Status checked August 16, 2026: Independent outage trackers were not detecting a continuing widespread Letterboxd outage at their latest crawls. That does not rule out a brief, regional, app-only, or account-specific problem. Users reported login and loading failures on August 9, but those reports were not an official incident confirmation.
If Letterboxd is failing for you, first compare the website and app, then try another device or network. That can help separate a service problem from a browser, connection, or login issue.
Is Letterboxd down right now?
The latest available tracker signals do not indicate a continuing widespread outage, but status can change quickly. Downdetector’s Letterboxd page showed no current problems at its latest crawl, while Down for Everyone or Just Me was not detecting problems and listed July 28, 2026 as its latest detected major outage. These are third-party signals, not an official guarantee that the service is working for every user or region.

- Open letterboxd.com and try both the homepage and an individual film page.
- Open the Letterboxd app separately. Letterboxd offers apps for iOS, Android, and Apple TV, but the apps provide a subset of the website’s features; a feature missing in an app is not necessarily an outage. See Letterboxd’s apps page and its mobile apps and API information.
- Check Downdetector and Down for Everyone or Just Me. A growing cluster of reports from different locations is more persuasive than isolated comments.
- Try a second device or a private browser window, then switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
One person’s failure does not establish a global outage, and a tracker showing no problems cannot rule out a short-lived or localized issue. No clearly surfaced official public Letterboxd status page is established here, so check Letterboxd’s official contact channels as well as independent trackers.
What users reported during the August 9 outage
On August 9, 2026, Letterboxd users reported being logged out, unable to sign back in, and encountering loading failures. Some said they saw a 500 error, and reports described problems on both the website and app. These are crowdsourced reports, not an official Letterboxd incident report; they do not establish the cause, duration, geographic reach, or effect on user data. A 500-series response is generally consistent with a server-side failure, but an error code alone cannot identify the cause.

How to tell whether the problem is local, regional, or service-wide
Compare results across connections and devices. If Letterboxd works on cellular data but not Wi-Fi, the difference points toward a local network, DNS, router, ISP, firewall, or filtering issue. If it fails the same way on several devices and networks, a Letterboxd-side or broader routing problem becomes more plausible. If other sites also fail, check your internet connection or DNS before troubleshooting Letterboxd.

- 500-series error: More consistent with a server-side failure than a mistyped password.
- Login loop: Could reflect an outage, expired session, blocked cookies, or app authentication problem.
- DNS error or timeout: Could involve your network, ISP, DNS, VPN, or regional routing.
- App opens but actions fail: Could reflect stale app data, an app-version issue, or a partial service problem.
A VPN may change the route your connection takes, but it is not a universal fix and can introduce slower connections or authentication problems. One report described access working through a VPN in Tunisia; that is anecdotal, not evidence that Letterboxd is deliberately blocking users there or that a VPN will solve the problem elsewhere. If the Letterboxd website will not load
- Try the site in a private or incognito window, which reduces the effect of extensions and existing session data.
- If that works, disable extensions that alter cookies, scripts, headers, or network requests, then clear Letterboxd’s site data and reopen the browser.
- Try a different browser and switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- If the site returns a 500-series error or fails on multiple devices and connections, pause local troubleshooting and check outage reports again.
A page loading from cache does not prove the service is fully available: actions such as liking, logging, or publishing can fail even when a page appears.

If the Letterboxd app is not working
- Force-close the app and reopen it. Check whether the website works in a browser so you can distinguish an app problem from a broader service failure.
- Install any available Letterboxd app update from the relevant app store, then restart the device.
- On Android: Clear the Letterboxd app cache in your device’s app settings. Letterboxd recommends emptying the local Android cache for failure messages; if needed, it also suggests signing out and back in or reinstalling. The exact settings path varies by Android device. Its FAQ troubleshooting guidance also says the device’s time and time zone need to be correct for its API authentication layer.
- On iOS: If the problem persists, reinstalling is a later option, not a guaranteed fix. Make sure you know your sign-in details first because reinstalling removes local app data.
- Temporarily disable a VPN, ad-blocking DNS, firewall, or content-filtering profile to test whether it is interfering. Restore protections that you need after the test.
If you cannot log in
Forgotten password or username
Use Letterboxd’s sign-in help and password-reset route. If the email address is in Letterboxd’s member system, its reset message includes instructions and the username if you forgot it. Check spam or junk folders. If no message arrives for an address you know, the account may use a different email.
Credentials seem right, but sign-in loops or fails
Check outage reports before repeatedly resetting your password. Then try a private browser window, enable cookies and JavaScript for Letterboxd, temporarily disable extensions that modify site data or requests, and clear Letterboxd’s site data. Try another browser or network. For app authentication failures, verify the device’s date, time, and time zone.

You were logged out unexpectedly
An unexpected logout alone does not show that your account was compromised; a service-side authentication incident or invalidated session can also cause it. If you find unfamiliar profile changes, reviews, lists, emails, or account details, change your password and contact support. Letterboxd’s FAQ warns that reused credentials exposed in unrelated data leaks are a common route to account takeover, so use a unique password.
If you can browse but cannot post or log a film
A partial outage or publishing problem can affect actions while pages remain viewable. Save a long review locally before submitting it, try the website if the app is failing, and avoid tapping “post,” “log,” or “save” repeatedly while the service is timing out. Repeated attempts can create duplicate submissions or leave you unsure which version went through. If a film log appears missing after service recovers, refresh the page and check your diary directly before trying to submit it again.
Will an outage delete ratings, reviews, diary entries, or watchlists?
A temporary outage normally affects access or publishing, but there is no formal Letterboxd outage data-retention guarantee established here. Do not assume an unpublished review or diary entry will be recovered. If you believe saved account data is missing after service returns, collect the film title, approximate time, device, and screenshots, then contact support rather than repeatedly recreating the entry.
When to contact Letterboxd support
If the service appears operational but the issue persists, submit a request through Letterboxd support. Include details that help distinguish an account problem from an app, device, or network issue:
