can accelerate rumors and raise the cost of verification. The harm is not only that people may believe a fake. Once convincing fakes are expected, someone can dismiss genuine recordings as fabricated—the so-called “liar’s dividend.” Deepfakes can increase the speed and cost of deception and weaken confidence in evidence, but that does not mean they alone determine elections or destroy public trust.

Four questions to ask before believing or sharing media
- Who first published it? Look for the earliest credible source, not merely the account that brought it to your feed.
- What independent evidence supports the claim? Seek separate reporting, primary records, witnesses, a full livestream or other evidence that does not depend on the same clip.
- Can the file’s origin and editing history be checked? Look for provenance information, while remembering that its absence proves nothing.
- What happens if you are wrong? A viral joke and an urgent bank transfer need different levels of caution. The higher the stakes, the stronger the verification should be.
How to inspect suspicious media: triage, not proof
Visual and audio clues can justify slowing down, but no checklist can authenticate a file. The FBI describes the following as possible warning signs, not definitive evidence. Their absence does not establish that media is genuine (FBI guidance on artificial intelligence).
Visual and audio clues
- Video: Watch for mouth movements that do not match speech; facial edges that warp; hair, glasses, earrings, teeth or hands that change unnaturally; mismatched lighting or reflections; inconsistent skin texture or resolution; repeated or melted background details; awkward eye focus; abrupt frame changes.
- Audio: Listen for unnatural pauses, odd emphasis, unusually smooth or robotic phrasing, sudden changes in recording quality, background noise that does not fit the setting, or a voice that seems detached from the room.
- Familiarity: A recognizable voice is not enough. Unusual vocabulary, emotional style or a request that breaks normal practice can matter more than whether the voice sounds convincing.
Context and source checks
- Does the account have a credible history, or does it appear new, compromised or unusually urgent?
- Does the request demand money, credentials, secrecy or an exception to normal procedures?
- Is the claim reported by credible, independent sources, or does it exist only as a repost or screenshot?
- Do the date, weather, clothing, landmarks and event details fit the claim?
- For an alleged official announcement, is it also published through the institution’s verified channels?
What to do when a suspicious call, video or request arrives
Family or personal emergency request
- Do not send money immediately. Urgency is a reason to verify, not skip verification.
- End the call and contact the person using a number already saved in your contacts—not a number or link supplied during the suspicious exchange.
- Use a verification procedure agreed in advance. A private question can help, but personal details may be available to an attacker, so do not rely on it or on the voice alone.
- Contact another family member or trusted person through a separate channel.
- If you have sent money, contact your bank, payment provider or wire service immediately.
- Keep the call log, messages, usernames, payment or wallet details, email headers and original files where available; report the incident to the relevant platform and law-enforcement channel.
Executive payment or bank-detail request
- Treat an urgent payment or bank-detail change as unverified, even if the requester appears on video.
- Use a previously established communication channel to call a known contact back.
- Require the organization’s usual two-person approval and payment controls; do not grant an exception because of apparent rank or urgency.
- Preserve the message and report it through your organization’s incident-escalation route.
Journalism or research
- Request the original file rather than relying on a social-media copy, and record where and when it was obtained.
- Preserve the original, metadata and a cryptographic hash where possible so later copies can be compared.
- Search for earlier versions and reverse-search key frames; investigate whether footage has appeared in a different context.
- Seek independent witnesses, documents, livestreams or geolocation evidence.
- For a consequential claim, consult a media-forensics specialist before publication. Consider whether showing or reposting the material would amplify harm.
Non-consensual intimate imagery
Do not redistribute the material to prove it exists. Preserve relevant URLs, account details, messages and other evidence without circulating the image, report it to the platform, and seek help from appropriate local support, legal or law-enforcement services. Laws and reporting options vary by location, and situations involving minors require especially urgent handling.
Provenance, Content Credentials and watermarks
Detection asks whether a file contains patterns associated with synthetic generation or manipulation. Provenance asks where the file came from, who handled it and what changes were recorded. C2PA is an open technical standard for tamper-evident information about an asset’s origin and editing history; Content Credentials are one way that information may be presented. C2PA’s specification site listed version 2.4 as current when checked on August 18, 2026, but implementations may support different versions (C2PA specifications; How Content Credentials work).

What the different signals mean
- Metadata credentials: Information attached to a file or its manifest, which may record origin and editing steps.
- Invisible watermarks: Signals embedded in media by a particular system. Their presence may help identify supported content, but they are not universal evidence about all media.
- Visible labels: Disclosures such as “AI-generated” that inform viewers when applied and retained.
- Cryptographic signatures: Evidence that a credential was issued by a particular signer and has not changed since signing; they do not certify the truth of the depicted event.
Credentials can be lost through screenshots, exports, platform processing or deliberate removal. A genuine camera can capture a staged event; a file without credentials may simply come from a tool or platform that did not preserve them.
Ways to inspect supported credentials
Adobe’s Content Authenticity Inspect instructions describe a beta tool for viewing Content Credentials, including creator and editing information (Adobe Inspect instructions). OpenAI says its verification work can check supported images and audio for OpenAI provenance signals such as C2PA and SynthID (OpenAI on content provenance; OpenAI help on C2PA in images). These checks apply to supported signals; a missing signal cannot authenticate arbitrary media or show that another system was not used.
Can AI detectors reliably identify deepfakes?
Not universally, and not on their own. A detector can be a useful triage signal, but its score is not a probability that a claim is true or false, nor a verdict about deception. A system might classify content as AI-generated without showing that it was used deceptively; it might flag suspicious patterns without identifying which part was altered.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPerformance can vary with new generators, compression, cropping, resizing, short or low-quality samples, repeated editing, background noise, language, device and recording conditions. Detectors can produce false positives on unusual genuine media and false negatives on sophisticated fakes. Treat a result as one input alongside source tracing, corroboration, provenance and human review.

For example, Hive documents separate functions for AI-generation classification, source classification, deepfake scoring and C2PA metadata handling. Its documentation warns that metadata may be stripped or falsified and recommends interpreting the full response rather than treating one field as a verdict (Hive AI-generated content detection; Hive image and video detection).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What businesses and institutions should change
Identity and payment controls
- Verify sensitive requests using known contact information and authenticated channels, not caller ID, a supplied callback number or video appearance alone.
- Require two-person approval for payments and bank-detail changes, with documented callbacks for exceptions.
- In remote identity checks, combine channel and device controls, media analysis, manual review and random human-in-the-loop cues where appropriate. NIST’s identity-proofing guidance addresses digital injection and forged media and recommends safeguards including authenticated channels, device controls and human review (NIST remote attended identity-proofing guidance; NIST SP 800-63A).
- Do not let a detector automatically approve or reject a person without reviewing the consequences and the system’s limits.
Media and incident response
- Preserve original official audio and video, and consider signed capture or provenance tools where the organization can maintain the chain from capture through publication.
- Publish major announcements through multiple verified channels, and maintain an asset register for official media.
- Train staff to recognize urgency and authority manipulation, and provide a clear escalation path for suspicious content.
- When an incident occurs, freeze suspicious transactions, preserve evidence, notify affected parties and contact banks, platforms, counsel or law enforcement promptly as appropriate.
- Assess whether intimate imagery, minors, elections or critical infrastructure are involved, and avoid re-sharing harmful material unnecessarily.
What the law covers: a dated, regional snapshot
European Union
The European Commission says AI Act transparency obligations for certain AI-generated or manipulated content, including deepfakes, apply from August 2, 2026. The Commission’s Code of Practice is intended to help providers and deployers demonstrate compliance with labeling and marking obligations. The scope depends on the actor, system, use case and relevant provision; this is not a universal ban on synthetic media or a guarantee that every item will carry an authenticity label (European Commission: Code of Practice on AI-generated content).
United States
There is no single, comprehensive “U.S. deepfake law” that resolves every case. Relevant rules may come from state laws and existing laws on fraud, harassment, impersonation, privacy, copyright, elections or consumer protection, alongside platform policies and sector-specific requirements. The FBI has said fake speech alone is not necessarily sufficient for a federal investigation; there must be a clear nexus to a federal crime or foreign actor (FBI testimony on oversight of the Cyber Division). For an active case, check current law in the relevant state and the specific harm involved.
Which tools make sense for which job?
Most people do not need an enterprise detector to check an occasional clip. Start with source verification and provenance inspection. Organizations handling large volumes or consequential identity decisions may need specialist analysis, but selection should depend on a tested workflow, privacy, explainability and human escalation—not a vendor’s unverified accuracy claim.
| Need | Approach | Limits to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Occasional consumer check | Trace the original source, corroborate the claim and inspect credentials when available. | Credential absence is inconclusive; source tracing may fail for new or private material. |
| Newsroom or research team | Preserve originals and provenance, use specialist detection for consequential cases, and seek independent evidence. | A detector cannot replace editorial review or establish factual truth on its own. |
| Enterprise fraud prevention | Build callback, dual-approval and authenticated-channel controls; consider API-based detection as an additional signal. | API scores need testing in the organization’s conditions and should not be sole decision-makers. |
| Platform moderation | Combine multimodal analysis, benchmarks, human review and escalation procedures. | Volume does not remove risks of false positives, false negatives or context errors. |
| Evidence capture | Use authenticated capture and signed provenance from the start of the workflow. | Capture systems are not a retrospective authenticity check for arbitrary downloaded files. |
For technical teams, Hive documents APIs for analysis of image, video, audio, text and deepfake indicators, but its public documentation does not establish pricing or performance for a particular use case (Hive API documentation). Truepic focuses on authenticated capture for workflows such as identity verification and field evidence; capture-based systems work best when deployed before evidence is created (Truepic authenticity research). Neither category removes the need for source checks and human accountability.
The practical rule
Treat unexpected voice and video as persuasive evidence, not verified identity. Before sharing, paying or making a consequential decision, establish who published the media, corroborate its claim independently and verify through a trusted channel. When the stakes are high, preserve the original and involve people equipped to review it.
