Spanish commercials during an English-language show usually do not mean your Roku, television, or program audio has switched to Spanish. Commercials are separate video assets selected by Roku, the streaming app, a live/FAST channel, or their advertising partners. Their language can differ from the program because of targeting, contextual ad selection, inventory, or inaccurate location data.
First establish whether only the ads are Spanish. If the show itself is also in Spanish, fix the app’s audio track. If the show remains in English, troubleshoot the ad source, app, profile, and network rather than resetting the TV.
First determine what has changed
Only the commercial is Spanish
This is most likely an advertising or ad-inventory issue. The program and the ad break are delivered separately, so an English show can receive a Spanish-language creative.

The program audio is Spanish too
This points to an audio-track, profile, title-availability, or app setting. While the show is playing, press Star (*), open the app’s sound or language menu, and select the English audio track. Why the ad language can differ from the show
Depending on where you see the commercial, the ad may be supplied by:
- Roku or the Roku Audience Network;
- The Roku Channel;
- A third-party streaming app;
- A live-TV or FAST channel;
- A cable, satellite, or virtual-TV provider; or
- An advertiser’s agency and local ad-insertion system.
Roku says video ads can appear in pre-roll and mid-roll slots across The Roku Channel and participating ad-supported apps, but placement is not guaranteed for a particular channel or app (ad locations; placement limitations).
Roku’s privacy policy describes personalized and contextual advertising using signals that can include device identifiers, IP address, device language, time zone, viewing activity, and information supplied by streaming services or advertising partners. These are possible signals—not proof of why one household received one particular commercial. A Spanish ad does not prove that Roku is listening to conversations or has accurately identified anyone’s ethnicity.

A controlled troubleshooting sequence
1. Note where and when it happens
Write down the app or channel, title, date and approximate time, whether the show remains in English, and whether the ad is pre-roll or mid-roll. Note whether the same commercial repeats.
2. Try another title in the same app
If Spanish ads occur throughout one app, its ad provider is a stronger suspect. If they occur only on one channel or title, that channel’s inventory or campaign may be responsible.
3. Try another app
Spanish ads in one app but not others usually indicate app-controlled advertising. Ads across several apps make shared Roku-account, device, household, or network signals more plausible.

4. Compare profiles and devices
Try another profile, the same app on a phone or computer, or the same Roku account on another Roku. A change by profile suggests account-level personalization; a change by device or network suggests device or location signals. These tests narrow the cause but do not prove it.
5. Check the network location
Temporarily disconnect a VPN, proxy, Smart-DNS service, corporate network, or hotspot, return to the normal home broadband connection, restart Roku, and test again. IP geolocation can be wrong even when you have changed nothing. Do not buy a VPN to manipulate ads; it can create less accurate location targeting and may conflict with service rules.
Roku settings that matter—and their limits
Device language
To change Roku’s interface language, use Home → Settings → System → Language. This changes menu text; it is not a verified control for every commercial or every app’s audio track (Roku language instructions).

Personalized advertising
On supported software, advertising controls begin under Home → Settings → Privacy → Advertising. Turning off personalized advertising is a privacy choice, not an English-language filter. Roku says ads will continue and may be contextual; third-party apps can have separate policies and controls (Roku privacy policy).
Advertising identifier
Roku documents an option to reset the device’s advertising identifier. This may reduce the usefulness of an old advertising profile, but it will not guarantee that the next ad is English.

Home-screen ad preferences
Controls for hiding certain Home Screen or screensaver ads and limiting sensitive categories do not control all video commercials or ads inside partner apps. Roku explains these limits in its ad-preference help page.

What will not normally fix Spanish commercials
- Changing subtitles or closed captions;
- Volume leveling, dialogue enhancement, or other sound modes—these alter sound processing, not ad-language selection (Roku sound controls);
- Changing the Roku menu language and expecting every app to follow it;
- Turning off personalized ads and expecting advertising to disappear;
- Factory-resetting Roku before testing the app, profile, and network.
To update an app before escalating, highlight it on the Home Screen, press Star (*), and choose Check for updates, as described by Roku.
Can Roku force every commercial to be English?
There is no verified Roku-wide setting that forces all video advertisements to use English. An individual app may offer language, profile, or ad controls, but availability is app-specific. Roku documentation describing English-only creative uploads in one Ads Manager workflow applies to that advertiser tool; it does not establish what every viewer can receive across Roku inventory and partner apps.
When to contact support
One third-party app
Contact that app first. Include the app version if shown, Roku model, title and episode, date/time, whether program audio stayed English, approximate location, network type, and a recording or photo if practical.

Contact Roku support and identify the title, ad break, date, time, and device. Roku’s advertising documentation confirms that The Roku Channel carries Roku video inventory. Use Roku’s contact page.
Several apps and devices
Check VPN/proxy use, IP geolocation, Roku privacy settings, app profiles, router or ISP changes, and whether all affected devices share the same account or network.
Bottom line
If the show remains in English, Spanish commercials usually reflect ad selection—not a Roku language defect. Identify the app or channel, compare titles, profiles, devices, and networks, and adjust privacy settings only with realistic expectations. If the program itself is Spanish, select its English audio track inside the app. Do not replace the Roku or factory-reset it until those tests isolate the device as the cause.
