Netflix ended support for its app on PlayStation 3 on March 2, 2026. The cutoff affects viewing through a PS3—not Netflix memberships or accounts generally—and the reported “thousands” figure has not been verified. If you still have Netflix, you can keep watching on another compatible device.
What changed—and what did not
Netflix’s PS3 app stopped working on March 2, 2026. A report of the on-screen notice quoted Netflix as saying the service would no longer be available on that device after that date. Netflix’s current PlayStation support page lists PS4, PS4 Pro, PS5 and PS5 Pro, but not PS3.

This is a device-support cutoff, not an automatic subscription cancellation. Losing the app on one console does not by itself cancel a Netflix membership or remove the account. Membership changes, including cancellation, are separate actions described in Netflix’s membership information.
The PS3 itself is not thereby disabled: it may still be used for games, Blu-ray playback and other services, subject to each service’s own support. Netflix’s historical newsroom material confirms that the console was once a Netflix platform; its absence from the current support list reflects a change in Netflix compatibility.

Who is affected?
- Affected: Anyone who relied on the Netflix app on a PlayStation 3, including households using the console as their only streaming device connected to the TV.
- Not automatically affected: Netflix members who watch on another supported device. Netflix lists smart TVs, streaming players, game consoles, mobile devices and computers among its device categories, but exact support depends on model and region. See its supported-device directory.
There is no verified Netflix figure establishing how many households were affected. “Thousands” should not be treated as a confirmed count: the reported cutoff identifies the hardware and date, not a user total.
Why did Netflix retire the PS3 app?
The reported Netflix notice attributed the cutoff to technical limitations. The PS3 launched in 2006, making it roughly 19 years old when support ended in 2026, according to the report on the notice.

Legacy operating systems, app frameworks, security and content-protection requirements, and the effort involved in testing older hardware are plausible factors in why streaming services retire old platforms. They are context, not a fuller explanation Netflix has publicly confirmed for this specific decision.

How to keep watching without replacing more than necessary
Check devices you already own
Start with the TV’s built-in app store, a streaming player already connected to the TV, a newer console, or a phone, tablet or computer. Netflix’s device support varies by model and region, so check the exact model rather than relying only on a brand name. If the TV is supported, its built-in app may be all you need.

Sign in on another compatible device
- Open Netflix on the compatible device and choose Sign in.
- Enter the email address or phone number associated with the Netflix account.
- If the screen offers a QR code, scan it with a phone and follow the sign-in prompt. Netflix’s sign-in instructions cover this option.
If there is no compatible device in the home, a streaming player or stick connected to an available HDMI port can add streaming without replacing a working television. Netflix lists Roku, Google TV and Amazon Fire TV/Stick devices among supported platforms, but support differs across models and software versions. Check the relevant Roku, Google TV and device-directory information before buying. Some older devices may be limited to the country where they were purchased.
Choose a replacement based on how you will use it

Netflix’s casting guidance explains that casting availability depends on the device and plan. Buying a new PlayStation solely for Netflix is usually unnecessary if a supported TV app or streaming player will do.

Check these details before spending money
- TV and connection: Confirm the television has an available HDMI input if you plan to use an external player, and check that the device supports the TV’s resolution.
- Model and region: Search Netflix’s support information for the exact device model. Availability and functionality can vary by model, software and country of purchase.
- Plan and picture quality: A device that runs Netflix does not automatically provide 4K or HDR. Quality depends on the plan, title, TV, device, connection and HDMI/HDCP compatibility.
- Internet connection: For Ultra HD playback, Netflix specifies a steady connection of at least 15 Mbps for Roku and at least 25 Mbps for PlayStation, alongside the required compatible TV, HDMI/HDCP setup and Ultra HD-capable plan. These are stated requirements, not guarantees of uninterrupted playback. Details are in Netflix’s Roku and PlayStation support pages.
- Ad-supported plan: General Netflix compatibility does not guarantee compatibility with the ad-supported experience. In the Netflix app, open the profile or menu area, choose Get Help, then Plan Compatibility. Netflix says that if this option is absent, the device cannot be used with the ad-supported experience. If Netflix does not work on the replacement device
The app is missing
A missing app does not necessarily mean the Netflix account is at fault. Check whether Netflix supports the exact model, whether its firmware is current, whether the app can be reinstalled, and whether regional availability differs. Netflix notes that some older TVs and streaming devices may not support current functions or direct sign-up in its sign-up and membership information.

Test the account in a browser and, if available, on a second compatible TV-connected device. If it works elsewhere, focus on the TV or player: update its software and Netflix app, check its network connection, and inspect the HDMI connection when using an external player. A device-specific or connection problem is different from a membership cancellation.

You want to keep watching through the PS3
There is no reliable, supported way to restore Netflix on a PS3 after the cutoff. Use another compatible device; avoid unofficial firmware or attempts to bypass the app’s security and content-protection requirements.
What the “thousands lose access” framing gets wrong
The established event is narrow: Netflix ended support for one console’s app on a specific date. The reported notice and current PlayStation support list support that conclusion, but neither establishes a verified number of affected households. Nor does “lose access” mean that Netflix accounts were shut down: it means the PS3 is no longer a supported way to stream Netflix.
