Some HBO Max subscribers report trouble casting from Android phones and iPhones, but the available official information does not confirm one widespread outage or announce a universal fix in progress. HBO Max still documents Chromecast and AirPlay as supported options. The right troubleshooting path depends on the symptom: a missing Cast button, a device that cannot be found, playback that fails after connection, or video with missing or misrouted sound.
Is HBO Max casting down for everyone?
There is no verified official notice in the cited HBO Max support material confirming a service-wide Android or iOS casting outage, or giving a timetable for a universal fix. HBO Max’s Chromecast instructions and its watching help pages continue to describe Chromecast and AirPlay support.
Some users have posted about Chromecast discovery failures, AirPlay or audio-routing problems, and Apple TV app integration. These reports establish that individual users have encountered problems; they do not show how many subscribers are affected or prove a common cause. A report about Apple TV app integration, for example, is not evidence that Chromecast casting from Android is fixed—or broken.

“Casting not working” can mean several different things:

- The Cast or AirPlay button is missing.
- The button appears, but the TV or streaming device is not listed.
- The device appears but will not connect.
- It connects, but the video will not start, buffers, or stops.
- Video plays but audio, subtitles, or remote controls behave incorrectly.
Identify which stage fails before changing settings. That helps distinguish a phone permission or Wi-Fi discovery problem from an app, account, playback, or TV connection problem.
Do these quick checks first
- Check device support. The U.S. HBO Max help pages reviewed list Android 7.1 or later, iOS 16.4 or later, Apple TV HD or Apple TV 4K with tvOS 16.4 or later, and second- or third-generation Chromecast, Chromecast Ultra, or a TV with Chromecast built in. First-generation Chromecast is not supported. Requirements and availability can vary by country and change; check the current HBO Max device support page for your region.
- Put the phone and Chromecast on the same Wi-Fi network. Guest, hotel, public, workplace, or isolated networks may allow internet access but block devices from discovering one another. A VPN or network-security setting can also interfere with local discovery; temporarily turn it off only if appropriate for your network and privacy needs.
- Update the app and device software. Install available HBO Max updates from the official app store and check for Android, iOS, TV, or streaming-device updates.
- Restart the app and devices. Force-close HBO Max, reopen it, and restart the phone and receiving device. For Chromecast, disconnect it from power and HDMI, wait about a minute, then reconnect it.
- Check the TV input. If using a Chromecast plugged into HDMI, select the input it is connected to. Try another HDMI port if needed.
- Test another title or app. If one title fails, the issue may be title-specific. If no Cast-enabled app can find the Chromecast, investigate the network or Chromecast rather than assuming HBO Max is the cause.
iPhone or iPad: fix a missing Cast button
On iOS, Local Network permission is essential for apps to discover devices on your home network. HBO Max also instructs users to enable Bluetooth access for its Chromecast setup.
- Open Settings on the iPhone or iPad.
- Scroll to and tap HBO Max.
- Turn on Local Network and Bluetooth, if those switches are shown.
- Close and reopen HBO Max, then wait briefly for the Cast button.
Google also identifies Local Network access as necessary for Cast discovery on iOS 14 and later in its Cast troubleshooting guidance. If the button remains missing, confirm that the receiving device is on the same Wi-Fi, restart the phone and TV or Chromecast, and check that the device is supported.

For AirPlay, check that the Apple TV or TV supports AirPlay and is available on the network. Treat AirPlay as a separate test from Chromecast: one may work while the other does not. If AirPlay connects but sound is missing or routed to the wrong output, check the iPhone’s audio output selection, TV speakers, receiver, and soundbar independently.
Then check Settings > General > Software Update and the App Store for updates. Force-close and reopen HBO Max, restart the device, and reinstall the app if the issue persists. Testing AirPlay from another supported app can help isolate the problem: if other apps work but HBO Max does not, an HBO Max-specific app or playback issue becomes more plausible, though it is not definitive proof.
Android: refresh the app and test Cast discovery
- Open the Google Play Store, search for HBO Max, and tap Update if offered. HBO Max says Android installations from outside Google Play are unsupported.
- Confirm the phone and Chromecast are on the same Wi-Fi. Open Google Home and check whether the Chromecast is visible there. If it is not, troubleshoot the network or Chromecast before focusing on HBO Max.
- Restart HBO Max and the phone. Check Android settings for app permissions or battery restrictions that may limit local connectivity or background activity; menu names vary by manufacturer and OS version.
- If HBO Max behaves abnormally, clear its cache: open Settings, find Apps or search for HBO Max, choose Storage & cache (or Storage), then tap Clear cache.
- If clearing cache does not help, Android’s Clear storage or Clear data option may reset local app state. This generally signs you out and removes local app data; it does not delete your HBO Max account. Sign in again and retest.
- As a later step, uninstall and reinstall the app from Google Play.
Google Home screen casting can be a diagnostic or temporary workaround, but it is not identical to native Cast playback and may differ in picture quality, controls, or compatibility. It does not prove that the HBO Max app’s casting path has been repaired.

Chromecast: distinguish discovery from playback
If Chromecast is missing from HBO Max, confirm the same-Wi-Fi requirement and, on iOS, Local Network permission. If Chromecast appears but connection or playback fails:

- Unplug Chromecast from power and HDMI, wait about one minute, reconnect it, and try another HDMI port if necessary.
- Test another Cast-enabled app. If it also fails to find or play on Chromecast, the fault is more likely in the device, Wi-Fi, router, or TV setup.
- If other apps cast successfully but HBO Max does not, update and restart HBO Max, then test another title.
A Chromecast can be powered and visible while its HDMI connection is still on the wrong input. A receiver, splitter, adapter, or cable can also cause an HDMI or HDCP handshake problem after connection. For 4K playback, HBO Max’s 4K guidance specifies compatible HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 support across the relevant display and equipment chain.
If the device connects but HBO Max will not play
At this stage, check the app, title, account, network, and output chain rather than repeating discovery fixes. HBO Max’s general troubleshooting guidance recommends updating the app and device software, testing the connection, signing out, powering the device off, waiting 10 seconds, restarting, and signing in again. Its support material lists 5 Mbps as the minimum download speed for streaming; 4K requires a more capable connection and compatible equipment.

On Android, clearing cache and, if needed, app storage may refresh corrupted local state. On iPhone and iPad, check permissions, update and restart the app and device, and reinstall if needed. These steps cannot repair a server-side defect, an account entitlement issue, an unsupported device, a router that blocks local discovery, or faulty HDMI equipment. If only one title fails, try a different title before treating the problem as a general casting failure.
VPNs or location-detection interference, weak Wi-Fi, and HDMI/HDCP issues are possible diagnostic leads, not confirmed causes of every HBO Max casting report. Note any displayed error code before trying further steps or contacting support.
AirPlay is not Chromecast
Chromecast uses Google Cast discovery; AirPlay is Apple’s separate route to compatible Apple TV and AirPlay-enabled TVs. Their permissions, discovery, connection, and audio paths differ, so a Chromecast fix may do nothing for AirPlay. Check AirPlay discovery, video playback, and sound as distinct checkpoints.

Some Apple-device users have reported AirPlay audio-output issues and Apple TV app integration problems. Those are different symptoms from a missing Chromecast button, and anecdotal posts do not establish a universal HBO Max defect. If video plays but sound does not, test the TV’s own speakers, selected AirPlay audio destination, receiver, and soundbar; avoid assuming the phone’s network discovery is still the problem.
Workarounds if mobile casting still fails
- Use HBO Max on the TV or streaming device itself. Where supported, a native app avoids phone-to-TV discovery and handoff. HBO Max lists platforms including Apple TV, Android TV, Chromecast with Google TV, Roku, Fire TV, Samsung and LG TVs, and game consoles; check the current device list for regional and model eligibility.
- Cast from a computer using Chrome. HBO Max’s Chromecast instructions include this route. It changes the sending device and may help isolate a phone-specific issue.
- Use HDMI. An appropriate cable or phone adapter bypasses wireless discovery, but requires a compatible adapter, HDMI input, and equipment that supports the content’s output requirements.
- Try Google Home screen casting on Android. This is a possible alternative, not a guaranteed repair, and screen mirroring may have different controls or quality from native casting.
These are ways to watch, not proof that the underlying mobile app problem is fixed. If the TV’s native HBO Max app already works, buying a replacement streaming device is not a first-line troubleshooting step. If you consider another provider or subscription route, verify that your account and plan actually include access; one subscription does not automatically grant access through every bundle.
Is a permanent fix coming?
No official timetable for a universal casting fix appears in the cited support material. An app update may resolve a particular symptom on a particular device without fixing all Chromecast, AirPlay, audio, or Apple TV integration problems. Look for an official HBO Max support acknowledgment, release notes, or an app update that addresses the exact symptom and device combination before treating a report as a confirmed fix.

Contact support if the device is supported, you have updated and restarted the relevant equipment, and the failure continues. Include:
- Phone model, Android or iOS version, and HBO Max app version.
- Chromecast, Apple TV, or TV model and its software version.
- Whether the device appears in Google Home or AirPlay, and whether another app can cast to it.
- Whether the HBO Max native TV app works and whether the problem affects every title or just one.
- The exact error message or code, plus the step where failure occurs.
HBO Max specifically advises noting on-screen error messages or codes when seeking help. This information helps support distinguish a local discovery problem from an account, playback, or device issue.
