If your Letterboxd film appears in an Instagram Story but its stars do not, that does not necessarily mean your rating was deleted or Letterboxd is down. The share may be targeting the film page rather than your diary entry or review, or the rating card may not survive the handoff to Instagram. First confirm the rating is saved, then try sharing the diary entry or review. If Instagram still omits the stars, use a screenshot and Instagram’s link sticker, or consider a third-party Story-card app.
Identify what is failing
“Letterboxd won’t share my rating” can describe several different problems. Pinpointing the stage that fails helps avoid unnecessary fixes such as reinstalling both apps.

A problem affecting one phone, account, film, or app version is not enough to establish a platform-wide outage. No official source reviewed for this article confirms a Letterboxd-wide rating-sharing outage as of August 18, 2026. Treat the issue as potentially specific to the share target, app handoff, account, or device unless Letterboxd or Instagram confirms otherwise.

On Letterboxd, marking a film watched, rating it, logging it in your diary, and writing a review are related but distinct actions. A watched film does not necessarily have stars, and a rating attached to a particular diary entry or review is not the same thing as simply sharing the film’s general page.

Open the film in Letterboxd and confirm the stars are present. If you logged the film or wrote a review, open that entry and check its rating too. Letterboxd says a new rating added to a diary entry or review updates the film’s default rating, but ratings already attached to earlier diary entries or reviews remain unchanged (Letterboxd’s explanation of ratings across entries). If the film was logged without a rating, there are no stars for a share card to display.
Try sharing the diary entry or review, not just the film page
- Open Letterboxd and confirm the film rating is saved.
- Open the film’s diary entry or review, if you have one. This is the specific item to test; a film page is not interchangeable with a review or diary entry.
- Open that item’s options or Share menu and choose the Instagram option if Letterboxd offers it.
- When Instagram opens, check the Story draft before posting: look for the poster, stars, review text, and any link you intend to include.
Button names and share-sheet behavior can vary by operating system, app version, and rollout. Letterboxd’s FAQ describes sharing through its share options, but does not promise that every film share will produce an Instagram Story card containing the user’s rating. Community members have reported that sharing a diary entry or review can expose a rating that was absent from a film-page share; treat that as a troubleshooting lead, not a guaranteed feature.

Letterboxd’s mobile apps cover a subset of the web experience, and app controls can differ (Letterboxd mobile-app information). Do not assume a missing rating means it was erased: the share may simply be rendering a different object.

- Check that Instagram is installed, updated, and signed in to the account you mean to use. Update Letterboxd as well.
- Close and reopen both apps. If the share still fails, restart the phone.
- Try a different film or diary entry, and, if practical, check whether the same Letterboxd account behaves differently on another device. This helps separate a single-item issue from an account or device problem.
- Use Letterboxd’s Copy Link option as a fallback. In Instagram, start a Story, add your image or screenshot, open the sticker tray, choose the link sticker, and paste the Letterboxd URL. Instagram documents the link sticker as a way to direct Story viewers to a website. It preserves a clickable destination; it does not automatically generate a Letterboxd rating graphic.
If Letterboxd itself is showing action failures on Android, its support guidance suggests clearing the app’s local cache in Android Settings. Menu names vary by phone; look for Letterboxd under the system’s app settings and clear its cache, not its storage or data unless you are prepared to sign in again and understand what may be reset.

Build a Story manually
If your priority is showing the poster and stars, take a screenshot of the relevant Letterboxd film, diary entry, or review and add it to an Instagram Story. Crop it and add text or star graphics in Instagram if needed. If viewers should be able to open the Letterboxd item, attach its copied URL with the link sticker.
Check the screenshot before posting. Crop out notifications, private messages, account details, or anything else you did not intend to share. A screenshot gives you control over the visual, but unlike a link sticker it may not provide a tappable route to the film or review.

Consider a third-party Story-card app only if you want a designed card
Stories For Letterboxd for iOS and its Android listing describe a workflow that uses a copied Letterboxd link to create Story content for films, reviews, and profiles. It is an independent third-party app, not an official Letterboxd feature. The listings showed it as free with in-app purchases when checked on August 18, 2026; prices, availability, and paid features may vary by country and change.
Before using it, read the current privacy and data-safety disclosures in your app store and decide whether you are comfortable using another developer’s app with the content you share. Do not assume the app is safe or unsafe based on a store summary alone. Store reviewers have raised concerns about paid styles and design or usability, but those are individual opinions, not independently verified product defects.

Letterboxd’s official app listing describes Pro and Patron benefits but does not identify Instagram rating sharing as a subscription feature (Letterboxd on the US App Store). There is no verified basis to buy a subscription solely to unlock Story rating cards.
When to report it as a bug
If the same problem occurs repeatedly after checking the rating, sharing the right entry, updating the apps, and testing Copy Link, report the failure with enough detail to reproduce it. Include your phone model, iOS or Android version, Letterboxd and Instagram versions, account region, whether you shared a film page or a diary/review entry, the exact steps, and the error text. A short screen recording or screenshot of the draft can help; hide private information first.
For an Instagram-side error, Instagram’s official guidance is to update the app and report it through Profile → menu → Help → Report a Problem (Instagram’s problem-reporting instructions). For Letterboxd-side failures, use Letterboxd’s help and support channels. One failed handoff does not by itself establish an outage; note whether the copied link works and whether another entry, account, or device changes the result.
