YouTube’s TV music player can switch between a music video, synchronized lyrics, and an album-art screen. The control has been reported since February 2025, so it is not a brand-new 2026 launch; whether it appears for you depends on your device, app version, track, rollout, and possibly subscription.
What YouTube’s Display control does
Display is a presentation setting in YouTube’s TV music playback interface—not a separate music service or a new YouTube TV subscription. Depending on the track and device, it offers three ways to watch or listen:

The three modes were described in 9to5Google’s report on February 18, 2025; Android Central also described the on-screen lyric presentation. Lyrics in Display are track-linked music data, not the same thing as closed captions or subtitles embedded in a video.

- Open the YouTube app on your TV or streaming device and sign in.
- To browse music, open the YouTube app’s side menu, select Music, then choose a song, playlist, or personalized recommendation. Google’s TV help page documents this route and notes that signing in is needed for personalized YouTube Music content.
- Start a song or music video, then bring up the playback controls with your remote.
- Select Display or Display Mode, then choose Lyrics or Artwork.
The original interface report placed a Display button among the playback controls, between Thumbs Down and Save, and some reports showed an eye-like icon. Later TV interface changes may move it: check expanded playback controls or the music-specific options row if you do not see it immediately.

Artwork mode replaces the video with the album image and track details. The original report also found that a song started from the Music tab or a YouTube Music shortcut could offer Display choices and a quick route to its music-video version. On Android TV, however, installing or opening YouTube Music can lead to the Music tab inside the main YouTube app rather than a wholly separate player; Google describes that behavior in its help documentation.
Which TVs and devices have it?
The feature was first reported on YouTube for Android TV version 5.22 or later in February 2025, and the report said it was also appearing on other smart-TV platforms. That version is an initial observation, not a verified current minimum. Google documents Music in the YouTube TV app on supported smart TVs and streaming devices, but neither that documentation nor the rollout reports establish that every Roku, Samsung, LG, Fire TV, Apple TV, Xbox, or PlayStation device supports all three Display modes.

Availability can vary with the television or streaming platform, its YouTube app version, the selected content, account eligibility, and rollout status. The existence of a Music section on a device does not by itself guarantee that Display is available there.

Lyrics are not guaranteed for every song or video. YouTube Music’s November 2023 feature guidance said timed lyrics on smart TVs were limited to certain art-track videos. The particular version and its associated music data therefore matter: an official art track may offer lyrics when a user-uploaded video or alternate version does not.

- If Lyrics is absent, try an official art track, album audio video, or another officially uploaded version of the song.
- If Artwork and Video appear but Lyrics does not, Display can still be working normally; lyric availability is separate and content-specific.
- Licensing, metadata, language, region, or the selected content version may affect whether timed lyrics appear.
Do not assume that captions, auto-generated subtitles, or lyrics in comments can be substituted for synchronized lyrics in Display Mode.

The eligibility rule is not clearly established as universal. Recent TechRadar coverage associates Display Mode with Music or Premium subscribers, while the original February 2025 report did not establish a general paywall. Google’s public TV help page describes Music access and membership benefits but does not set out one rule for the Display control across every platform and account. If the control is missing, subscription status may be one factor, but it is not the only possible explanation.

What to try if Display is missing
These are practical troubleshooting steps, not a guaranteed Google procedure. Availability differences between devices can also reflect a staged rollout rather than a problem with your setup.

- Close YouTube fully, reopen it, and check the expanded playback controls.
- Sign in again if needed, then open the Music section and start a track there.
- Try an official music video or art track rather than a user-uploaded version.
- If possible, check the same account on another supported TV or streaming device.
- If a subscription prompt appears, check the membership options for your account before deciding whether an upgrade is worthwhile.
What to expect from the experience
Lyrics mode offers a large-screen sing-along view, while Artwork is a quieter option for background listening or gatherings. The control is not a full karaoke system: it does not establish vocal removal, scoring, or microphone support. The selected mode was observed to persist across songs during brief third-party testing, but Google has not documented that as a setting guaranteed to be saved. Nor does an artwork or lyrics screen establish that playback will continue after leaving YouTube or switching to another TV app.
